My dog doesn't run up to random people. If some stranger approached while we're in an isolated place she's going to stay by me. She doesn't really care about people. She's a dog's dog.

So no, what you're describing has nothing to do with my situation.

You still don't get it, eh? When your dog goes chasing after a deer or whatever, a person doesn't know your dog "doesn't run up to random people;" they just see a dog running in their direction and doesn't know its intentions. Same holds true for when a person sees your dog next to you off leash.

You're right. Maybe someone was attacked by a dog when they were a kid and now they are terrified of dogs.

What they should do is get therapy.

No, azzhole. I get approached and/or attacked by dogs all the time on my runs. It's annoying. I also have to stop and tell dumb irresponsible owners that their dogs are loose.

I used to run about 60 miles/week when I was younger which included rural areas where dogs would sometimes chase me. You have to not be a little bitch and learn how to deal with them. Generally you just run backwards and face them and they will give up and go back home.

A 60-mile week is when I'm either injured or taking an easy week. I'm an ultrarunner so most of my training is on trails, and I encounter worse than dogs but that's fine because I'm a visitor/intruder in their home - it's expected. Dogs, and mostly their owners, are annoying. Look up the word annoying if you need assistance in knowing what I mean.

Last week two Dobermans came out of a backyard gate and chased me and then went the other way and so I rang the dude's doorbell and he answers, "Yeah, what the hell do you want?" thinking I'm a solicitor, and I'm like "Do you have two bigass black dogs? Well they just turned that corner about 100 yards away" and he said, "Shiit, thanks" and hopped in his truck to retrieve the dogs.

If I hadn't done that, in the next day or two there would be printouts posted on streetlights about missing Zeus and Apollo dogs and how much they're loved. Anyway, thanks for making it clear that the Karen in your story had you dead to rights.

Incredible that he said "thanks," 90% of the time these guys will just cuss you out when you point out that their dogs are running lose through the neighborhood.

The dog owner would be really dumb if they laughed at you.

Owners are sued all the time for dog attacks. It also can get real bad for the owner when the person is either elderly or very young in a stroller.

There's more to it than some people being tough around dogs.

if you're in a rural environment and your dog isn't attacking people/etc it's fine

chasing a deer is the biggest nothing burger in the history of burgers made of nothing

It's not about the deer but about my wanton disregard for the law.

If your dog hasn’t been well trained to immediately recall on demand regardless of circumstance, your dog shouldn’t be off leash. I’m surprised this is controversial at all.

I have her on GPS if she really wants to run off but she doesn't want to do that.

And I do work on recall training with her but there is zero chance that I'm getting her to come back if a deer is present. Cows she's kinda familiar with now and maybe maybe I could recall her if she saw some cows (probably not)....but no chance with a deer.

And it doesn’t cost thousands of dollars to train a dog; it only requires experience and patience.

I’m very particular to pit bulls and pit mixes. I love the breed. None of my animals are allowed off leash until they have mastered recall in a variety of circumstances. My most recent dog traveled with me to over 30 national parks and wildnerness areas. I trained her with both verbal cues and hand signals bc she was meant to solo travel with me. I would not have taken her without being able to trust her recall training. It’s for her safety and the safety of others.

My dog will stop when I tell her to. Immediately.

The only dog that should be off leash is an entirely trained and obedient dog.

Here she is barely even caring about a cow.

Not unrelated, but I can also leave food anywhere and she will never touch it. I could put a steak on the floor and she wouldn’t touch it without my permission.
