My Take:
I like dogs, but....
KEEP YOUR DOGS ON A LEASH, PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was 7 years ago when Rocko was still with us.

Seems pretty easy to me (a dog owner)
If you local community has a leash law, then use a leash.
Also understand that ALL USA National Parks have leash laws that are more strict,,, with the maximum length of leash at 6'.
If there is no local leash law,,,, please respect others and AT Least have 100% verbal commands that your dog obeys.
I fight with my partner on this all the time. I hate allowing our dogs off leash outside of designated areas. Most people that do it severely overestimate how well behaved their dog is. And you with a big dog that can potentially maul a little kid or animal have an even greater responsibility to keep your dog on a leash.
Maybe, but don't you live in Manhattan? Though it's been decades since I lived in NYC, I don't recall people walking their pets on the streets without a leash. Is that still the case? If you're bumrushed by a large dog >50% of the time you go out to grab a coffee or a cab, I think you'd change your mind about it being nitty. To me, calling this nitty would be like calling it ni
I haven't always lived in NYC.
Of course people keep their dogs on leashes in a crowded city. And in the suburbs. In truly rural areas, much less so. I'm pretty much with King Spew. Just obey the local ordinances. But I'm not going the pretend that every dog is the moral equivalent of a rabid honey badger.

Sure but his dog especially is bad to keep off leash
The dog owner would be really dumb if they laughed at you.
Owners are sued all the time for dog attacks. It also can get real bad for the owner when the person is either elderly or very young in a stroller.
There's more to it than some people being tough around dogs.
Far worse than that, it can get bad for the dog which might get put down
Luckbox didn't handle the situation with that woman well at all, and LOL at asking her to restart so he could film her as if she was some sort of raging racist.
But there is a also a fair bit of dog nittery going on in this thread as well.
so much this
i used to walk my dogs leashless on the streets of downtown beijing - it was fine
i loved taking to vets in china - they took a very hands off approach of "it's an animal it'll sort itself out" - and mind you i was not taking them in for casual things but stuff i thought was pretty serious but outside of shots or spade/neutering they were very much of the "don't a bish, it's just a pet it'll be fine"
i had a rooftop apartment and let the cats out onto the roof and they'd climb up and jump the gaps between buildings like you see in rooftop movie chases and it was pretty cool because so long as I was on my block, i'd often here meows when i was out and look and see my cat up there saying hi despite that it wasn't even our building (all buildings in this area were 6 stories so cat's either have really good vision or incredible smell to be able to tell when I was one of the people in the crowd)
so one day one of my cats hops up onto my lap and i start petting her and then i notice that she has a big gash on her underside going from her from armpit halfway down her stomach - luckily the last layer of skin wasn't torn but there's a big flap of skin - super alarming stuff so i immediately take her to the vet - to which the vet says "hey dummy she's fine look she's just chillin, don't waste my time" and I insisted they fix it and they were like "there's nothing to fix" and sent me home and sure enough she was fine
years later i get back to the usa and am astounded by how people treat their pets
"oh no did the dog eat some of the casserole that fell on the ground - there was some onion in there call the vet"
"oh dear she was chewing on a stick she found in the yard, it's possible she swallowed some wood, we need to take her to the vet now for x-rays"
"we take our cat on weekend trips with us because we're worried about her anxiety if she's left alone for 2 days and to make her more comfortable on the car rides we got her a prescription for cat xanax"
yes folks, cat xanax is a thing
right now as we speak i'm dog sitting for some friends and they literally have a rule that i can't ever be away from the house for more than 4 hours at a time because it's too emotionally taxing on the dog to be left alone
we've lost our minds, it was not like this in the 80s, something about our generation turned us all into soft hypochondriacs - i often wonder if i am immune to all this because i was abroad and not given a full dose of the crazy pills or it's just my natural misanthropic personality
also offered to help train some puppies last few years for some friends and family - they all say no because they think my methods (which entail zero physical violence and i've never used a shock collar but do entail some scare tactics and heavy negging but are super effective my dogs were always great) are too harsh and a bunch even think it's "demeaning to train a dog to play dead"
one of the best party tricks i had was i trained my dog to roll over and play dead whenever i made finger guns and said bang and everyone i know his horrified at the thought of training their dog to pretend to be a victim of gun violence
we've lost our goddamn minds
and everyone i know who was doing the new trend of positive reinforcement for dogs - ie no scolding when they take a dump on your bed all universally ended up later on requiring very expensive training sessions and/or shock collars because it never worked
i'm sure a professional trainer with years of experience and several hours a day to commit to training can make those tactics work - i'm sure a small handful of people who have the time, energy, and skill to do it properly can pull it off - but the overwhelming amount of dog owners have little experience and no time to train and should instead be doing the quick and effective stuff that's literally been used for millenia
gd where are the pet pictures

I thought we all were laboring under the idea that we're talking about douchebags that walk their dogs without a leash in areas where a leash law is in effect. In areas where dogs are allowed to be off leash, then that's a different scenario.
Every dog is not dangerous, no. But the ones who aren't dangerous are still annoying. If I'm running at 12mph and a dog starts chasing me, then I have to stop to allow the owner to catch up and retrieve the dog and listen to their bullshit.
sadly all my photos prior to 2016 are lost forever but here's some of the more recent ones
this cat was crazy, played fetch (i didn't train it, i just threw one of his toys once to get him to let me work and he immediately brought it back and dropped it in my hand - every time would drop on my hand)
he was definitely the weirdest cat i've ever known, had no fear of water and would get really upset if i didn't let him in the shower with me as he'd just hang out and rub against my legs getting completely soaked about 1/3 of the time i showered he'd be pawing at the door to be let in and once i was done with soap and shampoo would let him in to join me
kitten
full grown
his mom who we didn't adopt because she still had other kittens to care for
my white lab - off leash in downtown beijing as i get breakfast - this was before i trained him not to do this but in the moment was too cute so allowed it long enough for the photo
a dog in my neighborhood that was always on the roof that i got a kick out of
touche
This is the best thread on 2+2 right now. (I only look at like 3 ever, though so take that fwiw - I just go to whatever's updated in my subsciptions page)
That’s not the purpose of recall. And it doesn’t cost thousands of dollars to train a dog; it only requires experience and patience.I’m very particular to pit bulls and pit mixes. I love the breed. None of my animals are allowed off leash until they have mastered recall in a variety of circumstances. My most recent dog traveled with me to over 30 national parks and wildnerness a
Personally I would be really upset and angry if I ran into a pit bull off leash.
I would prefer to be confronted with a completely untrained husky than a very well trained pitbull.
I have seen so many stories about supposedly well trained pit bulls attacking even members of their family.
That’s completely understandable, which is why I always felt very safe with her alone as a woman in wilderness areas. But you would never get close to her unless you invade my personal space, which again is what she was for.
