The best of the best can go on a year long losing streak man. If you dont step down in stakes or have a very large roll you're bound to go bust at some point.
It happens so often because poker and gambling in general attracts these kinds of people more so than other areas of life. It's just proximity IMO - these people are everywhere but gnats tend to congregate around the most sugary foods

Not sure about the vlogs, but there is a clip in the Matusow documentary where Mike pays off his remaining debt with DNegs ($70k). Mike says he owed $700k total at one point, with $150k owed to DNegs. Probably the most memorable scene in the doc. Starts at 1:51:11.

I agree it was wrong bc they should have honored the status people had for the next year. But like I said the casual DNegs fan boys don't care about that or don't know about it. Kinda silly to think they should especially when if any of them were playing back then they were getting totally screwed raw by the initial system.
A lot of these Vegas poker rooms have promos that disproportionately benefit local nit regs. Yes they should honor any promo they have. But do you really think a casual player is going to care if they pull the plug on something so all the promo grinders leave and games get more fun?
Btw the stars grinders back then didn't care at all about right and wrong at all. They cared about their bottom line. It wasn't a moral issue.
