Commerce 20 - Bad Turn

Great game. 2 players limp and the VIP (who is playing 95/50 or so and talking nonstop) raises. BTN cold calls, SB calls, and I call with 87o in the BB.

Flop 773dd. SB checks, I check, limpers check, PFR bets, BTN raises, I 3bet, one of the limpers calls 3 cold, PFR calls 2 more cold, BTN calls.

Turn 6d. I check and hate it.

Are you saying that you hate the turn card, or you hate that you checked?

I don't think betting would be crazy, but I would likely check as well. This is definitely a terrible card for you, but you certainly can't fold, so why would you want to put in more bets than necessary?

I agree with checking. It seems like a pretty big parlay for you to be ahead on this turn given the action after your 3b.

What is your calling range here pre? I realize getting 11 to 1 is tempting, but I hate playing weak hands OOP.

Then again, you guys can navigate tricky spots like this better than me. I also probably am still too tight out of the blinds.

anything suited or connected is the standard (only) play. anything else hemorrhages money.

Can I flop a straight?

You should defend 87o in the BB against a player with a 95 VPIP whether it will be heads up or 9 to the flop

The spot wouldn’t be easier if you had 87s. Due to the game dynamics there’s no way folding 87o is correct so long as you play decent postflop. You just have to be able to beat -.5 BB loss, and it’s definitely doable.

Sorry for the derail smitty. I guess I should have said I would call with T9o but fold 87o, and I did miss the 95 VPIP part.

Are you defending any 2 connected here? 32o? 32s? Gappers? 74o? I think my current weakest positions are the blinds so looking to improve.

85, 74 yes

It sounds like you would benefit from just adding a few more borderline hands into your range, because it sounds like in these situations you are not defending wide enough.

I think in Winning in Tough Hold 'Em Games, they made the observation that when you're getting like 11:1 on a call, you're getting odds to draw to two pair or better. I'm not going to independently verify the math, but it sounds fairly accurate. You could therefore just check/fold anything worse than two pair on the flop and you'd still do ok. Obviously, you're not going to do that, and if you're going to really punt it off post, then maybe the reverse implied odds will get you. But this is limit hold 'em, it seems pretty hard to play so badly post that many hands become unplayable at 11:1.

I believe that hand involved two experts playing at Bellagio during the series, while this hand involved absolutely zero experts.

Alright, tell us what you hate and move on to the next street!

I hated the turn card and checking after 3betting. Anyway, the turn checked through, river was a non diamond ten, I bet and lost to the limper who called 3 cold with 45o no diamond. Poker is officially dead.

Did he happen to mention that he didn't bet the turn because he was afraid of the flush?

I’m candidly not sure if he spoke English.

Sounds like a great game.
