I am from Cincinnati. It's a great jazz town as Cal Collins tells us in this beer commercial.

But I didn't bring you here for a beer commercial. I was privileged to know Cal and his wife Susie during his last years. In this video, you can see on his face how much Benny Goodman loved Cal.

The piano player here is Steve Schmidt. Great player, he never liked me because I was always hanging out in the band room smoking weed and cuz don't smoke weed. The drummer is John von Ohlen. He was Rosemary Clooney's boyfriend and one of my favorite drummers of all time. Reminds me of Gene Krupa.

Kenny Poole played every week at a restaurant I worked at in the 90s for I think it was $35 and a meal. He would sit in the non-smoking section playing and chainsmoking. Not one customer ever said anything about it either. I always tried to make sure Kenny was well fed but in this clip he's painfully thin because dying of cancer.

If you don't know Abbey Lincoln, you should. She was a great singer, actor, composer, and activist. Check out the personnel on her album Straight Ahead. Here's Abbey doing a classic. She was married to Max Roach.

I'm a big Oscar Peterson fan and I never knew this existed.

I know no one gives a **** but one thing I find interesting is that Singers Unlimited is using the perfect harmonic series (just intonation) while Peterson is locked into the equal temperament of the piano tuning.

Peterson knows exactly what he is doing and lightly plays the blues under their harmonies and doesn't go nuts until he's solo.

It sounds like they are floating on opium clouds. ****ing beautiful.

Also this guy just popped up in my recs and it caused me to remember I saw Mose once in a little jazz club. Coolest cat ever.

It's kind of fun remembering a drunken druggy life, kinda like having a form of amnesia. One time I found out I saw Public Enemy on the Welcome to the Terrordome tour! Then I started to remember it.

I've probably been browsing, reading and lurking in this thread for 10 years now, which is pretty crazy.

I'm a big fan of Jaco and think he was a fantastic composer.

Here is a fairly obscure vid of the Portinho Trio doing a cover of Jaco's Liberty City (Klaus Mueller on keys) .
