Call vs shove when we have <50% equity

Call vs shove when we have <50% equity

Let's say there's 100bb in the pot. Villain pots turn, and we have 101bb behind.

Under what conditions do we just call 100bb versus shove the full 101bb?

It seems to me that if we have some SDV, and thus can never fold rivers, we should always shove. This ensures that we always get an extra 1bb when we happen to win.

However, if we have no SDV, and can possibly fold some rivers, it makes sense to just call?

Is there anything else I should take into account?

The probability of disconnecting and timing out with the rivered nuts.

But if your connection is rock solid and your opponent is playing from some crappy wifi, there's added benefit to calling and shoving river in hope that he will time out.

Barring meta considerations like stalling on the bubble of an MTT, it doesn't really matter.

However, if you plan to never fold river, shoving is strictly better than calling. The reason is that villain can selectively bet the final 1bb on the river only when they have a value hand, and check behind otherwise, effectively freerolling your last chip. Shoving now denies villain that advantage.
