My uncle is visiting this week, so we busted gma out of the home for a few days, she'll turn 105 in 2 months. Today we watched a bunch of old 8mm videos, via the projector, from every decade 40's through 70's. It was fun. C'mon up in October Phat, we'll do it again for her birthday, lol.

My cousin put old home movies on a disc. Unfortunately, I lost it. There's something eerie about seeing yourself as a four year old.

When I read your post, at first I thought gma was either grandma or some designer drug.

She is a trip, but yeah, grandma. I embarrassed the **** out of her by reading some of grandad's love letters to her from before they were married, mostly from 1941 when he'd been shipped off to California for flying school. I found the letter he'd written to her Mom asking for permission to marry, which may or may not have caused my eyes to water a little during the reading.

designer drug. i'm going to recommend the four-hit barrel.

Mini trip report: Alaskan cruise
Had a great time, saw a lot of great sites, ate a lot of good food and drink and got plenty of excersize. It was my first "pleasure" cruise and the first time on a ship since my last reserve cruise in the late 80's.

The ship was great. Lots of good food, drink and entertainment. There were a few decent comedians, stage shows nightly and always some sort of live music in all of the lounges. Due to weather only really had one good pool day. The weather ranged from great to horrible.

First stop was Ketchikan. Weather was great there. Famous for totem poles and salmon spawning. Saw both. Reminded me of the famous W. C. Fields quote: "Water? Never touch the stuff! Fish **** in it you know."

Next stop Juneau. As I posted earlier went out to Mendenhall glacier. Only a $4 round trip on the Juneau city bus. In addition to the glacier there was a powerful waterfall out there too. Weather was crappy and it started to drizzle as soon as we got out there.

Third stop was Skagway. Beautiful area and did a lot of hiking on nearby trails. Weather was very nice there.

Next up was a cruise through Glacier Bay. Weather iffy but not horrible. Marjorie Glacier is the star there.

Next stop College Fjord. It was sort of a bust. Weather was incredibly bad and it was totally socked in by rain and fog. The guide claimed it was the worst weather thay had ever seen there. It was real cold too! But we got close enough to Harvard Glacier to at least see it,

Next was Denali. The first 2 days there we were at several spots with views of the mountain if it was clear but it wasn't clear so it was invisible. Finally on the last day the clouds opened for about 2 hours giving us a real good look at it. Then it disappeared again. It was easily the highlight of the trip. Here is Mt Foraker, Mt Hunter and of course Denali. Foraker at 17K+ and Hunter at 14K+ are both taller than any mountain in the lower 48 and Denali stands at at over 20K. The Alaskan range is really beautiful (if you can see it!).

Got home Wednesday morning and still getting adjusted. This was my second Alaskan trip and if you have never been I highly recommend!

Wow, great pictures. Thank you for the TR!

you can always spot a glacial lake by the rock flour

shockingly similar to the mariners colors

Why are the dildos green?

here's a pic of Mendenhall from 50 years agoi'm happy you got to see it while it's still around

Yeah! When I was there back in 1980 I didn't get to the base like this time but I did take a seaplane tour over it which was amazing. Mendenhall lake apparently showed up in 1930. But according to every tour guide this trip all of the glaciers have been receding ever since the end of the mini ice age back in the 1700's. There are still plenty of glaciers though. Several still around in Glacier Bay and College Fjord and according to the guides there are 17 glaciers on Denali alone.

Marjorie Glacier definitely seemed a little wider and taller when I was there in 1980's but not that much recession. Supposedly both Marjorie and Harvard go 100 feet underwater.

The glacial waters were very silty due to the silt? Very cloudy because the glaciers drag so much earth with them. Lots of "dirt" on the glaciers themselves from dragging across the earth.

I have just discovered the Secretariat of broken sprinklers. Maybe 10-15K gallons so far this year watering the concrete?

Earlier tonight I also met the Hispanic Paul McCartney.

When I was in Kenai Fjords, they had signs with various years on them, showing how much the glacier had receded. It was pretty stunning.

Also, I fished out a piece of glacial ice downstream. It was amazingly clear. I guess all the air pockets get crushed out of the ice. It was like a piece of crystal.

You know "it's a big old goofy world."

almost as if by definition facial glacial melt started immediately after the last ice age ends

and by some ad nauseam internet estimates eighty generations will link you back to the year 1 ad and blue eyed jeans

multiply that by a little bit more than six and a quarter then find your imagination rewound not even close to dinosaur days but well within the realm of hour most recently recorded frozen human years

at most i fear the needle of our global health meter will forever hinge upon use of petroleum combustion engines and how harmful gasses tend to be contained by atmospheric domes

imagine an ugly yeti igloo cooler mating in reverse

Here's my day so far. Pet sitting for my brother. Pack bag for three days. Somehow took two pairs of pants and shorts and one shirt, the one I'm wearing.

Not bad. I can always take one of my brother's. Get to his house, punch in the door combination, and go in to feed the cat and dog. Okay so far.

Go out to my car to grab the bag. Door closes and I forgot the combination.Left phone inside the house, so I can't call to get the code. After trying the sliding glass door (locked). Fortunately I had my keys, so I drove to my other brother's house.

On the way, I had to go to the bathroom real bad. Pull into a convenience store. Men's room is occupied , so I ask the woman at the register if I can use the women's bathroom. She agrees.

Get to my brother's house. He's not home, but my nephew's girlfriend is there. She calls my nephew who calls my brother and gets the code.

I drive back and open the door. Text my sister-in-law to tell her I'm all set. She tells me I could have used the front door because it's always open.

It's called progress.

I need to go back to work in a couple weeks. For the first time in years, I'm not looking forward to it.

I think AI has something to do with it. Or maybe I'm getting too old for this.

Maybe it's time to retire, but I'm not sure how to fill up all the days.

Hobbies? Travel? Professional pet sitting? In any event you gotta stay busy or you go crazy. I am sorta lucky because my profession (trading) is unretireable from. Its there every day if I want to do it. I almost never day trade anymore but I always keep a toe in the water with longer term trades. So I have a daily structure based around the markets. They are secondary now though and I feel free to travel or blow it off on any given day should a more enticing activity show up. I find myself reading a lot more than I used to.

golf

An option certainly. But that's only for about six months maybe.

Nah, just golf in Florida or some such after the fall season.

You have the right instinct, John. Make sure you have an idea of what to do post-work before pulling the trigger. It's great for a few weeks to have nothing to do and just laze around, but that gets pretty old, pretty fast.

Man, this summer has just been flying by! All of these back-to-school ads are depressing me. Seems like school starts earlier every year? My Nephews kids are going back on Monday! We always went back in September? I just can't imagine going to school in 90+ degree August heat.

Anyway its been a great summer so far with a couple of fun trips and a couple more to come. My beloved Whte Sox suck balls again but my "secondary" Brew Crew are running away with the best record in baseball! And burying the dreaded Cubs in the process which is the cherry on top 😀
