The Best Home Defense Shotgun for Beginners that is legal in all 50 states

Whats up everyone, I was doing a lot of research on home defense shotguns about a year ago. Figured i'd share what I learned for anyone looking into protecting their house/family.

I found basically the perfect shotgun:
- holds 14 rounds
- smallest shotgun available that is legal in all 50 states
- no recoil
- big variety of legit good home defense ammo
- no permit needed( because it is a pump shotgun )
- Good Price (around $400-$500)
- looks cool as hell
- you can buy training dummy shells to practice pumping and loading at home

Anyone looking for a good home defense shotgun that someone of any size and stature can use that is beginner friendly, check out the Keltec KSG410 :

I am a real person by the way, i realize this reads like some kind of advertisement

Why would you prefer this over some Mossberg or Remington 12 Gauge?

I can assure you that this thing has a recoil which doesn't even matter and if you can't take care of business with 6-8 rounds, you likely won't be able to do much better with 14.

Plus, cheaper, more proven and you're not firing from a measly 410 bore.

Also, and more importanty, I don’t know your experience level, but the best way to figure out what firearm works for you is to shoot and handle your way into a weapon that you like, as opposed to just picking from specs online. Go get your hands dirty and shoot some **** and learn the weight, ergonomics, and controls, and see what fits your body and see if you can actually shoot without losing your mind.

Guns give me the creeps .... I know that the USA is flooded with them but I'm not joining the party.

I don't like the idea of living with a sufficient amount of fear that I am in need of a gun in order to feel safe.

My summary of the OP

Tell me you have a small weiner without telling me you have a small weiner.

You lost me when you stated that your defensive weapon "looks cool as hell".

Have you actually defended you home with this thing or are you just bullshitting?

Very unlikely. Home invasions aren't exactly a common occurrence. I would be very curious to see what other steps people like OP take to ameliorate the risk of death (or sexual assault) for someone in their household.

Let's do the math for a decade. Assume that you purchase a gun for home defense. Assume that you store the gun safely. Assume that you train yourself properly. Now let's estimate the percentage of time that you will be subject to one or more home invasions during that decade. Multiply that by the percentage of time that your use of a gun prevents you or a family member from being killed or sexually assaulted in a home invasion. Take points off for the percentage of time one or more members of your household are killed during the home invasion but would have survived but for your use of a weapon. Take points off for the percentage of time that you accidentally shoot and kill a family member who you mistakenly believe is a home invader.

I don't know how much you increase the odds for all members of your household during that decade by owning a gun, and it obviously depends on where you live, but I'm sure it is a tiny, tiny percentage. Maybe .001%? And to state the obvious, the second, third, fourth guns that you purchase to protect your home add exponentially less to your safety than the first gun.

Now think about all the other steps you could take to improve the odds for all members of your household to a comparable or greater degree? Are you taking all of those steps? Very few people are.

That's one of many reasons why I am skeptical that this is really a decision about safety for most people like OP.

I do think he is correct though that if you were to buy a gun to defend your home a shotgun should be the choice

Agreed. Use of a pistol in self-defense is best used to fight your way to your shotgun.

How long does it take to open your safe to retrieve said shotgun?

OP, if you're looking to unload a hot weapon, I'm def not paying more than $300. $400-$500 is nuts.

How much is whatever the default shotgun that released with the free trial weekend of Battlefield 6 recently? That thing was a monster. One hit kill from 60 yards with a capacity of 12 rounds.

It almost made me forget that I'm actually a <1 K/D FPS gamer for a while there.

If in the incredibly unlikely scenario that a home invasion happened and we cosplay this out irl, i would 100% be grabbing my revolver with hollow points and not a shotgun. Personally, i would like to either have my cell im my left for maybe a light or to direct my kids with my other hand than wiggling my shotgun as a finget pointer.

Plus, its a lot less holes, if any, that i would have to patch up. But the OP is extroadinarly likely to be at a higher risk of death now than before he bought thing for several reasons.

To all the people saying i am dumb for having a home defense shotgun…..what is your plan if a couple of big dudes start banging on your door and cops are 30 mins away? What is your plan if you hear noises downstairs while in your bedroom? Pray the bad guy doesn’t come and rape/stab/shoot you? For real, what do you do?

.410 gets a bad rap, it is plenty to kill someone dead. I have a Mossberg also, prefer the KSG. The KSG’s pump is much smoother, and the pistol grip + small length is easy to maneuver

3 inch 000 buckshot has 5 pellets, 4 buck has 9 pellets and pdx defenders have 4 buckshot disks and 16 BB’s in every shot, i wouldnt call that “measly”

What is your plan for owning a bunch of weapons and then no big dudes invade your home?

I was robbed at gun point in my apartment once for the copious amounts of marijuana in my possession.
Another time, an ex girlfriends brother broke in and stole my guns.

Neither time would a gun have helped me

You're mainly dumb for trying to sell a hot weapon on an obscure, dying politics forum; owning a shotgun is just icing on the cake.

Last time an intruder entered the property at 3am, they ran away as soon as I switched a light on.

Just make sure you clean it well with some Dawn and warm water

Unsurprising. A vanishingly tiny percentage of burglaries involve homicides.

I'm about to get in a taxi. If the taxi driver locked the doors, drove me to a remote location, and then threatened to leave me tied to a tree in the wilderness, would I be happy if I had a small handgun in my computer bag? Sure.

In a few weeks, I'm going to spend the night in a high-rise hotel. If the hotel catches caught fire, would I be happy if I had packed a gas mask and flame ******ant clothing in my suitcase? Sure.

There are a million tiny background risks in life that I could to spend money or time to try and mitigate. I don't do so because it isn't worth my time or money.

If you want to own a shotgun, you have that right. But unless you have very special circumstances, don't indulge in the fantasy that you are making yourself a lot safer by doing so. Just acknowledge that you like owning a gun for whatever the actual reason is.

He owns a gun in case the government deploys the national guard on US soil

Same!

Who is selling a shotgun? I would never sell my baby
