I'm about to get in a taxi. If the taxi driver locked the doors, drove me to a remote location, and then threatened to leave me tied to a tree in the wilderness, would I be happy if I had a small handgun in my computer bag? Sure. In a few weeks, I'm going to spend the night in a high-rise hotel. If the hotel catches caught fire, would I be happy if I had packed a gas mask a

What fantasy world do you live in where home invasions don’t occur?

They obviously occur. Deaths from home invasions are just incredibly rare. As I said, there are a lot of remote risks that I don't take extraordinary steps to protect myself from.

Maybe you are just a much more fearful person than I am.

what is your plan if a couple of big dudes start banging on your door and cops are 30 mins away?

I would answer the door.

What world do you live in that you think one is likely? Are you a drug dealer?

What is wrong with you trolls?

You made the OP and I offered my opinion on it.

I don't think a "beginner" should take advice from the particular OP on a poker forum from a new account. I think the beginner should first take a lesson, preferably with a certified firearms instructor, not cousin Billy who happens to have something that looks sick as ****.

Then they can shoot first, discuss their situation, needs, shortcomings, storage and so on and go from there.

I am also not sure what it is that you are doing here. You claimed to have been doing research for about a year and have come to the conclusion that you did. Congrats.

But everyone is different, and it shouldn't matter if someone in this thread disagrees with you on either what you should own or the particular threat level you think is around you.

He owns a gun in case the government deploys the national guard on US soil

The government is well ahead of us. They have drones.

Pump action shotguns are rather difficult to use in a high stress situation. People can forget they need to use the pump action in order to keep firing

A much better alternative is a semi automatic , beretta A300 or a mossberg 930

An AR15 is a superior home defense weapon but a shotgun is a great alternative

Guns give me the creeps .... I know that the USA is flooded with them but I'm not joining the party.

I don't like the idea of living with a sufficient amount of fear that I am in need of a gun in order to feel safe.

This is my sentiment as well.

Just make sure you clean it well with some Dawn and warm water

For a clean kill!

Formula72 not a troll.

He's actually one of the few posters in this forum who isn't consistently ridiculous.

Where would you keep the gun to maximize your chance of having it near you should your home get invaded?

There are multiple entry points in a house, and all kinds of places in your house that you could be at any time.

Just wondering the odds of you being able to access the shotgun and readying yourself in time.

PS> I agree that for the "some crazies banging on the door trying to get in, " or "there are people on your property trying to find a way in," that it would be good for those situations.

The bolded is the key to conversations like this imo.

And people who own guns out of fear are probably more likely to accidently injure or kill an innocent person than someone who own guns just because they enjoy owning guns.

Random anecdote. I dated a girl quite some time ago that kept a gun under her pillow. I was unaware for a while until I spotted it one morning. We had a discussion about it and she agreed to put it in her nightstand.

You know geezer, you're growing on me. One of the few right wingers that actually thinks about the opposing argument.

All things considered, I would probably agree with this.

FWIW, this is probably true for a lot of criminals as well. If I were in a bank when an armed robbery occurred, I suspect that I would be safer if the bank robbers were grizzled veterans rather than scared shitless kids.

It probably depends on the situation. If two crazy meth heads with guns were banging on your front door in the suburbs, and your house had a back door, I suspect that law enforcement would advise you to run out the back door and call the cops.

This is a deal breaker. If someone thinks it's cool to have a loaded gun in bed with me and doesn't tell me, I'm done.

Yeah, it’s going to be different in different places but many don’t view setting an ambush to kill intruders as self defense.

I had poor role models as a child.
