it's a really weird hill to die on stanning for a phrase or concept you never once heard of before by a person who themselves admitted they found zero evidence of it and was basing their stance on hearsay

what in the incel hell are you ranting about. we are having a conversation about foreign phrases. no one is dying on a hill or arguing.

I wasn't even talking to you.

Reading about the Falun Gong now, thanks!

In this concept, "cultivation" refers to upgrading one's xīnxìng 心性 (mind-nature) through abandoning negative attachments and assimilating oneself to "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance"

cool, cool

Li argues that having material possessions itself is not a problem, but that the problem is with developing attachments to material things.

right, right

Ownby interprets Li's meaning as "humans were originally gods of some sort, who lost their status as life became 'complicated' (a word with more negative connotations in Chinese than in English) and they engaged in immoral behavior.

erm, okay...

Li Hongzhi teaches that aliens introduced science into the world with the ill intention to use human bodies

uh oh

The founder taught that homosexuality makes one "unworthy of being human", creates bad karma, and is comparable to organized crime

oh dear

that touring Chinese Opera Ballet thing Shen Yun is Falun Gong

it's like if Morgan Wallen toured China for the GOP

i've heard you don't forgive people because they deserve it. you forgive them because they need it.

i've also heard it's healthy for the forgiver. but is it?

like should you forgive Hitler? what if Hitler was your dad? would that make a difference?

I think maybe some people should not be forgiven, especially if they don't change

read this interview time did with their founder - it's pretty astounding this man has millions of followers

https://time.com/archive/6954898/intervi...

the big reason its banned in china was in addition to standard cult stuff of "give me all your money" they also told their adherents not to seek medical attention for anything because using qi correctly will fix that

gentle reminder, that millions of chinese americans are people who are in that cult so take whatever they say with a heavy grain of salt

Forgiving folks isn't about them, it is about radical acceptance of whatever.

You're not saying their behavior was ok. You're saying it's not your problem anymore.

The true wisdom eye sees that the most radical acceptance is always needed within.

If Hitler was my dad I would write a book called My Dad Was an Ass Hole by Amplify Hitler

"my dad was an ******* by amplify Hitler" lol

and ok, so if I'm just saying their behavior is not my problem anymore... that seems more like walking away than forgiving.

my mom is old, and not too much time left. she was, and still is, a nightmare mother. I really think it's best for me if I just walk away. but it seems like every person on earth says I should forgive her and have a relationship with her.

I shouldn't say every person on earth. the people who sadly understand what it's like to have a terrible parent don't universally say I should forgive. maybe 30% of them do.

Filthy I still remember those photos you posted of your parents. Seemed like a happy time! Makes me smile.

My dad disowned me before he died. I did not inherit. I did visit him at the hospital as he was dying but left after fifteen minutes. He did not even recognize me at first.

My dad is 92 and in bad shape. I'm infinitely glad we had a chance to set things right before he got to this point.

But given his nature, he'd have kept me in the will even if we hadn't. He's always been different in his thinking about things, or he'd never have carved out his unique brand of atheistic Ozark stoicism.

His thinking days are sure over now; he still knows who I am most days but I doubt he even knows himself anymore.

sorry you guys had difficulties with your parents - really puts the minor annoyances and squabbles i have with mine in perspective

still a big fan of forgiveness with family though

that's nice 😀

and yeah, of course there were SOME happy times. we had millions of interactions and memories. 990k of them were harmful. maybe 500ish happy ones.

I hear this kind of thing a lot. but I think "family" means wildly different things to different people. and for people who had basically healthy relationships with family, it's kind of impossible to truly understand what it's like to have basically harmful relationships with family. it's just completely different.

4 of my close family members are narcissists, some of them have been in constant litigation against each other for years and trying their hardest to make life difficult for each other

i understand it pretty well - just don't let it get to me and treat it much like this

it's honestly rather refreshing to spend time around them because i obviously have many of those traits myself and it helps me better recognize it in myself seeing it ramped up to 11 with them

it's given me a lot of perspective and definitely helped me improve a lot - not just in my own mental health but in how i treat others

that's pretty much it exactly

Proof that nut-jobs exist on both sides. The guy defines fringe. The question is does anyone seriously follow or care about this dude?

I've never heard of him.

They might, and hear me out on this one, I don't want to be an alarmist or anything, use it to smuggle the idea directly into a White House Press Briefing.

Thank you for falling into my trap.

Mark *whistles happily sauntering down the street*

Amp *drops a cartoon safe on him*

That’s all, folks!
