2024 Fantasy Football Thread
Welcome to the 2024 fantasy season, where I'm officially addicted to best ball. I've been drafting since the end of Jan
Final product. TE is certainly the weakest room. Took the safe(ish) pick with Chig, and then went with 2 boom or bust players.
Burrow, Herbert
KW, Tracy, Dobbins, Tuten, BRob, Blue
Chase, Ladd, Tee, Jamo, Addison, Coker, Noel
Chig, Fannin, Gadsen
Just finished my second guilotine draft. It went okay as it could I think from the 11th spot out of 14. Yahoo projections have me ranked 3rd for week one so I am hoping I am safe.
I really like this format and will be doing one more tomorrow and that will likely be my last league this year unless I degen out next week 😀 In addition to my normal 2 QB league I have done a couple of cheapo best ball drafts on DK but I am not a fan of best ball or the DK interface. Best ball is the crappiest of all crap shoots which fantasy football is anyway. Guilotines seem to involve a lot more skill and strategy if you can survive a couple of weeks by managing your team and fab and wire. The draft and pray style of best ball doesn't excite me.
Anyway from the 11 of 14 spots I got this with 1 QB/2RB/2WR/1TE/1FLEX standard Yahoo scoring. I like no K or DST too 😀
1. (11) Nico Collins (Hou - WR)
2. (18) Chase Brown (Cin - RB)
3. (39) Mike Evans (TB - WR)
4. (46) Davante Adams (LAR - WR)
5. (67) Aaron Jones Sr. (Min - RB)
6. (74) David Njoku (Cle - TE)
7. (95) J.K. Dobbins (Den - RB)
8. (102) Drake Maye (NE - QB)
9. (123) Darnell Mooney (Atl - WR)
10. (130) Bhayshul Tuten (Jax - RB)
11. (151) Jalen Coker (Car - WR)
12. (158) Xavier Legette (Car - WR)
13. (179) Woody Marks (Hou - RB)
14. (186) Mike Gesicki (Cin - TE)
Like my WRs and RBs are weak but with 14 teams you really can't have both. In this format there is a run on both TE and QB in round 6/7 which totally makes sense since you want zero holes on week one.
You've got a solid base and should be able to keep improving that squad as the season goes on.
Best ball is a lot of fun, but it's a lot like large field MTTs. Sure, you could play a few here and there and maybe get really lucky and bink. But it's likely you're not going to realize your edge without substantial volume. And even then, it's going to be really tough. And while you're using the same players to play the game, best ball is simply a different theory proposition.
In my roughly 1200 teams drafted, I'm expected to make around 3.5 finals based on the advance rates. I'm hoping to meet or beat that expectation, but it's also very realistic that I make zero finals. And then even when you make the finals, your team has to perform well to make decent money. It's certainly a crapshoot where you could go a lifetime of playing and never realize your expected value, due to the single season slate nature of the game, plus the bankroll required to play substantial volume.
DFS also requires a similar volume proposition, but that one is easier to realize given how many slates there are throughout the season and how many lineups you can play on a weekly basis if you put in the time and effort.

Keeping with the poker analogy. Best ball is preflop play and guilotine is post flop play. Standard leagues just suck 😀 My 2 QB league is more kill based because it has so many playable positions coupled with few bench spots forcing you to be a manager where standard leagues become much more luck based. Plus head to head play is just ridiculously bad and coin flippy.
I prefer to be a manager. I retired from fantasy baseball because the season is too long and too much of a grind but I had an exceptional record in "rotiserrie" which meant managing a team all season long which I loved, H2H fantasy is something I absolutely despised which is the fantasy football model. Guilotine seems like the best "managers" will make the money.

Haha I like that pre/post flop analogy.
Agreed on Guillotine. It rewards the most skilled and those who can pay attention and manage their rosters the best. There is also a decent amount of game theory when it comes to FAAB and trying to read your other leaguemates.
If waivers weren't my least favorite part of fantasy, then I'd fire a few Guillotine leagues. But I really don't enjoy waivers, which is why I mostly play dynasty for my managed leagues. Dynasty also has a pretty heavy skill element to it in the long run, especially when it comes to trading and rookie evaluation.
Lol they really don't have a second RB? I have seen teams so bad they have to take a zero but not usually in week 1. I haven't really analyzed Sleeper week 1 projections, but Tracy projected for 17.48 is also hilarious.

I love the idea of dynasty and keeper leagues I have just never had and opportunity to get involved.

They had spears and Mixon haha
The league has a lot of dumb scoring rules (.15 pts per rb 1st down, .25 yds per carry or something )
I missed some of the rules at startup so I undervalued rb
Year 23 of my friends league. 2QB, half PPR, we voted to turn one RB spot into a flex, so it’s 2QB/2WR/RB/TE/2flex.
Did this draft while I was at the emergency vet because my dog ate a corn cob. Missed the first round pick, it took Josh Allen for me. Fine with it.
QB: Allen/ J Love / T Law
WR: Nico / Devonte Smith/ Pearsall / Tet McMillan / Keenan Alllen
RB: J Taylor / Ken Walker / O Hampton / J Croskey Merrit
TE: Evan Engram.
People went heavy QB and WR the first three rounds and I just kept taking running backs cause I didn’t like the remaining field. Taylor, Hampton, Walker in rounds 3-5. Probably should have taken a WR instead of Walker? Could have gotten McLaurin, Waddle, Garret Wilson or MHJ.
Felt like value at the time, but looking back I might have ended up capping the ceiling for a high floor.
Hopefully one of the young WRs pops. Gonna hold them for awhile no matter what. Cost myself the league last year cause I dropped BTJ after two weeks. Eek.
I prefer Walker to those WRs you listed and think you ended up with a really good WR room. It’s a good team.
More importantly, how’s your dog?
I admittedly don't know dick about Best Ball. But the couple I have played Tyson Bagent is always my last pick. This because when Williams gets hurt/benched Bagent will become a top 10 QB. It's only a matter of time!
Some solo TE fun. Actually wanted to take a TE where I got Higgins, but I literally didn't see Warren even though he was right there.
Hurts, JJM
KW, Pacheco, Sampson, Gordon, Shipley, Giddens, Pierce
JJ, AJB, Reek, Addison, Higgins, Godwin, TeSlaa, Malik
Kraft
12-Team PPR, #4 Pick
QB, 3WR, 2RB, 2 Flex, TE, DEF, K
I like the 1st half of the draft, then seemingly got sniped everywhere. Waited for TE and Loveland got taken 1 pick before Ferguson. At least I got all of my sleeper picks!
Last 2 picks (not shown) are getting dropped for the Kicker and Def.
1. (4) Justin Jefferson (WR)
2. (21) A.J. Brown (WR)
3. (28) Lamar Jackson (QB)
4. (45) James Conner (RB)
5. (52) Chuba Hubbard (RB)
6. (69) Aaron Jones Sr. (RB)
7. (76) Matthew Golden (WR)
8. (93) Zach Charbonnet (RB)
9. (100) Darnell Mooney (WR)
10. (117) Jake Ferguson (TE)
11. (124) Najee Harris (RB)
12. (141) Chig Okonkwo (TE)
13. (148) Pat Bryant (WR)
14. (165) Tory Horton (WR)
15. (172) Kyle Monangai (RB)
^ solid squad.

Haha, it’s not the most optimal way to play, but anything can work. Drew Lock was on 1 DK Milly final team last year and helped them to a top 5 or so finish.

Looks solid. I woulda waited for a lessor QB buts thats me 😀 Lamar has been and likely will be awesome. I would bet Ferguson outscores Loveland this year too!

Williams is the second coming of Jamies Winston/ Marcus Mariotta only worse. He is a bust pure and simple. Of the last 3 premier Bears QB draft picks: Trubisky, Fields, Williams Trubisky is the best. Yeah I am a disgruntled Bears fan 😀
Hey guys, here are my exposures to players in UD ten man bestball. The players in green I'm trying to bring up and the players in red I'm slowing down on.
I recently read that if you like a player you should be anywhere from 15% to 35% on them. I'd like to be 35% plus on players like Pickens, Egbuka, Mason. I'm open to any feedback or comments. Cheers.

Great way to describe Guillotine leagues! I do mdot20's 2+2 league with a bunch of randoms and its the draft I look forward to the most. Really requires you to put some thought in.
My friend league is just guys I worked with in 2009 and feels more like I keep doing it out of obligation - was a blast when we would get together in a bar and draft on paper but now that its online its just picking random names from an ADP list and hoping for the best.

No Mahomes?
How much exposure you have is really a product of your risk tolerance, but I do try to cap my exposure more on the guys in the first 3 rounds or so.

Big guy seems ok. I caught him eating it off the kids plate and pulled like a third of it out of his mouth. Vet had him puke it out, did an X-ray to make sure no big pieces. He’s been sad, but poop looks alright and no vomiting so I think he’ll be fine.
If I win this league, it’ll just barely cover the bill!
Handsome boy. Glad to hear he’ll be okay. The emergency vet definitely isn’t cheap. I’ve made a few trips with my animals. Hopefully you can win and break even! Haha

My Thai in laws just throw chicken bones from the dining room table to their dog to munch on. 1st time I saw them do it I basically lost my **** like wtf are you doing? They're like it's a Thai dog it's fine. 8 years later the thing was still kicking.
Fields, Bryce
Chuba, Pacheco, Benson, Sampson, Keaton, Giddens
Nabers, Tee, JSN, Tet, Shakir, Godwin, XL
Warren, Theo, Higbee

This guy is a rescue with a tough stomach. He literally ate a small live bird the second night I had him and was totally fine.
Still, didn’t want to chance it. Couple years of easy living might have softened him up.
