is calling A9o from the CO against MP jam a good move at 10bb?
Hi all,
I was a bit surprised when I open jammed TT off approx. 10bb from MP and the next player called. I thought, well 2 overs or a higher pair, sometimes i am lucky and it is 99 or 88.
He had A9o.
I thought this is a big punt, why would he call such a hand. The guy had over 230k in earnings, so he definitely knows what he is doing.
Assuming the normal push fold charts, i guess it might make sense, since i am supposed to jam any pair, and a lot of worse Ax. But in practice i do not do that, i would probably jam only 77 and AT.
So was he reacting normally to my jam? Or was it indeed a bit loose?
Thanks for any input.

it's a bit too loose. if it's on gg, gg stats don't show profit, but winnings. It can be an indicator of experience, but not necessarily skill.
regards the spot, not only your stack matters, but also the stacks of the other players.
if villain has 50 bigs and everyone else too, it's different than if he has 10 bigs himself.

Thanks for the input! Very helpful to get some confirmation.
He had the exact stack as me, we both late regged (or maybe he re-entered or blinded up and down, in any case he had starting stack). It was 10min left of registration, average was maybe 30bb, there were a few with around 20-40bb at the table, but most were around 10bb or under. So we were a short stacked table.
It was maybe the 3rd hand I played.
I know regarding the GG winnings, it's true it might be he plays high stakes or high volume and might be even a losing player. If I remember correctly he also had some badge, or maybe i am recalling badly.
This was after the hand, in the moment I shoved i did not pay attention to what the profile of everyone else is. I thought TT was a clear jam. Ended up losing.
yeah TT is a jam.
if players have badges I usually give them more credit.
if he called you with A5off we'd be slowly getting into punt territory. A9off is slightly off.
with a bigger stack he'd have to take more care, since he'd be potentially risking more than 10 bigs if someone behind him wakes up with a strong hand.
It's maybe a little wide for the positions-- maybe (at chipEV A9o is the worst offsuit ace villain should call with here)-- but I also suspect that given the situation you described, villain is willing to gamble a little to try to double up and build a stack before late registration ends.
Your position is the hijack (or UTG/5 if you want to think of it that way); try to be more specific about exactly where you are at the table in order to get the best advice possible.

Then your jamming ranges are too tight, maybe much too tight. Your calling ranges may be too tight as well (although probably not to the extreme of your shoving ranges).
Yes, TT is an extremely easy jam here. Sometimes you do everything right and still lose. That's poker.
Thank you both for the advice 😀
Just a cooler. I would be jamming TT 100% of the time here
Villain probably thought you would be jamming any PP and most AXs hands and possibly hands like 2 broadways and maybe some SC's.
Personally my calling range would likely be AT+/66+ but at 10 bb's with the same stack as you then I get the call. Especially with registration still open (not that I would buy back in for 10 bb's but maybe that is what he was thinking)
While its hard to be happy when you get knocked out in these spots just remember that 70% of the time you will double up and have a decent shot at the money.
Looks like A9o is a slightly +EV according to my solver if someone is shoving a GTO range barring any heavy ICM considerations. I don't think most people shove close to GTO range though, so it's likely losing.
