Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.

That just looks like an older Sharon Stone. I took a look at her instagram and she seems to look, again, like an older Sharon Stone. Maybe there are some other pics but I don't see any crazy plastic surgery. She has wrinkles and jowls. Looks like an attractive 60+ woman to me.
Not crazy about the new Long Walk trailer with the actors talking but the additional footage looks great.
Maybe the original trailer wasn’t testing well with people unfamiliar with the book, especially the college demo.
Jared Leto in the new Tron, sigh.

Colors was pretty meh in my very dim recollection, with Penn being especially bad, but however
Duvall did typically GOAT it up with the two bulls bit, and Frog saying Homes every other word was kinda funny and a good drinking game, but the theater was dead silent during

And again, Penn & MC Alonso make Leo & Diaz in GONY look like Leo & Winslet in Titanic they’re so bad.
Ran directed by Kurosawa.
Kurosawa's take on King Lear. Father cedes his power and three castles to his sons. As in Lear, the two elder sons lavish him with praise and betray him while the youngest son tells his father the truth. Naturally, the father, in essence, won't hear the truth.
Disaster ensues. The second son attacks the eldest, taking his castle, land, and wife, who will then plot to murder the eldest son's wife. As in Lear, the youngest son dies as does the father.
Kurosawa eliminates the Gloucester subplot from the film but retains the fool and most of the story.
The final shot of the film is haunting.
It's one of my favorite film adaptations of Lear alongside Kozintsev's and Kurosawa's Throne of Blood.
Harold Bloom, the eminent Shakespeare scholar, named Kurosawa's versions the best film adaptations of Shakespeare although neither uses Shakespeare's words.
The Kozintsev's version of Lear, Karol Lir, is on YouTube, and it captures the medieval setting of Lear. It's well worth seeing.

I saw Ran in the theaters when it was first released. Glorious.
Next week at my revival theater, I'm going to see two Asian classics: John Woo's The Killer and Tsui Hark's Peking Opera Blues. Can't wait.
First three movies I saw with ex-girlfriend: Altered States, Kagemusha, and Local Hero.
First movie I saw with my wife: Wings of Desire. She said she didn't like it. Three days later, she said she couldn't stop thinking about it. She was the keeper.

Common misconception. Ran is really a remake of an earlier movie called Lady Snowblood.
The tip-off is the rape scene. After Lady Kaede rapes Jiro at knife point, she offers to make an honest man of him if he performs a small task for her, whereas after Cordelia rapes the fool, she merely gives him half a Snickers bar and bus fare. I might not be remembering all the details correctly, but that's how you tell that they're not the same.
If you have a chance to see this flick in a theater, it will knock your socks off. Color!

I've only seen Blues at home, never on the big screen I'm curious if the subtitles will be as laughably bad as my DVD is...I love that movie so much and the funny subtitles is part of the charm.

saw ran in a film class in college and was less about the film and more about comparing the original theatrical formatting to the one cut to fit a tv screen - showing how it was ok when you reformatted ace ventura but not so much ran because the simultaneous reaction of characters on polar opposite sides of the screen couldn't be seen on the reformatted cut

This was the old pan and scan. Often you would see characters on opposite sides with a long space between them. The pan and scan would cut a shot intended for a theatrical showing in two or three separate shots, eliminating the master shot.
Or instead of using a two or three shots, the sides of the film would be eliminated to fit the 4:3 TV screen.
Fortunately, letterboxing solved part of the problem, and wide screen TVs allowed for correct aspect ratios although extreme aspect ratios, 2.5:1,for example, still need to use the letterboxing.

Weapons (2025)
I really liked this one, told from multiple perspectives, regarding the mass disappearance of children and attempts by a teacher and parent to solve the mystery. While I didn't think it quite lived up to the hype surrounding it and wasn't as blown away by it as others apparently have been, it's still very good and definitely recommended.

Yeah, Kurosawa loved trolling like this. Sidney Lumet was asking the question.
Watched Winter Kills last night. What an odd film, but it stars a bunch of great actors, including Jeff Bridges, John Huston, Eli Wallace, Sterling Hayden, and in small roles, Elizabeth Taylor and Toshiro Miifune!
Basically it's about a presidential assassination with the president's step-brother trying to find out who killed his step-brother. The plot is contrived and convoluted. I found the movie hilarious. You will figure it out within a few minutes, but enjoy it for what it is, a takeoff on the JFK assassination.
