i obv know nothing about this guy. idk how we can discount post (or hand) because he didn't pick one random person i've never heard of over another

if we have no clue what to do, i'd rather pick a word that also works for sports, mostly because i really ****ing hate the church connection. yes i know it's a thing, but there is a reason we had it 9th? 10th?

3 options:

wind - this is for czech genius and we can makeup wind; perhaps some "lightness of being" wind connection also? unsure...and wind sports are a thing

hollywood - this is for czech genius and hollywood since his book was made into a movie; he could have done euro director, but maybe he was thinking more strictly Czech so went with Kundera; and sports movies are a thing so could also have sports connection

post- potential writer connection; maybe something like postmodernism or other esoteric genres applies as well? some sports connection with goal posts, post up in basketball, etc

we can probably limit our options to those 3 so we can get to a guess?

ok, pros and cons:

they clued metallic and relaxing

perhaps less likely post is theirs

wind pros:
on our list so ours if unlimited wanted all 3 left on list and clue was just for Czech genius
hits sports pretty well
if wind is ours, there isn't really a better path for him
he chose 0 clue on turn 2 instead of cluing words and letting us make up lap as first on list; no danger word at top, 2nd word was neutral; so didn't need to clue 0 on turn 2 but chose to; if we had 3 on that list that could be why; otherwise could have clued crusades - 2 to get force/church and top of list lap and we would be done with sports
potentially hits clue? who knows?

wind cons:
with force/church we technically may have our 5 sports
he may have done 2 clue just to get force/church bc didn't have better clue for those 2 (crusades - 2 gets force/church and makeup lap, though)

if we had noticed ice cave turn 2, we would know 100% if wind is ours here or not, so ugh at putting ourselves in this situation

I really like wind for sports and for makeup and for how this round has gone

Hollywood pros:
his book was made into a movie so Hollywood technically fits, even if weakish
if missing a sports word, Hollywood hits sports as a genre of movies

Hollywood cons:
why not Herzog or some other clue that hits film harder with European genius? this clue is pretty esoteric so why stretch so much to a lesser known name?

decent, but if play the 'why not this clue' game then not good; but that is a dangerous game to play

Post pros:
could be stretchy connection to writing or post-modernism or something else
could hit sports if need a sports word

Post cons:
pretty stretchy clue
Kafka is about 10x better known so why not him instead?

I'm pretty meh on post; it feels like grasping for something to guess when we already have 2 good options to flip between

I'm 60% wind, 30% Hollywood, 10% post as of now

i'd go with post from those options

for wind to be ours, diab would have had to clue calf with our list being red/red/blue (calf)/red. i guess it could be a level, but seems unlikely. i sure wouldn't risk doing that as spymaster. it's also probably the best fit for their last relaxing word

haven't thought about what i'd clue for hollywood, but it would 100% not be this

hollywood does not hit sports at all imo

you can make an argument for 90% of the list if you include hollywood

there are plenty of sports related movies to choose from that would be more specific than a generic clue that hits half the list

Ugh, yeah d1 unblocking wind with animals clue is bad for wind

Animals was a lock for those 2 so why not clue it last and clue the other 2 first in case their team got those wrong?

If both locks, why unblock wind if it’s ours?

It just Czech/genius then Einstein or others coulda worked also

Guessing the next word on their list and one they openly talked about as being their 3rd metallic word was a choice.

Sports was maybe a little aggressive, but I thought we could get there in 3 even missing a few.

Missing ice cave didn't hurt us too bad.

The last sports word (and last Kundera word) was hand. Church wasn't a sports thing, but I had to go with it. Didn't think you'd be familiar with Alphonse Mucha or any lesser known Czech painters, so went with their most famous writer, hoping you'd get to hand.

Almost got there.

for some reason I thought they had their words, but should have gone back and re-looked at their list; my bad, that def should have been on the cons list and discussed before we fired post :(

The reason I was annoyed was because you weren't giving me anything to work with. There was 0 discussion of the clues, and you left no lists, so I had no idea if I had to reclue words or what. You also just snap bolded next word on blue's list without any consideration, and didn't even bother to go back to the previous clue before you fired.

So then I had to either give a 2 clue and hope to get another turn (which I really didn't think we would), or give an unlimited clue and hope that you would interpret it correctly AND be able to give the correct remaining backups. Both of those options sucked hard.

If you had just made these posts on turn 2, then this game would've been over last turn:

We got very lucky to win that round even though it should've been 100%.

I really shouldn't have said anything mid-game tho, sorry.

yeah it's why i don't like the list variant

now that i think about it, i really wanted to put hand near the top of the backup list, but it was already so big, i just copied nich's 😆

I usually try to limit list to no more than same size as clue, but when you come out with 5 clue for generic term like sports then the list is gonna be longer

Yeah, but the the longer the list, the more likely you are to spurs some words, which is not really how the game should be played. You essentially had half of the board on the list (and still whiffed 1 of them lol).

And actually I've seen some other games where teams will just chuck on a random word or 2 hoping to get lucky. That should definitely not be allowed imo.

yea we shoulda given you a little more to work with, at the same time I don't like having more than 1 or 2 backup words

lists of many words IMO shouldn't be in the spirit of the game, it'll just devolve into

then can angle if it's an easy 3 to put 3 unrelated ones on the list, and spymaster can clue unlimited and get completely unrelated words that have never been clued just because of the list. and then if you don't get an unlimited you can deduce the top backup word is wrong, so every turn can just throw a random word to the top of the list and get more information that way

kinda goes against the spirit of the game and how it should be played imo

The spirit of the game is playing it in person, guessing one word at a time and getting confirmation before each.

If we do THAT, then it would take forever.

If we don't do that, then lists get difficult to rule on or not.

Not really, just set a number and be done with it. In person, you're still having a discussion, so the spy should at least have an idea of where you're heading. Having a "list" of 1 or 2 backup words is basically the same thing.
