Rivers Casino (Des Plaines, IL)

I was cruising in the O'hare area recently and saw the new Rivers Casino off the highway. Any plans for poker at that l

"tight" games
Rivers is the loosest, most wild room in the entire midwest.
Please, tell me a room that has more action.

Which game are you playing?

I don't think it's even the "wildest" room in Chicagoland let alone the midwest lol. Games are generally ok but on the tighter side for sure - I actually play 1-3 instead of 2-5 there because I find most of the 2-5 games too nitty.

by TheGramuel

This is basically the only time I can see it happening, or maybe daytimes Tues-Weds too.

I've actually been playing at Wind Creek recently despite it being a 15-20m longer drive for me, the games I find are so much better there, and people actually buy in for money, and the clientele are generally fine, both unlike Elgin.

Does wind creek have tournaments?

No idea. There's never been one while I've been there, their website might say though.

Rivers 2/5 NL is among the worst 2/5 games in the whole country

Yes we know you think this, they definitely can be not great which is why I tend to play 1-3 (or play 2-5 at Wind Creek). That said, midweek games seem to be pretty good on the whole. I also don't see them as notably worse than Vegas/Parx/Borgata etc, but sample size....

The most annoying thing is that everybody straddles yet buys in shallow, so you're often playing 2-5-10 but with a 60bb effective stack with most people at table etc - just becomes correct to be nitty af.

Speaking of a bad crowd at Rivers. And the fool came back!

He had a gun INSIDE the casino when he came back? Is that what that is saying?

The wording had me wondering the same thing but aren't there metal detectors at every entrance every casino in IL? My wife says she gets stopped at GVC from the zippers and other metal crap in her purse.

I could only guess that they somehow spotted and nabbed him in the parking lot - when he still had the gun - but I can't see security operating THAT quickly.

I suspect they were actively watching for a return

Good point. Maybe the security or casino staff recognized the guy as a regular and were looking for him.

I've been plenty mad after losing games/hands but never enough to randomly shoot a gun in a parking garage.

Incorrect, they got him once inside the casino. The metal detector is shyt. Multiple players are packing, be careful who you yell at after getting your Aces cracked.

New account signed up just for this? Hmmmmm

I'm a reg there, prefer not to use main account.

How do you know multiple players are packing? Considering that I've been pulled up for way less metal than a gun I find this surprising...

I play full time, I know just about everyone there. Part of being a good poker player is being HIGHLY observant. Always be listening at table and watching everything. I've seen multiple times someone sit and be "printing". You can see the gun holster / grip through their clothes on their waist band.

B) After talking to various regs about the recent arrest, the common consensus is there are ton's of guns at rivers.

C) A robbery, or someone being followed home to be robbed, happens there at least once a month. Personally IDC if someone conceal carries.

I bet you will care if they get drunk, get mad, and start shooting. Nobody should be concealed carry unless they are some sort of government agent working in plain clothes. And if the casino has a rule against bringing in weapons, it shouldn't be allowed at all. So many ammosexuals in America, it sucks.

With respect Greg, Rivers is a small market compared to WSOP Vegas. Vegas poker vloggers alone do you have any idea how many of them are carrying? I won't call out any individual names, but a few of them have identified themselves openly in their videos.

Vegas has liberal gun laws and it's my understanding that even though you aren't supposed to carry in a casino there, it's more or less considered normal.

Wait until someone gets mad / drunk and starts shooting is just fear mongering. I would be more concerned about the drunk drivers then getting shot.

No thanks. I would much prefer nobody have a gun. There is no upside to it for anybody. And a LOT of downside. And I don't see why it being a smaller market is relevant to anything. I will be happy when every person who brings a gun on them into the casino gets arrested and prosecuted. Spend some time in jail, and learn not to do stupid shit like that.

I think most people would agree with you and say that they prefer no one has a gun, the problem is the criminals don't agree with you. Many poker players carry thousands and thousands of dollars on their person, so I can understand them wanting to feel safe.

Small market to compare scale and sample size to Vegas. If it's effectively considered the norm in vegas, and you don't have players shooting up the pits when they lose their savings, on an 11 card BJ dealer 21, and the thousands and thousands of poker players taking bad beats arent shooting each other, I wouldn't be concerned about it.

Think the boom of Texas rooms the last 5 years or so. (We can agree many players are carrying) Seen plenty of stories about getting robbed in the strip mall parking lot, yet to see one of gunfights going down in the card room

Your example of TX works against you. If all these folks were carrying INSIDE CARD ROOMS in TX, the parking lot robberies would become parking lot shoot outs. Most TX card rooms now have metal detectors and contrary to your claims, these actually do work. Likely plenty of guns in the parking lot but don’t assume those make it into the room.

Your ‘it is common in Vegas’ is unsubstantiated and a non sequitur wrt Rivers.

BTW 11 card dealer 21 has never happened in Vegas because the 8th A makes soft 18. Most cards possible for dealer is 10, 8 2’s and 2 A or similar.

I'm going to be in town for five or six days in October to visit a couple old friends, and should have a couple days free to play poker. Does the 5/10/25 still run regularly? Last time I was in town it was an open daily game, but it was a while ago. Thanks!

I have to be back in Chicago soon, what's the status of the 5/5 nl 2k max game? Does it get going every day? Or just weekends?

I've said this before, but I feel bad for Chicagoans who have never played much in other places around the country/world. Reminds me of a fortune cookie I got one time that said "Ignorance is bliss, you must be happy"

Why do you feel bad for Chicagoans?

Only the poker players. Great city, awful for poker
