Other Texas Areas Poker
This thread is for discussion of news/events in the other areas of Texas not covered by specific Regional Threads, as well as a place to ask questions about poker in those areas. This is also the place for discussions about the smaller card rooms in the areas that do not warrant an individual venue thread.

Visited The Big Blind San Antonio this weekend
Really cool decor, why does it not get more traffic?
I was told San Antonio is the Big O capital of the world can anyone from the area testify to that? I'm curious about details as well, how many rooms run it, how often, what stakes? Thanks!
It was for quite a while. Unreal action. Kind of died off over the last few years.
Went down for a big o tournament at the lodge about a year ago and ended up playing cash at SA card house after the tournament. Big O game was good but not worth driving from Austin for. Lots of action and several players on repeated buy ins but several good players as well. Haven't been back since.

I just got back to Austin from a trip to San Antonio.
The problem with Big O cash games is they are hard to be sustainable. The good players are going to win so many sessions compared to the bad players, that eventually the bad players just dry up.
We rarely got Big O in Tampa when I lived there. If it did run, it'd be short-handed, super nitty and break in an hour or two.
At SA Card House they're getting 2-4 Big O cash games per night. It's 5/5 with straddles UTG or on the button up to $25. Buyins are $300-$3,000
My first night there I was in the 3rd game that ran. Aside from one maniac, everyone else was fairly solid. The maniac was straddling and potting pretty much every hand. He busted his stack 2-3 times and then moved over to the PLO game where that style of play might last him longer.
The 2nd night I played the table was better, as there were a number of droolers in the pots with all sorts of junky middle cards. Had one knucklehead potting preflop with QQ877 (he managed to make quads against my nut flush naturally)
So overall that game was better. For the time being the Big O seems to be going strong, time will tell if it can last. Greg Vail (author of four books on PLO8 and Big O) recently moved from Phoenix to San Antonio specifically to play those games.

Haha sounds like quite the trip Big O always feels like one of those games that’s amazing while it lasts, but yeah — the ecosystem burns out fast once the action players disappear. Gotta love those maniacs though; they keep the dream alive for a bit
That San Antonio scene actually sounds pretty wild right now — 2-4 tables a night is no joke. And Greg Vail moving there just to grind Big O kinda says it all. Guess that’s the place to be… at least until the money dries up or everyone learns to fold those beautiful QQ877s

Yeah, how long the games will be sustainable remains to be seen. But Greg actually moving there is a pretty solid approval of the games for sure.
