Can hero bluff this river?

Hi all,

Had this hand in a tournament last week. It's a €350 live tournament and four players remain out of about 300. The chip leader has around 30bb, two players have around 20bbs, and hero has around 15bbs. It's a mystery bounty, and most of the large bounties are gone, but there are still bounties of at least €300 for knocking out players.

PREFLOP

Folds to villain (20bbs) in the BTN, who opens to 2bbs. Villain is clearly no expert, but apparently quite a thinking player, with some experience. SB folds, hero (15bbs) is in the BB with KJ and calls.

FLOP (5.5bbs)

753

Hero checks, villain checks.

TURN (5.5bbs)

7536

Hero's range is all over this board, and he very much doubts villain is checking overpairs on the flop. In other words, villain likely has overcards that he'll fold to pressure. Hero bets 3.5bbs, villain thinks for a moment and calls (WTF, was not expecting that)...

RIVER (12.5bbs)

7536A

Hero...?

For me - to start from the beginning. I think jamming pre here is fine 4 handed and with 15bbs.

2nd - as played, donk lead flop. Like you said on the turn, board hits our range - lead flop. Barrell turn.

As played, I think the Ace hits villains range more than ours so I don't like bluffing this particular card at all.

Yeah, I made a mistake the first time around, the turn is different this time.

Interesting observations, thanks. For me 15bbs is a little too much to jam pre, even 4 handed in BB vs BTN. GTO looks like this:

So jamming some of the time is certainly approved in any case.

Personally, I don't donk any flops, even those that are good for my BB defending range. I know it's okay to do so some of the time, but for me the issue is that it shrinks my check-raising range and makes my checking range a little weaker. But each to their own.

I agree that this river is one on which we have to give up, as there is so much Ax in villain's check back range on the flop, and a lot of A3, A5, A6 after he calls the turn bet. So - I check-folded, and never got to find out what he had.

^^^^^ Isn't that a chip EV chart? I would think with ICM implications and the mystery bounty meaning we'll get called more often it's probably better to defend than jam pre?

As for river I would be onboard with bluffing a lot of rivers, but probably not the A.

Yes that's a good point, it's a chip EV chart. I prefer calling rather than jamming pre when there's some pretty significant payjumps - even if it gives up a small amount of EV.

Agreed that I have to give up on the river. I checked, he bet, I folded.
