There are a variety of notions of honesty.

One on end of the spectrum, there is honesty as a technicality. One in which we refrain from articulating something we know to be false while remaining silent about a known falsehood. In this situation, we are effectively being deceptive.

O the other end of the spectrum, we have authenticity. A state in which we disclose everything relevant.

As it pertains to the reaction to what the IPCC is telling us ..... the audience here is engaging in deception. Remaining silent about something which they understand to be damning.

I know that's morally no different than lying. You know it. If there is a God which concerns itself with that sort of thing, they know it too.

I don't take any solace in winning an argument. It's a pyrrhic victory at best. Despite all of your insolence, I'm rooting for you all to live. And you refuse to cooperate.

I respect people's right to choose to die. But to be complicit in choosing death for others ? For innocents ? For young people ? That doesn't sit well.

God will decide the appropriate punishment for murder. That's what this is .... plain and simple. Mass murder.

You asked me repeatedly what you could do to convince me and I told you. Go on a forum populated with the science crowd and make your case.

Are you willing to do that? Y/N

I think you're a liar John. I think you're lying to yourself.

If the published IPCC reports don't represent an adequate "forum" for you .... then what does ?

How does it feel to be the one throwing stones in the glass house of your credibility ?

Part of this exercise in expression is an experiment in seeking out resistance to an hypothesis.

I'm doing it in a relatively low risk fashion .... relatively anonymously, in a lightly populated corner of the internet.

It's a preparation for going public.

Dear Forum Members,Over in the poker threads, they have members who blog about their poker experience. I've been wanting to write a book but haven't been able to get over the hump just writing in private. I need the feedback and interaction so I'm inviting you to read and interact. I'm personally quite fond of the TV series Game of Thrones, so I would like to occasionally throw

Just a refresher from my original post to start this thread.

This is from the IPCC. Anyone think we're getting anywhere near that 2C line ?

I'm not the only one who believes in God.

There are a group of people who believe in concepts like rapture. A concept whereby the Earth habitability must be destroyed as a precursor to human ascension to heaven.

It's crazy to contemplate ..... but they are getting their way. They are in the process of conducting that experiment. That's the only logical explanation for Trumpism that I can muster. A madman who is hellbent on destroying life on Earth.

This post from Stepfan Rahmsdorf came across feed today.

He's at the forefront of research related to a slowing AMOC. In this letter, he's sharing an analysis of the models which claim relevance on the matter.

The "cold blob" in the N. Atlantic is the clearest signal available to a layperson of the slowing AMOC

On geologic timescales, AMOC shutdowns are regular events. In timescales of human civilization, they are unprecedented.

The last AMOC shutdown was 13,000 years ago during the intensity of the transition from the last ice to a warm period.

In case anyone is wondering ..... what is the AMOC ?

It stands for Atlantic Meridoneal Overturning Circulation.

It's an ocean current which operates on a density gradient and is responsible for bringing tropical warmth to the N Atlantic region.

If you've ever been in a cold snowy location and opened the door to a heated home, you can feel a blast of wind as the hot and cold air masses rush to find their way to equilibrium. That's the way AMOC works ..... pushing warm air toward a cold place on the surface ..... while cold water moves toward a warmer south on the ocean floor.

As the water commences its journey from the south .... it begins warm and salty. As it gives off heat, the water becomes cold and salty. Cold salty water is the heaviest ocean version. When it gets heavy enough, it sinks ..... that's why it's an overturning circulation.

The water in the location where it sinks is becoming less salty. Both from Greenland ice melt and increasing rainfall as a result of a changing climate. The shrinking supply of dense water is slowing the overturning.

https://www.clivar.org/content/great-oce....

The average flow rate of the AMOC is about 18 sverdrups. One sverdrup = 1 million m3 of water per second. Contrast that with the Amazon River .... which is 0.2 sverdrups and it's a helluva lot of water and heat energy which is being transported north.

Expressions En Route To Extinction - Moses

The story of how my Hebrew name became Moses stems from my great grandfather Jacob who grew up in what was then czarist Russia the late 19th century in a region which is now part of Ukraine. He grew up in a Jewish village which was subject to pogroms and he managed to extricate himself from that somehow and made his way to London where he became an apprentice baker.

He migrated to the US around the turn of the century and became a successful bagel distributor in New York City. He apparently was successful enough that he was able to pay the cost of shipping two hundred people from his home village to the United States.

Jacob was unusual in that he was financially successful during the Great Depression and that kind of achievement provides some clout in a family system. He was a hero to my mother in her childhood and so when I was born in 1962 in Miami Beach, my great grand father requested that I be named after his grandfather, a man who had apparently been an important rabbi in his home village.

My father, whose perspectives were more aligned toward secularity and my future assimilation in American society, wasn’t keen on giving me a name which so thoroughly branded me as being Jewish. So a compromise was reached and Moses became my Hebrew name.

Like my biblical namesake, I come to you as a messenger about an uncomfortable topic. Let me be very clear from the beginning, the dark future which I imagine and foretell here is something that I am dedicated to avoiding. But there is are some forces which are apparently paralyzing humanity in its ability to recognize the need to adapt. So, perversely, I think the best way to make a difference is to explain the process by which humans are going extinct in the hopes of humanity proving me wrong.

My Relationship To God

Since the biblical Moses had an obviously important relationship with God, or Yahweh as the ancient Hebrews referred to God, I think it’s fair to disclose my own.
I believe in God, but not necessarily the judging God from scripture which is depicted to be like Santa Claus in having a keen understanding of our daily activities. My sense of God is synonymous with creation of everything. As a person who adheres to the scientific method, I believe God is revealed through scientific inquiry. I believe that God was responsible for the Big Bang, an event which explains the origin of the physical universe we all occupy. I don’t know what preceded the Big Bang and my imagination allows me to consider that the current version of the universe is equivalent to God exhaling and we can observe this via the expansion of the universe which will some day contract back in on itself in what is effectively an inhalation of God. Maybe we are just part of a repeating cycle ?

On a more personal level, I don’t hear any audible voice such as is depicted in the bible. My version of my conversation with God is my conscience. And I grasp that my conscience is a function of my experience.

As a Jewish child born in 1962 in South Florida, I was well acquainted with the horrors of the Holocaust. I encountered many adults with the green six digit tattoos forced on them during their residency at a European concentration camp under Nazi control. After the war, there was a impulse which was manifest in the slogan “Never Again”. A desire to ensure that such a tragedy would not occur again. For a young child, avoiding such a recurrence became a formed part of conscience. A Holocaust was a black and white situation, something unequivocally bad.
I’m sure that if this story gains any traction, that there will be people who try to psychoanalyze me and imply that there is something wrong with me as a means to discredit what I have to say. But there are multiple alternatives here. One is that God is speaking to me through my conscience and commanding me to tell this story in the same way that God commanded Moses to confront Pharaoh in the story of Exodus. The other is that God has nothing to do with this and my conscience is simply an arbitrary construction from my childhood environment.
In either event, the intention is the same. To encourage my species to adapt as necessary to survive.

My Understanding of You

You’re a human being just like me. And my understanding of human beings, like other animals, is that we all have a transcendent trait. We are all programmed for survival.
Sometimes we might see examples which makes us question that assumption. Self-destructive or sacrificial impulses which cause us to remove ourselves from the living.
One of the things which is essential to our survival is the sense that we are some value to our family or community. People who commit suicide are generally moved to do so because they can’t cope with the idea of being a burden to others or themselves. So my understanding of you is that you wish to be useful. I too wish to be useful and that’s why I’m telling this story. I wish for a world in which everyone feels useful and their contributions valued, including my own.

Jesus just spread the Word and moved on. He didn’t argue with people or get angry when they didn’t accept everything he said.

AOC shares her message with conviction, but she doesn’t waste time arguing with those who aren’t ready to hear it or disagree.

Blundell appears to do the same. He focuses on the work at hand, not the resistance to or critcism of his message.

None of their respective ministries would have gotten off the ground if they had done otherwise. Nor did they demand people read Summa Theologica, Das Kapital or get masters in climate science. That's for the converted and believers to defend their beliefs.

There is a world of difference between getting angry at people and getting angry over their actions, religion or not.

I dont know that I agree. im not saying this is wrong I just don’t know that I agree. I think the virality of Jesus was a seemingly unique juxtaposition of his rabbinal jewish upbringing and his entirely laid back, misaligned, but genuine interpretation of those laws. I think his personal instincts that made him an anti-slut shamer are the same instincts that made him go viral.

Are you referring to Jem Bendell ? I'm not familiar with any Blundell's ...

Jesus was a radical and a revolutionary. He sought to upend the status quo and the establishment murdered him.

That's why this is scary. I have no desire to be a martyr.

Yeah, the Deep Adaptation author, sorry.

by John21

Yeah, the Deep Adaptation author, sorry.

Here's some contrast between Mann and Bendell which is alluded to in this article. I will share some highlighted excerpts. The bolded section suggests that Bendell is actually much more mainstream within the scientific community than Mann is. But Bendell isn't the one getting brought in to speak and debate with corporate media anchors. Corporate media wants the more benign views that Mann and Hayhoe peddle or the denier views that people like Judith Curry peddle.

Bendell and Rupert Read then published the anthology Deep Adaptation: Navigating the Realities of Climate Chaos in 2021. Leading climatologist and planetary boundaries expert Professor Will Steffen commented on the book as follows: “Collapse followed by transformation is a common way that complex systems evolve. Perhaps collapse of our high consumption, climate-destabilising society can lead to transformation towards a brighter human future. The Deep Adaptation framework outlined in this book is a helpful way to seek that transformation.” However, another leading climate change expert, Michael Mann, stated that Bendell’s conclusions were “ wrong on the science and impacts: There is no credible evidence that we face ‘inevitable near-term collapse.’” For Mann, Bendell’s conclusions could jeopardise the fight to mitigate greenhouse gases.

Responding to criticism from Michael Mann and others, Bendell stated in an interview titled The Darkest Timeline which was published in The New York Times, “My own conclusion that it is too late to prevent a breakdown in modern civilization in most countries within our lifetimes is not purely based on an assessment of climate science. It’s based on my view of society, politics, economics from having worked on probably 25 countries across five continents, worked in the intergovernmental sector of the U.N., been part of the World Economic Forum, working in senior management in environmental groups, being on boards of investment funds.”

Last May, The Guardian surveyed 380 climate scientists about their strongest guesses about what temperature increases would look like by the end of this century, and 77% of them said there would be at least a 2.5 degree Celsius increase, or 1 degree above the safe threshold recommended by the IPCC.

All you're doing with this book project is trying to smuggle your doomer-mongering into legitimate science.

I want to return to this accusation and give you an opportunity to reconsider it in light of the evidence which has been presented to you since you're originally wrote it.

I have zero interest in engaging with you on this topic. I was just giving you some advice on how not to go insane.

This thread is a cautionary tale.

Something I wrote recently:

The promise of the father to the child is the foundation of the kingdom and the foundation of life.

Hell is not the unquenchable fire.

Hell is the life of the seeker who denies this foundation.

It’s the life of the restless wanderer who continues to deny the father and his promise in exchange for low level survival in a Darwinian world.

Hell is becoming a slave to the survival instinct in a fallen world.

Jesus was influential because people around him said to themselves, “I want what he has.”

He embodied the fullness of life.
