First off blaming climate scientists for messaging or scientists at energy companies for being cowards is terrible thinking. Climate scientists do science not messaging. We have many debates on various issues under insane pretexts because neither side in “debates” listened to or understood the actual science, particularly in lgbtq debates. Public debates on issues have very little to do with the actual truth of those issues. Scientists at energy companies are vast in number and do more sophisticated work than anything being done in silicon valley.

We're on pace to reach 2.0C by 2050, which they said would be catastrophic.

It doesn't matter that governments ought to be doing something but aren't. I'm not saying it's their fault but they can decide to stop enabling the production of GHGs. It's the only option. So they can quit and go work in the mall or wherever.

Yes, but seriously that’s the type of conclusion you might reach if you didn’t have the information I have. To be clear climate change is real, we are warming the planet, and the consequences will be enormous. But world ending, no. Sea levels will rise, millions will be displaced, there will be more storms, but thats far from the end of the world. We have much more dangerous and immediate issues than the very serious issue of climate change.

Curbing emissions isn’t something we can just flip a switch and do because society at large including many countries and parties all around the world have energy needs. You cant wave a wand and say everyone stop having energy needs. Super Alarmist rhetoricwithout solutions is causing disinvestment in projects that are saving the world. Climate scientists and scientists involved in energy sectors are saving the world. Dont assist far right media in dismissing them.

I basically agree with your climate prognosis. But it was the overhyped, alarmist rhetoric coming out of the scientific community that led to the Super Alarmist rhetoric.

And no, I wasn’t serious about starting an anti-science campaign or calling scientists cowards. Instead, more along the lines of addressing the kind of analysis paralysis and skepticism that’s grown up around the issue, basically, we can do something and why risk ruin, respectively.

I have added a number of thoughts with lots of value but you don’t recognize that because you’re drunk off boomer privilege. Which to your credit you’ve acknowledged. It’s not suprising you wouldn’t even entertain the possibility of discussing the intersectional issues involved in climate change, your reads are so heteronormative they make me want to barf.

I don't give a f*** about anyone's gender or sexuality other than a,wish that consenting adults be free to practice whatever they want in the privacy of their personal space. Orgasms are generally healthy ... whatever it takes someone to get their fair share is their business, not mine.

Gender and sexuality get far too much attention in the public sphere. That makes me want to barf.

Climate change is a foundation of chronic factors which lead to a greater likelihood of extremely damaging events. What is transpiring in the Caribbean at the moment with hurricane Melissa has the potential to bring Jamaica to its knees as well as inflicting considerable damage to neighboring nations.

The chronic factors ....

1) a warmer ocean which provides a fuel source for storms
2) a warmer atmosphere which holds more moisture
3) elevated sea level which amplifies storm surge
4) weakened jet stream which gets stuck in place and makes storms more likely to remain relatively stationary

All of this is coming together with Jamaica's mountainous topography to create essentially a perfectly storm ...

Jamaica has no experience with a cat 5 landfall in its national history. It has no experience with a storm approaching from the south which will maximize surge into its southern ports. It has no experience with a meter of rainfall rolling down those mountains. It will deliver a tidal wave of mud, debris and water toward the low areas.

Human infrastructure was engineered over millennia in order to withstand the rigors of a previous version of the planet. It was not designed with the version we are creating. We have no acquaintance with the level of soil saturation that these storms can deliver and how they undermine the hillsides we had imagined to be permanent. This will be similar to the havoc that Hurricane Helene wrought on western N. Carolina last year when entire towns were demolished.

The pattern isn’t that you’re “above” gender or sexuality.
It’s that whenever the discussion requires complexity beyond storm mechanics, anything about human impact, power, or inequality, you switch from argument to dismissal.

That isn’t neutrality.
It’s emotional avoidance packaged as objectivity.

You say you don’t care what people do in private, yet the moment someone notes that climate risk isn’t evenly distributed, because of class, gender roles, infrastructure, or social vulnerability, you declare the whole line of inquiry illegitimate.

That is the definition of privilege: assuming that if something doesn’t touch you, it doesn’t belong in the analysis.

No one is asking you to pledge allegiance to “identity politics.”
But if you want to talk credibly about global crises, it’s basic intellectual honesty to include who is most exposed, who rebuilds, who migrates, and who gets left behind. That’s not ideology; it’s logistics.

Disagreement is fine.
What isn’t fine is shutting down every invitation to deeper analysis. At some point it stops reading as skepticism and starts reading as insecurity.

The readers here can see the difference.

You have ignored all my non gendered related posts in a weird way.

Curbing emissions isn’t something we can just flip a switch and do because society at large including many countries and parties all around the world have energy needs.

The most fundamental energy needs we have are supplied by carbohydrates, fats and proteins in our diet. All of these are derived from growing plants which we eat directly or pass through an animal medium such as a cow or a chicken.

When we change the climate so dramatically that we shrink the pool of calories available, those other energy uses become secondary.

The things which you imply as needs are not truly needs. We don't need bitcoin. We don't need AI. We don't need 5k sf homes for 2 people. We don't need international recreational aviation. We can survive without them.

We need food, shelter and a stable cooperative society where people are not desperate and at each others throats. Everything else is a luxury.

In order for our species to survive, we need people who can reproduce. We don't need homosexuals. They don't serve any evolutionary purpose unless they are participating in the process of improving the prospects of future generations. Heteronormative is normal because it's linked to the survival of our species.

Hitler specifically said that Jews don't serve any biological purpose towards the survival of a nation.

I'm curious where you'd rank homosexuals compared to the olds and the weak that you spoke of before when looking where to trim some fat on your New World, but I'll leave you with this.

...Preventing tyranny involves understanding that once you justify excluding one group, it becomes easy to justify excluding another. Every time a society decides some people “don’t matter,” it plants the same seed that’s destroyed countless civilizations before it. - ill even stir the pot and extra turn and say that some in the democratic party have done just this that has cost them the election.

You're very high on the tyrannical meter already, you're just trying to justify the need for it without acknowledging the dangers of it.

There's probably a reason why all the socialist experiments collapse into dictatorships or totalitarian regimes.

.

I'm not Hitler. I don't discriminate based upon religious or sexual orientation. I don't call for punishment of people unless their behavior impairs the ability of others to do what they need to be happy and survive.

Just stating a plain biological fact that babies come from heterosexual intercourse.

I don't have any objection to homosexuality. It's probably better for the world at large to have fewer babies at this point. I certainly wouldn't want to punish them in any way. But don't ask me to find that issue to be something worthy of a lot of my time and attention. We're en route to an extinction event .... we have bigger fish to fry.

That’s why I like asking a few questions in these commie threads, especially when we were debating on whether making Nut Nut king of the world.

I was opening up to getting rid of my pickup and my Bayliner but now we don't need homosexuals either.

And why is the capitalist experiment in the US currently collapsing into a totalitarian regime ?

Why is China rising under a totalitarian regime ?

Enough with the myopic one-sided labeling John. Be fair minded about all of this.

Like homosexuals impairing others to survive? The bolded is a pretty loose term for you to work with, captain.

by Nut Nut

And why is the capitalist experiment in the US currently collapsing into a totalitarian regime ?

Hardly. We have far too many wealthy and powerful people for that to happen. That's the firewall that's been working since the Magna Carta.

Why is China rising under a totalitarian regime ?

Well they surely didn't pull themselves up by their bootstraps like the indusrialized West. The West gave them access to its markets and now capitalism owns them.

by formula72

I have never implied anything negative about homosexuals or their impairing the lives of others. I simply don't find the topic worthy of my time.

I am anti-tribal as it pertains to the subdivision of humans into separate categories. I am interested in issues which impact the human tribe as a whole. The habitability of the planet is such an issue. For me, everything else is a selfish distraction.

Loss of planetary habitability will impact all demographics. Extinction kills everyone. It presents an opportunity for us to come together without having to make claims about one demographic or another being more acutely impacted than others.

In my opinion, tribalism is the name of the disease which is at the epicenter of humanity's spiral toward extinction. I see someone like Bryce and his constantly trying to steer the conversation in a manner which emphasizes their tribal identity and I see it as a manifestation of a disease. They can do what they want .... it doesn't trouble me that people have different preferences. But those preferences are an irrelevant distraction and subdivision relating to a universal topic.

There is only one inhabitable planet for us. It has a globally contiguous atmosphere which is not subdivided among different tribes. We all share it and all of our destinies are tied to its chemical composition.

The people who eventually come together to solve the problem will be those who can get beyond "ME" and immerse themselves in "US".

If we go extinct and a future intelligent species exhumes our fossil record .... the record will reveal a species which died out because the members were all self-absorbed and incapable of cooperation.

We have a totalitarian regime with the wealthy and powerful as the totalitarians.

And the west didn't pull itself up by its bootstraps. They had ships and guns and colonized the world through force and brutality.

Tomorrow we get to observe an example of the plagues that God is going to deliver to remind us that there is something bigger than ourselves.

Jamaica is going to have a catastrophic flooding event and an estimated 50,000 people will be displaced. We hope that the fatalities won't be too great but that's not something we can control from a distance.

This is going to be fresh carnage for the oligarchs to consider when then convene in Brazil for COP 30 in a few weeks. The cowards are scheduling these global climate gatherings in remote places and authoritarian strongholds like Azerbaijan and the United Arab Emirates so they don't have to deal with the fury of masses of angry and desperate protesters.

Things are coming to a boiling point ..... the financial system is creaking under the understanding that a great deal of global real estate is losing its financial fundamentals. The crash is coming and the oligarchs are getting behind Trump and company and their willingness to impose martial law.

Comparing current rate of warming to past mass extinction events. Humans are more effective at ruining the habitability of life on the planet than other natural forces.

The stories of the damage to crops and fishing infrastructure in a region where 10 million people are already considered food insecure in Jamaica, Hiati, the DR and Cuba.

Melissa was the 3rd most powerful hurricane in Atlantic Basin history with a minimum central pressure of 892 mb. The highest gusts ever recorded in a hurricane at 252 MPH were recorded in Jamaica while sustained winds were measure at 180 MPH.

Meanwhile in NYC, they received 1.85 inches of rain in a TEN MINUTES !!!. This is a manifestation of a fundamentally altered hydrological cycle. For each degree Celsius that the atmosphere warms, it increases its capacity to hold water by 7%. The atmosphere is becoming like a vacuum cleaner, sucking up water out of the ground which leads to drought and the eventual rainfall comes down in ever greater deluges.

The net amount of water being absorbed and later precipitated is the same, but the intensity of the back and forth is not something humans have historically been acquainted with. Think of it like the environment of 100 years ago was just right .... like in Goldilocks. Not too much evaporation or precipitations ..... a more gentle back and forth. Human infrastucture was built with engineering tolerances that suited an old version of Earth. The new version of Earth is going to overwhelm out historical infrastructure.

Some days the craziness of the world seems overwhelming.

We need a modern version of FDR with a message that says there is nothing to fear except fear itself. A message that says we got this under control and we're going to make sure that no one gets neglected.

We need to pivot away from a message which promotes fear and polarization. Away from tribalism to one of collective unity.

Our fates are all intertwined. The illusion that we can hoard our way to personal safety needs to be dispelled.

During the McCarthy era, it eventually came to an end when someone had the nerve to confront him in public. The madness of being willing to allow SNAP benefits to expire seems like the moment in which we can confront the madness of Project 2025.

Survival of the fittest means having the intelligence to understand that we need to cooperate in order to survive. A society which is only good at making rich people richer is unsustainable.
