Poker Players who went insane and/or succumbed to serious drug issues

They all seem to share a high IQ, sometimes well-educated, sometimes not

Stu Unger: Drug addiction,
Vanessa Selbst: Curre

We might need a bigger sample size. Also, how many non-poker players post delusional, conspiracy stuff on X? Any other areas standing out outside of gambling? The drug usage might be related to the money itself + highly stressful profession. I think it is fairly well established that drug usage was/is a big think on Wall Street for example.

Nah, I've been a part of both cohorts.

Gambling is uniquely problematic and whether it's the chicken or the egg, the chicken makes things worse.

Someone as educated and compensated as Selbst is careening towards delusion. I suspect that seed of impulsivity led to poker rather than resulted from it. Same for all the other great players who succumb.

Even the stoic Chip Reese died from drug use despite having a stable family and nest egg.

I'm glad I don't need to prey off others in poker anymore.. Years ago I played with someone who couldn't afford the table stakes, I won several pots against them and he then committed suicide that night.

The correlation is real and many of the remaining professional poker players are deeply depressed and trying to escape.

Questionable source.

According to one tongue-in-cheek YouTube commenter, “They used more cocaine during bathroom breaks than at a cartel boss’s 40th birthday party.”

Dwan needs to pay his debts already. Why is everyone kissing this guys butt? No excuses already he needs to pay Jungleman and whoever else he owes. A gambler who doesn't pay his debts has no integrity, which through all these years on this forum I have come to realize that poker players are terrible human beings.

I have come to realize that poker players are terrible human beings.

Get lost! Distribution of suckers and good guys is the same as in any other environment. I have worked with Poker-players professionally for the last 15 years, got scammed sometimes but the vast majority is correct like in the real world. Like in real-world, if someone wants to borrow money from you, be prepared to never ever see it again. Who needs to borrow private isn't good for any money at banks. If banks decided that this bloke is no good, why should you think so?!

I’d add kevmode to the list based on all his posts here I’ve read

LOL People playing the victim and blaming drugs/alcohol. Many of us don't do either, it's a choice.

LOL People playing the victim and blaming drugs/alcohol. Many of us don't do either, it's a choice.

I hate people not taking own responsibility and blaming everything instead of looking harshly at themselves
But of course for many people drugs & alcohol arent exactly choices but an addiction
If you are so unfamiliar with addiction count yourself an extremely lucky human being

Lucky? Like someone said once, the harder I work the luckier I get. Hate is a strong word, disappointed and disgusted may be more accurate.

Many of us have had our brushes with substance abuse or know someone close, some realized it is a bad path that destroys people and families and chose to quit, some don't and go the full Stu Unger route. They prefer the fantasy world of being high over the reality of a life they have built.

Mills Lane, the prominent boxing referee in the Tyson/Holyfield fight, was also a judge in Reno, NV said it best. He told people that came before him in court '...you don't have an alcohol/drug problem, you have a YOU problem, own it, get help and fix it, or stay in jail...'

He was a champion boxer in the Marine Corp. and then went on to graduate college then law school.

Probably could have been an addict but chose not to be.

I played poker with Judge Lane at the MGM the night of the Tyson - Peter McNeeley fight. (He was going to ref the fight.) He stood up to leave for work, but said he'd "be back soon".

(Probably my favorite poker quote of all time, especially in context.)

Chip Reece died in the days following weight loss surgery.

by Tuma

Chip Reece died in the days following weight loss surgery.

So food addiction. Pretty much everyone in the world has addictions and it's a small % of people that partake in multiple addictions responsibly/in moderation

Whether it be drugs/alcohol, food, sex/porn, TV/internet/video games. Obv not all addictions are created equal in terms of how detrimental they are. Even work or exercise can be an addiction that people push to a degree that hurts the overall life they say they want

Regardless in almost all cases it's not just "those people over there" but everyone who's posted in this thread so far and will post after this

Chip died from either pneumonia or the effects of gastric bypass surgery. The former was from his family who were with him at home when it happened, the latter was speculation from Doyle & Barry Greenstein.

Chip definitely partied hearty in the ‘70s heyday of the Gold Dust Twins, but he cleaned up and found the Lord decades before his poker partner and childhood friend Danny Robison did.

Chip’s son Casey died at 20 in 2009 from Rx drugs.

All of this is common knowledge, and pops up on the front page of any search results.

Nutsinho w/ prescription drugs too :(
Super smart and extremely well liked kid

me 😉

I will fly someday

Gavin Smith, Chad Batista

Gavin Smith? I mean it’s known he drank a lot in his day, but did he die from drugs?

omg that is great lol

That Chad kid was a really strong player I remember him back in the day. He was such a strong player because he played with no fear and had strong reads. Addiction is tough for people sadly and when you are in that stage the drug takes over sadly.

If you think about what poker entails especially online grinding which is making huge amounts of decisions in a relatively short timeframe coupled with the emotional highs and lows …that’s just not what the human brain is engineered for and likely extremely unhealthy for nearly all people.

I believe leatherass came to this conclusion after analysing his condition(s) with medical / brain experts ?
