Being Overweight and Good at Poker

So everyone knows that being overweight correlates to lack of impulse control, making good decisions, etc... however this seems to be allowed in the world of poker. Wheras in most professional situations, overweight folks are far less likely to get promoted, win sales or even land any job.

Would love to hear from folks like Limon, or others, who think that they can buck this trend and/or exploit this assumption at the poker table as poker may be one of the few realms left in the world where tis holds true. Or doesn't.

Fair amount of assumptions here that are probably off base. For most, it’s more of a compulsion than impulse. Distinct difference between the two.

More importantly, I’m not sure what you’re asking or stating other than there are a lot of overweight poker players.

You hope Limon can prove what wrong?

Most Americans are overweight. I haven't noticed this to be more prevalent among poker players than the general population.

Even if it were true, I wouldn't expect this to be a disadvantage in poker. Overweight people are much more disadvantaged due to perceptions about their abilities than due to their actual abilities, especially intellectual ones. Poker is pretty close to a pure meritocracy, and players might actually benefit from others underestimating their abilities.

Physical ability is like the smallest thing in poker. Maybe bad shape gives you slight -ev in long overnighter session, but thats about it.

As long as you don’t leap to your feet, run around knocking over chairs and screaming β€œwassup” at a guy you think slowrolled you, you should be fine.

A lot of poker players are not necessarily overweight but of course the larger successful players stick out (no pun intended). Being overweight simply can not help. There is no upside. While being in shape might not help, but there are plenty of upsides. Better stamina, more energy, longer focus, etc. And of course, usually a longer life. There really isn't any downsides to being minimally in shape and eating a decent diet besides having to work out for 50 minutes to an hour and having to find a decent meal when you are traveling or out.

Being overweight has nothing to do with being good at poker. Poker is about mental skill, discipline, and decision-making, not physical appearance, though good health can help with focus and stamina.

There's evidence to suggest that better physical fitness is a benefit in esports so there could be a correlation to poker playing.

How much does being healthy help your game I am overweight and it seems like every well known pro looks like they're a healthy weight. I'm guessing that being a good weight improves focus as you have more energy to concentrate... Basically, are professionals "Very," health conscious Tyvm.

I think its been a general movement for anyone involved in a mentally taxing field. Your brain and body just need real energy and the right nutrition to function at its best performance. There is almost no downside to getting healthy and fit as long as you don't overdo it when you start. You will be able to focus more, regulate your emotions better, and simply be able to play high level poker longer. It's an hour a day plus a shower, you don't have to train like you are going to be in the next super hero film. Just run, eat generally healthy and lift some weights or at least sit ups and push ups. Always stretch.

Its just like the game of poker, by doing the least bad things you can, you end up doing very well.

Donald Trump is overweight and is President of the United states not once but twice elected.

However he says he has never drinked.

Correlation doesn't mean causality. There is a correlation between overweight and lazyness but you could be either without the other. Therefore, one does not necessarily cause the other.
