Mini Walrus - Reveal tbd by eyebooger
This weekend!
what is the deadline for entries
Entries closed
I'm glad that you're doing a walrus, and happy that I was part of the inspiration in making this happen.
If I can think of some good songs I'll probably join.
My point was that when you went months between revealing categories, Nich wasn't poking the thread with "bumps."
Still room for you if you want to turbo an entry.
I donβt see a PM from you.
If you’ve sent in songs but don’t see your name, let me know.
Players:
xander biscuits
filthyvermin
Doctor Zeus
JMurder3
eyebooger
DonkDonkDonkDonk
rickroll

ArcticKnight
That list seems to br chronological.
I get filthy has won and DZ has a hairy chest. Prospects for me not looking so good.
Doing another listen through of submissions for #1 and then will start crushing dreams.

As contractually obligated, we’ll save the top and bottom three for the end.
In 6th place scoring 4 points:
This is a great record. Unfortunately, it's barely audible in a 0:35 movie clip. The theme fits, I just wish it was more prominent. A movie I've never seen, but a soundtrack that's filled with tasty treats.

JMurder3 submits:
Mack 10 - Take a Hit (Friday)
In 4th place scoring 5.5 points:
I straight hated this on first listen. But it definitely grew on me. Both story-wise and lyrically, it's one of the better fits with the scene. It was submitted by two of you, so I'm docking a little bit of originality points. But still, a decent submission. Also, what a film. One of the ones I'm glad to have seen once but will likely never watch again.
Spoiler
eyebooger & rickroll submit:
Underworld - Born Slippy .NUXX (Trainspotting)
Huh. Didn't expect to match somebody in this category.
In 7th place scoring 3 points:
I've never seen this film. The music in this scene is super well known and certainly fits the vibe nicely. My distraction is from knowing this song as well as I do and not recognizing it as fitting what's being portrayed in the scene. It's definitely a cool scene, but there's a disconnect for me with the music.
Spoiler
filthyvermin submits:
Carl Orff - O Fortuna (Excalibur)
To be fair to the 7 players who didn't submit that, Rick and I should probably get 5.5 points and not 6.
In 3rd place scoring 8 points:
This director is known as one of the best in the business when it comes to soundtrack pairings with scenes. And this is probably one of their most famous examples. Something about the song is so melancholic and it is a perfect fit with what we're seeing. The timing of everything is lined up exactly, and it provides an incredible effect.

amplify submits:
Derek and the Dominos - Layla (Piano Exit) (Goodfellas)
In 8th place scoring 2 points:
A great song for sure (Dominic Miller ftw), and the one I've had stuck in my head the most since I started listening through entries. My struggle here is that it's not really much of a category fit. Sure, it technically starts during the final scene, but it plays the scene out and then runs during the credits. That knocked it down a lot.

xander biscuits submits:
Sting - Shape of My Heart (LΓ©on: The Professional)
If you want to learn more about the song, check out Paul Davids' incredible breakdown of the guitar part and Dominic Miller's interview with Rick Beato. Some serious genius on display, and Rick.
In 2nd place scoring 10 points:
Another director who is known for the influence music has on their scenes - often building entire scenes around a song, as in this example. This is probably one of the most famous examples of a scene changing a song forever. I doubt there are many people who have seen this film who don't think of this scene immediately when they hear this song in any other context. A bit of a Halleluiah, but oh well. This is also one of only two songs submitted that is actually source rather than soundtrack. That gives it a bump for me as it's entirely linked to the scene, rather than just a nice soundtrack choice.
Spoiler
ArcticKnight submits:
Stealers Wheel - Stuck in the Middle With You (Reservoir Dogs)
In 9th place scoring 1 point:
I've never heard of this movie. It was an interesting enough montage, but I was fairly lost without the context. The song starts the scene nicely. It begins to lose me once the action kicks in, but it picks back up once the chorus hits. It's fine, but I'd probably be okay with never hearing it again.
Spoiler
DonkDonkDonkDonk submits:
King Princess - Pain (Bottoms)
In 1st place scoring 12 points:
I am shocked where this ultimately landed, but here we are. My first listen I almost shut it off about 10 seconds in and insta-last placed it. Then I realized I had clicked on the official music video instead of the movie scene. It's much better in the context of the scene and grew on me more than any other submission. I've never seen (or heard of) this movie, but I really like the scene that was submitted. The camera work is great, and the music is a solid companion.

Doctor Zeus submits:
Perfume Genius - Slip Away (Booksmart)
