Whale does Vegas - 2025 birthday-ish edition (23rd Nov - 2nd Dec)
Hello everyone,
Starting this thread unusually early, since I am a bit over-excited. It is once again time to travel back
I've got one question. Why is describing someone's ethnic background pertinent to describing a poker hand? Why not just stick to seat assignments? I mean if I was doing a hand history it seems like it sure would get repetitive having to mention a Caucasians race every time I got in a hand with one.
because as people have stated and is usually accurate: a young Asian male almost always plays a different style than an old white man. European males almost always play a different style than young American females. people are just telling a story. and players look different. ever read a novel? writers describe their character's mate's looks and background.
What Langdon said. Also, quit being a WLB and looking for reasons to be offended. There are actual, legitimate reasons to call out racism/sexism/etc.
By whining when someone accurately describes their opponent, you're diluting the times when someone calls out an actual problem.

What style do "white American males" play?
Stop feeding him.
since white American males make up the majority of the Vegas poker population it would be prudent to add additional descripters.
there are already many; including OMC, hoodie/shades/headphones guy, cowboy, young pro grinder with a rack of backup chips on standby, tourist rec, etc.
and they all have different style
[QUOTE=thedude404;57160683]OK I was debating even posting this because I thought wow this is seriously embarrassing even asking this question. But the more I thought about it I decided to just go ahead and ask because this is the first time I've sat down at a live 1/2 game in 2 years so I am pretty rusty and need all the help I can get.
Table is 6 handed playing 1/2 but the drunk maniac has been briefly called away from table so for this particular hand we are 5 handed. Action with drunk maniac has been pretty furious with several hands being all in bets for stacks preflop. SB is semi-competent player who has just won at least 2 of these recent preflop all-ins , BB tight nit. UTG is new sober player. UTG+1 is competent player, probably a Vegas reg young Asian kid late 20's most competent at table since I've been sitting there for about 1.5 hours ie more competent than myself. I'm on button. I have $300 behind up $100 on session and am covered by UTG+1 and UTG also has $300.
Congratulations thedude404 for killing an excellent poster and one of the few who still entertain us with live trip reports.
When you wanted feedback in a hand you posted, why did you think it was necessary to include the villain was a ( see bolded, your words ) was probably a Vegas reg young Asian kid late 20s? You racist mfer.
BTW are you still homeless and taking out your frustrations out on everyone else to make you feel better about yourself?
I might be done with this. I've tried to keep it together at a poker table but there are so many pieces of **** in humanity its not worth it.First off...the dumb midwestern white that cant understand anyone other than them selves. They continually denigrate the wait staff along with anyone that doesnt look like them while being total pieces of ****. **** it i grew up in the
.
Wow. Favourite comment from that thread:
“Guy without permanent home comes to Vegas with 7k and a tennis racket bag of clothes, says will be there weeks but seemingly has a nervous breakdown on night one - seems about right.”
And here I was defending myself [emoji23]
ah yes I remember that crazy racist rant
person obsessed with race is the true racist.....weird.

Please don't refer to me as a Caucasian. My ancestors are from Ireland and England. None, as far as I know, are from the Caucasus region.
Plus, just because I'm over 60, and start each cash session with a cup of coffee, this doesn't make me an OMC. Calling me such might mean that YOU are a caffeineist.
Whale, thanks for yet another in your long line of entertaining and informative TRs in LVL. As others have previously said, the way you lay out your thought process in the hands in which you are involved is extremely beneficial, and hopefully serves to make me a better poker player. Best wishes.

This. Although I mostly play PLO (or dealers choice), I really enjoy reading these trip reports.

I win. Have a great day!

Yes exactly white Americans have different styles while everyone else with brown skin is pidgeonholed into a certain playing style. I think you just solved poker!
Thanks for the positive comments everyone
I know I have blasted the conclusion of this TR, but there is a reason for it. I will make a final long update on Monday with my thoughts.
Time to wrap up this thread as I am back in Malta etc. and have been sleeping a bit on the conclusions. This might be a bit all over the place, so bear with me.
First of all, I'm not even going to bother commenting much on the comment regarding race descriptions etc. All I will say is that people in most European countries have a lot of reason to actually be racist, so if I really wanted to I could post so-called 'racist' comment. But this is not the time and place for it, and when I play poker the topic of race or religion etc. is nowhere on my mind.
The only thing I am using race for is to stereotype before I know more about a player, and I also think it adds more to the trip report by getting occasional description of the players involved. But as I briefly stated earlier, I could be better at informing that an opponent is white - such as using acronyms like MAWG (Middle-aged white guy) and similar. I guess with myself being white it's just easier for me to notice non-white players. But that doesn't make anyone a racist, it's just natural.
Stereotypes might not always be correct as well; one evening at Bellagio I was playing with a young Asian who I assumed would be aggressive. But instead he just turned out to be a calling station who limped a lot and didn't seem sophisticated with live poker at all. So looks can definitely be deceiving.
---
With that said, let's move over to Vegas instead. I actually still haven't re-read my own report, and usually I like to do that before commenting on my own play. But my overall feeling is that I played pretty decent, with some exceptions, and as always I managed to grind out a profit around $20-$30 USD an hour in Cash Games. Should have been way more obviously, but if nothing else I guess I am reasonably consistent.
But Las Vegas was as always amazing, exhilarating, exhausting and fascinating, to the point where I really wished I could have stayed longer than I did. Maybe I could have tried out a new hotel, or won a couple of hundred more in poker, or maybe even a Buffalo handpay, or had more dates with a beautiful woman many years younger than me. If only.. 😀
Here are some random pictures btw:

I really wanted to try these ones btw (Zoox driverless cars), but the app is only possible to download for Americans. There is probably some way around it, but I am not tech savvy enough to figure out how:

Anyway, let's do some random thoughts about hotels, poker and other stuff:
- I started the trip with 3 nights at Horseshoe, which I as always enjoyed. The room was a bit dirty when I checked in, and that was a disappointment. But that got taken care of the next day when they cleaned, and overall I love the location and the big rooms they have there. It's also very easy to get a Sphere-view, which is a big plus 😀
- I then moved over to Bellagio for the last 6 nights, and the room was great, spacious and stylish. The hotel also had a very decent gym, and the casino floor had more good VP-options than I originally thought. I like the Bellagio, although I don't know if I am a 'Bellagio-person'. It's insanely crowded at times, but the location is really good and everything looks pristine and of good quality.
- The poker games was for the most part very good. I will say the lesser desirable tables I had was (twice) at Aria, but it's probably partly my own fault for playing in the middle of the day instead of showing up at 10pm. There was also some grinders at times at Bellagio, but as long as I am only playing $1/$3 and similar no game will be unbeatable for me. Thanksgiving weekend was really busy, and overall there was just a day or two in the beginning of the trip where it felt a bit 'dead' with number of tables running.
- As always I chickened out of some $2/$5. I should play it more just to get used to the differences, but there aren't a ton of great $2/$5 games I assume, at least outside of the Bellagio one with restricted cap. But I should at least play more $2/$3, which I did one evening at South Point. I should also jump into some more $2/$3 at Venetian when I am there, and more $2/$5 games at Bellagio.
- I love Vegas but it's exhausting. I didn't get enough sleep most days, and even though I didn't play as many hours as I had planned I still didn't find time to do all I wanted. I never made it over to Wynn, I didn't make it to Resorts World etc. When you feel crunched for time it's too easy to just find a nearby close option to you, instead of Ubering over to Wynn when you see that $1/$3 have 25 people on the list or similar.
- The reason for not playing enough hours is what I touched on earlier in the thread; I actually got a match through the dating app Bumble with a young woman I realistically should have no chance on charming. But we hit it off really well and met each other quite often when I was in Vegas, which was obviously very exciting and a very unusual experience for me these days. That in turn lead to fewer hours of poker, but that is whatever. Poker will always be there, but opportunites like above will not. Whether something actually comes out of it remains to be seen, even though I travel often to Vegas. But I know from experience it's hard to stay in touch with people who are not in your nearby 'bubble' when returning to real life. But as I am a fairly private person, that's all you guys get from me regarding this experience.
- Minus-EV gambling actually went reasonable for me this time around. I am very certain that I won a few hundred on Caesars while staying at Horseshoe, and for MGM properties I was only down around $400 or so when all was said and done. And while my volume (wagering) is never as big as I plan it to be, I should at still be able to keep my normal offers if nothing else.
But all the above have just made me even more excited for my next Vegas-trip, which I think will be fairly early next year. If that means January, February or March remains to be seen, but it won't be long regardless. As always these TRs eats up too much of my time, thus I am constantly thinking of doing a 'leon' and rather post retroactively when I get home. But I say that every time and still end up doing live reports, so who knows what the future holds.
The worst day in Vegas is always leaving, and even though I have 15+ trips under my belt now (probaby closer to 20) it never gets easier. But eventually we have no choice but to see the below sign in the departure terminal at Harry Reid Airport.
Thanks again everyone for following along, and I am sorry I don't always find time to reply to all the comments. But until next time Vegas:
