I know I'm dumb but I consider farming and food production as part of national security. I'm all for subsidizing crops for domestic consumption to stay competitive vs cheaper imports, you don't want your food supply reliant on imports.
Subsidies for soybeans meant to be exported I'm less sympathetic.
Right, because you rely on a seller who may not like you, raise prices or go bankrupt themselves, and they you're relying on them to be reliant to who they are relying on.
It would be better to keep the farmers private, subsidize them (which is pretty much the opposite of tariffs) than it is to socialize them. It's pretty much what the Scandinavian countries do - which isn't socialism.
