Last time I checked, stocks didn't do well during the Weimar republic, in real terms. Stocks usually don't do well during inflationary periods, the "protection" they offer seems to come due to how well they perform during the growth, benign periods basically. 70s was not a good period for the economy as a whole (I wasn't alive during that time, but judging from what I read), and for hyperinflation to happen, there must be something very wrong with the economy.
Gold doesn't have any automatic protection hehe, but it performed way better in Germany during that time. Any stronger currency obviously should perform better, Argentines loved to protect themselves by having US dollars for example, during all the recurrent crisis they faced these last 25 years.
Tried one more "random" date. The day I got out of the Navy.
8/8/82
The S&P 500's total return outperformed gold by 13,541.14 percentage points (14,692.61% - 1,151.47%).
Every random "meaningful" date in my lifetime was a much better day to buy stocks rather than gold.
Gold is an insurance .
So yeah it’s normal it doesn’t outperform stocks everyday of the week .
But when u need insurance , you are damn happy to have it .
Tho u never wish to need it .
