*** Chat Quest: Never Give Up, Never December ***
I've found recently that if it is just spinning when I try to log in to 2=2 if I hit the link again it takes me to the "verifying you are human" screen. Don't know if that's always going to work but it has the last day or two.
Just got back online after being without power for five days and my shortcut to 2p2 just spun and spun. Ventured to the new site to get to ATF and got a hint on how to get to vBulletin. Glad I was able to figure that out so I wouldn't have to quit 2p2.
Fires?
I hope you and yours came out the other side ok.
Five days without power is brutal enough.
I hear Sterling Korb didn't make it.
We had a couple days recently of exceptionally high winds. Xcel turned off power in some areas (including AquaSwing's) to avoid lines going down with power, sparking, and starting wildfires.
we're currently looking at properties in Jefferson county
and we couldn't go to half the ones on our list because of the power situation
I have some school age cousins in Denver. Thought it was pretty comical that they canceled school in some places because of lolwind.
take a look at ecoflow battery banks, big sales going on right now. we got one a couple of years ago after losing power for 5 days in an ice storm.
I was surprised at school closings too. Don't have an inside info, but I assume it was places where power was out and hurricane-force winds.
I realized I wasn't clear earlier; Xcel did a preventative shut-off, not after lines had problems. Then, it took a few days to go out and make sure there wasn't damage and it was ok to turn the juice back on.
Of course, I'm down in generic suburbia, where the utilities are buried, so no worries here.

This. Xcel was more concerned with their bottom line than with their customers this past weekend. I don't mind the preventative shut down as no one wants another Marshall fire but Xcel failed miserably with the restoration issue.
Having spoken to two crews who worked on the restoration, they didn't bring in extra crews nor did they allocate any overtime for the existing crews. Both crews said there was next to no planning and no coordination between crews on the restore effort.
We started getting warnings last Monday of the wind events so there was time to get their **** together. Folks aren't pleased. One of my wife's clients is a board member of another power company and they gave us some guidance on who to contact and what to say to try to get some remediation and to have them put in more effort in the future.
Then last night there was a wildfire that caused some evacuations a few miles from us so we packed up to get out. Fortunately, they got the fire under control quickly so all is well.

My buddy up the hill took this route a couple years ago to provide battery backup to keep his fridge and other essentials running. He bought three units with an extra battery pack for each and lasted 48 hours until everything was dead.
I think I have to go the route of the portable generator and connect it to my gas line and directly into my panel. I think for just under $3k I can get something that will keep everything running indefinitely.
Maybe I'll make an empty promise to document this project in the Home ownership thread. I just spent three and a half years completely rehabbing my house and I think I've only posted about two, maybe three of the projects.

Thanks. Only big issue was the chilly nights- house was between 43 and 53 for the five days. Fortunately, it's been very mild with highs of mid 60s.
My fireplace doesn't do a great job of warming the room. It has an insert from the mid 1990s but really needs a new insert that's more efficient.
I replaced my electrical panel last year and included an outlet to power the entire panel with my generator. It's 6500w and easily runs everything in the house, including the heater since it's gas heat, plus 2 refrigerators. I doubt it would handle the AC but I imagine I'll never need it to as rare as it is for us to lose power in the summer. If we do I reckon I'll just crank up the ceiling fans, lol.
I feel really important when Cloudflare immediately identifies me as a human and doesn't even ask me to check the box to verify it!
I'm probably running at ~3.50 to 1 ratio! Almost certainly the highest around this burg!
"Human" indeed.
just had xmas dinner with an OG rounder ( spouses godfather) who says he was playing omaha split with Gwen Pham in Seattle in the 80s before it made its way to Vegas.
apparently the biggest cash game on the west coast during its time
someone named Pigeon Dave would bring a pound of coke and he said the pipe never had a chance to cool off for a couple of days which is what kept the game running.
+100K OOT Pts
When in Hawaii, spending all day Christmas Eve in the hospital and all day Christmas in the condo sucks. We are going to try to get out today, though.
I didn't know old guys ever needed to get their appendix out.
Wow, Didace. Hope the procedure went well and you're recovering nicely.
Get well soon! No surfing for at least 30 minutes after surgery, fyi. You might cramp.
I'm pretty good today, still a little sore. They gave me some good drugs but my wife is rationing them.
