Cops don’t search out of curiosity, they usually suspect something and are hoping to confirm it, not to clear you of wrongdoing. That means anything you weren’t aware of, improper storage, something belonging to someone else, or even grey areas can suddenly be interpreted against you.

There’s a YouTube channel with 3 million subscribers called Audit the Audit. Some argue it leans anti-cop, but it also gives credit where it’s due in certain situations. They do a great job of explaining First Amendment rights and pointing out where cops or civilians make mistakes - and what those mistakes can mean for you if you ever find yourself in a similar situation. In short, cops can be you worst nightmare even for outstanding citizens such as yourself - most of them aren't the friend you think they are. Many are a lot worse.

Also, I'm not here to make the argument that all cops are bad. I've got family in law enforcement. But they are also the ones telling me to understand my rights over trusting a cop. It's more of the case of don't hate the player hate the game. Cops have the power to make decisions that can charge you with a crime or complicate your life, even over small mistakes or misunderstandings. So, if you did come across someone who wanted to make your life hell for w/e reason, they'd likely succeed with you. That’s why knowing your rights and how the system works is helpful.
