What'd You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)
I think this forum could use a BBV thread, so here it is.
Brag: Shot 80 today on my home course (par 72) - I'm a 12 hand
I do watch quite a few golf videos but I rarely put anything to work that they suggest. I just add them to my total base of knowledge, but realize they aren't the gospel. I take lessons as well and don't always put things to work that my teacher suggests if it just isn't working.
That being said, driver was significantly better today with the new grip. It's a work in progress for sure, mostly just trying to dial in club setup properly. I only pushed one just a tad right and a couple pulled left but I know my club face was just too closed on those. All in all a vast improvement.
My normally reliable 3 wood abandoned me today and cost me probably 6 strokes. However, my sometimes inaccurate irons were spot on all day. Putting was pretty good but general sloppiness all over hurt me. Ended up with 98 (46,52). On the par 4 hole 18 I hit a really bad second shot (3 wood) and had a scary 60 yard third shot over a tree and a bunker but got it within 10' and sunk the putt for par. I guess that means I have to keep playing.
Had one of my most bizarre rounds ever today. Nuke driver on 1, make 27 footer for birdie. Second straight round starting -1, probably less than 10 times in my lifetime. Nuke driver on 2, easy two putt par. Proceed to hit driver into penalties on 3, 5, 6, and 9. Make a great up and down on 6 to save par, hit a 55 yard wedge to inside a foot. Turn in +11 46.
Make a 26 footer for par on 10, leave a 16 foot bird dead in the heart one inch shy on 11, jar a 15 foot bird on 12, jar another 15 foot bird on 13. So I'm -2 for the back on 14 tee, a 270 yard par 4. Hook a 3W into the penalty and make double. Make a 9 footer on 15 for par, then hit driver into penalty on 16, but hit a very good 6i after the drop and save bogey. Hook a driver almost into penalty on 17, but safe and laser a 4h to 35 feet and make par.
So I get to 18 +1 on the back, +2 is my best nine. I actually DON'T hook driver and hit a good one. (nuked drivers on 11 and 13, so drivers were basically nuked or missed 70 yards left). Then completely duff a 3w into penalty. Then flush a 7i to 15 feet to save bogey. 46-38--84. 84 with SEVEN penalties. My second lowest round ever is 82. With just my average day driving I'm shooting 77-78. OOOF.
Also took my dad to the course today for his Christmas gift and he told me he doesn't know how many more rounds he has, his feet/legs really bothering him, and he tapped out after 15 holes despite having a cart and perfect weather. Super bummed about it.
many may years ago someone on this forum recommended paper tiger and I really enjoyed the book , appreciate that
Wow crazy round black aces. Good job keeping your head in it.
Yeah, my father-in-law i suspect doesn't have a ton of rounds left in him. He's not the easiest person to play with but I feel like there will be a day soon when I can't. So i do.

Thanks! My mental game approach has improved drastically over the past couple years, not perfect by any means, but significant improvement.
GL to you and your FIL!
Knock Knock knocking on 90's door...
Started with a triple bogey and ended with a triple bogey. 7 pars in between. Losing 3 balls was the difference. 91 (44/47).
Driver is much better. At least when it goes wrong I know exactly why. Swinging as good as ever. Just get in binds here and there.
Saw this fellow crossing the fairway on 5. He let us play through.

nice round! 3 lost balls is worth a lot of strokes...

1 birdie, no doubles, 1 triple(with a 1-putt and no penalty stroke!). Sloppy round. I was spraying my driver all over the property leading to a lot more missed greens than normal and a lot of scrambling. Thankfully I was chipping well and that saved me a handful of strokes, otherwise it could've gotten real ugly. It was pretty windy as well, especially coming in, so that certainly didn't help things. No excuses. Just a bad ball striking day all around. Hopefully I can get to the range this week and work on some things before next weekend's round.
Well, it was chilly by Florida standards and I had so many layers on that I looked like that kid from A Christmas Story that couldn't get up out of the snow. I couldn't hit a damn thing so I'm blaming my bad round on that.
Seriously, I just kept toeing everything, especially my irons. Not sure why. I played the first par 5 down the fairway of the adjoining hole before finally getting my 5 wood to go straight and back on the proper fairway. I somehow ended up with a 98(50/48) which could have been far far worse as bad as I hit. I'll take it.
Weird shot of the day. Pulled and mishit a 6 iron on a par 3, watched the ball bounce about 20' short of the left bunker, bounce a couple times and roll into the bunker. 4 of us scoured the area and never found the ball.
Another inconsistent day of ball striking. A good shot followed by a bad shot. Never got in the groove. Lost 3 balls and struggled in the bunkers. 99(50/49)
My putter, though was ridiculous. 2 putted 16 of the greens. Within 2 feet on almost every one of those. 4 within 6 inches and 2 sat on the lip. These were not short putts either. Just none actually fell in. I can't be unhappy. Most accurate I've ever putted.
awesome stuff aces and lots of other satisfying golf reads upthread
keep enjoying every bit of it while you still can folks
It was around 40 degrees and a little breezy this morning. That's pretty cold for this part of the country. I almost didn't go. Glad I did. Ended up being really nice. By the time I finished I was down to 2 shirts.
Once again, my ball striking was so inconsistent. Great shot followed by a duff. A few drives pushed way right. It's killing my score. I was pretty good once I got around the green and my putter continues to save me from some really bad scores. Only 3 putted once. Ended up with 98(52/46).
If I ever just make solid contact on a consistent basis my scores will be drastically better. I think I know what I'm doing wrong most of the time. Just gotta stop doing it. More concentration on each shot I guess.

Welcome to golf, my friend. Welcome to golf.
I played with two brothers today, guessing maybe 30 years old or so. One of them hit about as far as I do. The other absolutely smashed everything. A couple drives were probably 320 or so, one was a good 340. He put his driver away mid round because he couldn't hit it straight and was hitting a 3 iron off the tee about 75 yards past my drive. We talked about it and they had no idea why one could make his club go so fast and the other couldn't. About the same size and build and both played about the same amount of golf. Weird.
Anyways, cold and blustery today. Took me about to get moving. Driver is still and adventure. I have a lesson tomorrow. Maybe he can help. I'm over closing the club face to keep it from going right, but then I pull one way left. Something is wrong. Everything else worked pretty well. My 3 wood of all clubs has become my most dependable. Shot 94(47/47). Made 3 pars in a row - first time for that. 4 pars total. None of them was a GIR so my chipping was decent as was putting.
I'm contemplating giving up the white tees. There are a couple of par 4s that I can't reach even with a good drive and a solid 3 wood. I'm hitting 3 wood on a couple of par 3s. Seems excessive. Dunno.

No birdies, 3 doubles, and just 4 pars. Yikes! I wish I could blame alcohol, or drugs, or an injury, or the weather. Nope, I just played like complete ass. I'm lost right now. My driver swing is still messed up and it's leaked into other parts of my game. I'm spraying irons everywhere, can't control distance on less than full shots, and have no idea how the ball is going to react on short chip & pitch shots. Combine that with a lack of confidence in my putter right now and yeah, it's a disaster. The funny thing is I actually rode over to the course Saturday afternoon and spent an hour on chipping and putting. You wouldn't know it watching me play on Sunday. I've shot higher numbers but I can't remember a round where I felt as lost as I did during this one. Hopefully I can put it behind me and play a little better this weekend.
Damn! I need to make a road trip. Think I could hang within 5 strokes of that.

What’s the yardage and par from whites? From the next tee up? How far is a solid driver and a solid 7 iron for you?

It's par 72. According to the scorecard, the yardage for whites is 6112. Yellow - 5726. A solid driver is maybe 210, usually around 200.. A solid 7 iron is maayyybbee 130 but I use it as my 120-125 club.
5700 sounds pretty great for those yardages IMO.
Today was not good.
I took a lesson yesterday and told him I wanted to work on 2 things. Straightening out driver, and trying to get some better distance. But the lesson turned out to just be embarrassing. I couldn't make any sort of decent contact with the ball. I just wanted to cry. However, I managed to get maybe 4 or 5 shots that were my normal shots. He told me with my driver I was actually opening the club face during my swing. My hands were turning (backwards?) I guess. I told him that isn't an issue with my other clubs and he said he sees it quite often with driver. As far as distance, I'm still really stiff and "handsy". And, my hands, he told me, are behind the ball/club head at impact. I'm sort of just pushing the club instead of swinging. He had me set up with my hands forced (way) ahead of the club and try to keep them there during impact. He told me I should exaggerate it until I get the feel of it. I managed to hit a couple and definitely got some more out of it.
This has really messed me up on the course though. I'm so intent on score that I'm not swinging like I should. My father-in-law mentioned that it looks like I'm reverting to my earlier swing. Yuk. Anyways, he said I should be using what I hope to be my future swing on the course, score be damned. Probably a good idea.
On to the round. It was another cold morning and I didn't dress appropriately. I was cold the whole time. We played with a lady about my age, and she was crushing her drives as far as mine. How depressing. It makes me absolutely know my distance problem is technique, not strength. Today I didn't do anything right. Even my lately reliable putter failed me. Lucky to shoot 100 (50/50).
Yeah, combo tees are great also.
And yeah, as much as you can focus on process over outcomes, that's the fastest path IMO. And I'd think about how, not long ago, you would have been pretty thrilled with a 50-50--100 round. Excellent measure of progress when your old good days are your new bad days. Onward!
