Star Trek Thread: To Boldly Split Infinitives
Okay whatcha wanna do? Shows? Movies? Shall we start at Star Trek season 1, episode 1???
I'll kick this off odd, with a
Been watching next gen. It's been so long or my memory is so bad its like I'm watching brand new all over again. I remember nothing. Kinda scary but also awesome. I remember who everyone is, but all these shows are basically brand new.
regret saying positive things about picard s3
that fleeting moment where i began to think it was getting decent was short lived - still going to finish it because it's not s2 bad and an improvement over s1
but a couple things really bother me about the main plot which I'll put in the spoiler, but the main thing is the writers just basically ripped off the entire battlestar galactica plotline
Spoiler
1 we find that the main villains are the borg - so the borg is this all powerful entity and if capturing picard's son was so important, why not just send a few dozen cubes to get it done instead of relying upon a 2nd tier minion to do it - just doesn't make sense, if they sent some borg cubes after jack from the start they would have gotten him
2 they lure the changelings onto the ship to trap them behind some force fields - which is just so dumb, and it somehow works, and then for plot reasons they do the datalore thing to then undo it all and then there's like no plan b etc and their crew just starts getting slaughtered - umm... what were you going to do if they weren't just going to mindlessly run down the hallways chasing you?
3 are the changelings are still aboard the federation vessels when the borg switcheroo occurs? if they were on most ships and obviously doing everything they could to avoid getting beamed then wouldn't they have been killed - seems like they didn't quite think it through
4 feels cheap to build up the dominion as this all powerful foe and then just wipe them off the board like they don't matter and it's now borg
5 how would it be possible to insert borg DNA etc etc and not ever get noticed etc, the main issue with this whole conspiracy thing is that it basically required all of starfleet to be under dominion control - in which case why do they even need to do half the things they did? was just poorly thought through and executed in my opinion
6 wanted to puke with the fan service given towards taking the enterprise
and that's where i left off, right after "make it so" and "engage" *eyeroll
Granted, there are some plot holes, but the issue with any Borg episode (including "Best of Both Worlds"), is "why don't the Borg do x", as The Borg are so powerful they can basically do anything.
oh man, ripping off both battlestar galactica and star wars now lol
these writers are pure hacks just recycling plot points from old scifi and space operas
haven't watched any trek in a while, anything worth catching up on?
the animated "lower decks" has some good episodes. I haven't watched the whole series. i have a hard time with animation. but the show has a lot of respect for trek traditions, and also is irreverent at the same time.
there was a great crossover episode. I think it was on strange new worlds, where the animated characters got transported to the show.
look on tv show ratings graph to find the good episodes.

^ Agree. Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds are the good stuff these days.
And if you want ST adjacent, The Orville is pretty damn good. It starts a bit wishy-washy but quickly gets real strong (by episode 3 or 4, say), and stays strong.
See my comments about Picard s3 a few posts above yours.
While I have some complaints about SNW, it's the best of the new stuff.
I hated Discovery.
2 eps into Starfleet Academy and I'm "WTF am I watching??"
Spoiler
A half Klingon/half Jem'Hadar female cadet master
A sensitive Klingon cadet
The bad boy central character pursuing the daughter of the Betazoid leader>>>
The holographic doctor from Voayager singing opera at a State dinner reception???
Starfleet Academy is definitely "The Acolyte" of Nu Trek.
Starfleet Academy has unfortunately decided to go down the route of "high school in Star Trek". Hoping that the third episode is the low point of the season, because it was really quite awful.
I thought the 4th episode of starfleet academy was great. normally the Klingon culture episodes are not my favorite, but this one was great!
