The ATP/WTA Tennis thread
The cluster**** to the AO seems to have been resolved, and we're ready to fire up the hype for 2021.
I'm running a season
Do pro tennis players ever do "chops" of the prize pool behind the scenes like in poker tournaments? This year's us open singles winner gets $5M and 2nd place gets $2.5M. For some players that is alot of $.
That's a good question.
But tennis edge is more obvious and predictable than poker edge and there's basically no luck. If you think you'll beat someone, you'd probably want 1st prize to be maxed out. And if an opponent approached you with a deal, you'd probably suspect he has an injury or some issue that isn't known and is trying to.bump up 2nd place.
The men's final is basically a flip I think on betting sites, but I'm sure at least one of them feels more confident than that that he's going to win.
The mightve been chops of appearance fees way back when that was a scandal. Venus & Serena maybe chopped/pooled early on.
But everyone makes too much offcourt now, and figuring the taxes would be crazy.
It's so weak of the USTA to ask the networks to censor the crowd reaction to Trump attending the men's final. They obviously know that the booing will be thunderous.
How does one get reliable viewership figures to compare womens final vs mens ?

Unreal. Half the crowd won't even be in their seats until most of the way through the first set because of all the security protocols for Trump.
I also am not sure there would be/was thunderous boos, either.
Regardless, I am very excited for this. Somewhat surprised Alcaraz is a slight dog ...
Sinner below par at 2-5 in the first. Quite a lot of bad misses.
Sinner's play seems to be getting better with each game.
Sinner keeps playing bad shots at break point down.
I'm the worst sports bettor alive.
Trump looked like he had bet on Sinner.
Men: Carlos 6 slams, Jannik 4 slams
Alcaraz aiming to join McEnroe and Wilander on 7.
Women: Iga 6 slams, Aryna 4 slams
Swiatek aiming to join Henin and Venus on 7.
Hard to predict who outside of the new Big Two wins a slam. Does anyone really think Sasha can grab one? Does he believe it himself? Can Novak get to Australia 100% fit and give it one last tilt?
The new Big Two extending their streak from 8 to 12 consecutive grand slams is surely very likely.
Diallo gave Fritz a real test, but in the end the American’s serving quality made the difference.
And we are back.
My girl Sabalenka off to a great start winning Brisbane last week (also interesting given the Ukranian opponent Kotysuk ((sp??))).
Raducan(‘t) already out of AO. She is so bad.
That new “Raddo” fan won’t have to trouble himself going to any more of her matches.
<3
I found a new love, too. Randomly turned on the Tennis Chanel during the Brisbane/Auckland stretch. Jacqueline Cristian from Romania.
Also, Anisimova is also a total babe, IMO.
