The "LOLCANADA" thread...again

So what's new?

I've noticed the Liberals are now ahead in all major polls and Trudeau hasn't even started to campaign yet

Matter of opinion. Personally feel we are own own worst enemy. We can't even agree what's best for the country between provinces, it's been reported internal trade barriers cause more damage than Trump's tarrifs. .

Two things can be true at the same time. I definitely applaud Trudeau's work with the free trade agreement in Canada, and Carney's extension of that work removing the remaining items at the federal level. THe provincial level is now where remaining things often lie and there is progress but I agree more can be done. That doesn't speak for or against Trump's attacks on us.

by Shifty86

I was referring to the examples you used. Generally speaking most countries do what the US tells them regardless of who's POTUS.

Generally speaking the POTUS doesn't make crazy demands. Like this whole bit of referring to a regular bipartisan status quo doesn't work when you have a nutjob who fancies himself an autocrat as the world's most powerful person and chooses to attack his neighbour and closest global ally.

Trudeau's work on the free trade agreement in Canada . Please enlighten us what that was ?
I have lived in BC for three years and by far so restricted by this province especially dealing with Alberta

Ifs not my fault you are profoundly ignorant. I’ve told you about it many times. If you’ve forgotten you are welcome to google it.

But it's doesn't get mentioned and for the past year all we hear about is Trump. The last election was decided on Elbows up! against Trump. Not we need to break down provincial trade barriers because they hurt us more than US tariffs.

Arresting a CFO that is criminally charged is a crazy demand?

Oh you just aren't paying attention. Reducing barriers to interprovincial trade was absolutely a significant part of Carney's election platform, any speech about "elbows up" that trigger you so endlessly almost certainly contained mention to all the classic Carney lines like making one economy out of 13 or whatever. Trudeau actually got the ball rolling with the Canada Free Trade agreement years prior, but Carney then extended this at the federal level and we've already seen a bunch of province to province agreements. So yes, there is bilateral consensus on this issue. At the same time, it is easy to overstate the issue which I think you are doing here. For instance, in the context of free trade with the US which is 10x our size, it often didn't really matter if a emergency kit made in quebec wasn't the right set of things for regulations on paramedics in BC, because ultimately that emergency kit manufacturer was going to sink or swim based on the US market, so some of these types of things are sort of revealed challenges given the risks with the US market that shouldn't be risks in the first place but for your guy.

Arresting a CFO that is criminally charged is a crazy demand?

Except it obviously is with a realpolitik perspective. Canada experienced massive pushback from China, as was to be expected, which made real harms on our economy with Chinese tariff and non-tariff barriers on our goods and services as a result, as well as the political crisis with the two michaels that were seized in retaliation. I'm not saying to not do it, it's just that this action has real world consequences, they are significant, and that is the kind of thing that Canada did do as part of being in the united states' orbit.

This is the problem with getting your news from MAGA X accounts. You could also just try reading this thread and see most of us being overly critical of the Canadian government but most of us are also capable of chewing gum whilst walking. I guess you aren't. Can only focus on 1 subject at a time otherwise it gets too confusing.

Better than getting your news from the CBC

So basically lots of talk and no action like everything Trudeau says

by lozen

Better than getting your news from the CBC

lol no. It's like this right wingers get super mad at minor partisan bias in what is predominantly "bothsidesism" news coverage that equally quotes both leaders, equally invites panelests from both sides, etc. But then they replace that with this like torrent of algorithmic world-view confirming social media hate feeds and are deluded into thinking they have somehow gotten the better end of the stick. Don't get me wrong, I like the snarky hot takes as much as the next person, but there absolutely is a role for basic major news journalism and it's kinda sad to see how you guys have turned away from it. I think it's what gets such regular examples of ignorance like....the next post.

by lozen

So basically lots of talk and no action like everything Trudeau says

No, the other way around. There was action, but we just didn't talk about it much. Trudeau's Free Trade Agreement was a big first step in what is today a political salient issue because of the attacks from Trump. But it wasn't politically salient back then, so while I've told you about it many times and you've apparently completely forgotten, it was real action. Just as Carney's eliminating remaining federal barriers was real action. But all you guys do is talk, and then project that on your enemies even when they are literally doing or have done the thing you are talking about.

by uke_master

Oh you just aren't paying attention.

Sure I am, not sure you are. What was the top issue for baby boomer voters? Did you not spend months trying to link Poilievre to Trump?

Your own words are that we are in under massive threat and in a trade war. Would you be ok with using the emergency act to build pipeline or is it only to freeze truckers bank accounts?

by uke_master

Except it obviously is with a realpolitik perspective. Canada experienced massive pushback from China, as was to be expected, which made real harms on our economy with Chinese tariff and non-tariff barriers on our goods and services as a result,

So? How is that any different than experiencing push back and real harms from the USA.

Can you name 3 "crazy demands" the "nutjob" asked of Canada?

Lol, I'm endlessly amused by how you seem to think you ask........good questions. Yes, baby boomers correctly were worried about Trump's trade war with Canada. That obviously was - and still is - a massive threat. Poilievre obviously did - and still does - consistently pull from the Trump playbook to the joy of his conservative supports and chagrin of much of the rest of Canada. Debatably had he not done that he would be the prime minister right now. And lol of all lols at trying to gotcha question emergency act into here. So utterly pathetic.

So? How is that any different than experiencing push back and real harms from the USA.

Now you are getting it! Yes, those ARE similar! Canada is getting threats and harms from both China and the US. Both are bad. The US matters quite a bit more for us given proximity and integration levels and that they were supposedly a close ally who isn't supposed to be harming their neighbour, but hey you are supporting them not I.

by Shifty86

SCan you name 3 "crazy demands" the "nutjob" asked of Canada?

25% tariffs, 50% tariffs, 100% tariffs.

by uke_master

A "massive threat" but interprovincial trade barriers are worse than the tariffs? But zero hysteria around it.

Cool, where's your posts about China attacking us?

Two things can be true. Tariffs can be bad. And interprovincial trade barriers can be bad. But I think it's time you show your homework on this claim of interprovincial trade barriers being worse than the tariffs.

by Shifty86

Cool, where's your posts about China attacking us?

You really just don't pay any attention at all do you? Like we - both ITT and generally across Canadian society throughout that period - EXTENSIVELY discussed the two michaels situations and the huawei heir and the economic retaliation. LIke it was a whole ****ing season of political discourse. Just LMAO at "where's your post about china attacking us"?

by Shifty86

Tariffs aren't a demand. So can you name 3 "crazy demands"?

51st state, 100% tariffs following a speech he didn't like, wanting to do away with any cars/lumber/etc. Deranged, lunatic threats that never before has an ally threatened. Half the craziness is that there ISN"T a like reasonable, coherent "demand" Canada can do to stop the attacks. We pretend for a minute it is about the 1% of fentanyl etc, but then quickly abandon these delusions.

I think you should stop trying. Any Canadian still a Trump fan is clearly suffering from something.

How do you even argue with ''name 3 crazy demands'' when it's all crazy. Every day Canadians wake up to new Trump news with another threat of something. Today's news is ''Trump says US will have 'very substantial' response if Canada enacts trade deal with China''. Tomorrows news is ''Trump threatens 100% tariffs on milk because Carney didn't wish him a happy birthday''. No point in debating with the Shifty's of the world, they don't live in reality. They live in a MAGA X echo-chamber.

Yeah you can come up with a ton of crazy demands but he keeps backing off most . Shifty may be the only Trump fan /

On the milk thing Yes the USA has never hit their quota so why would they bitch? Well it turns out that quota is for milk they ship to Canada and process in Canada . The problem for them is no one will process their milk. Its not like they can ship a skid of 4 litre jugs to Canada .

It will be an interesting summer with CUSMA negotiations

Ironically, the more Canadians boycott US goods, the less leverage Canada is going to have in the upcoming trade deals. What is the point of having trade with a country that is boycotting all your products anyways?

US automakers provide a lot of well paying jobs to Canadians, especially union jobs. But if Canadians aren't buying American vehicles anyways (which appears to be the case) why should they continue production in Canada? GM is quietly ramping down production in Canada and laying off employees; but what are they supposed to do? Those plants and jobs are for the Canadian domestic market, and no one in Canada is buying vehicles right now.

Right so in lalaland does it make more sense to try and restore this relationship or keep making things worse? See, we can all pretend the US doesn't need Canada, but the ones who do pretend that, don't live in reality.

Demand is falling for shitty American cars yes. Surprisingly demand is borderline insatiable for Honda's and Toyota's. Lets blame Canadians for it!

I get it though. It's hard for you to actually argue what's happening because if you did, you'd have to concede nothing Canada is doing is being done from a malicious POV. It's easy to defend Trump when you don't live in reality, which seems to be the case with you quite often.

I really don't think so. It'll just be more of the same. US doesn't need Canada, Canada survives because of the US but if you deal with someone else we'll try to make your life worse. All the while ignoring all the governors who are literally begging Canadians to come over.

Lol, like you always say "Google it".

by uke_master

51st state,

Not a demand.

by uke_master

100% tariffs following a speech he didn't like,

Not a demand. The demand was don't make a deal with China and the tool used to stop that was 100% tariff threat.

by uke_master

wanting to do away with any cars/lumber/etc.

"Wanting to do away with"?

by uke_master

Deranged, lunatic threats that never before has an ally threatened.

Lol ok, when a person says a "nutjob" is making "crazy demands" you would think it would be easy for that person to list atleast 3, guess not.

by uke_master

Half the craziness is that there ISN"T a like reasonable, coherent "demand" Canada can do to stop the attacks.

Right, because Trump knows we are ****ed and is exposing it/using it to his advantage. Which is where the 51st state thing came from and why the whole Elbows up! campaign and hysteria is silly. It distracts from the issues Canada can fix, like interprovincial trade barriers, pipelines and the last decade of incompetent government. But instead it's just Trump is just being a big meanie..

Shifty is right about interprovincial trade barriers were the province I reside in may be the worst

by Shifty86

Lol, like you always say "Google it".

Oh you seem confused. I've always googled it. I don't think you are characterizing things accurately, but I'm happy to let you show your work. You won't, of course, but we can at least point out that you won't.

by Shifty86

Right, because Trump knows we are ****ed and is exposing it/using it to his advantage.

Aren't we supposed to be super close allies? Like yes, Canada spent the last hundreds years economically, culturally, politically, and militaristically integrating with the US as our closest ally. That's, on balance, a good thing. It isn't a think for that ally to turn around and exploit to their advantage. Like wtf!

Lol ok, when a person says a "nutjob" is making "crazy demands" you would think it would be easy for that person to list atleast 3, guess not.

Lol. Ok, let me rephrase. The nutjob lunatic is repeatedly either attacking Canadian economy or threatening economy shattering levels of tarifs over petty slights with no reasonable, measured thing Canada can seemly do to stop the attacks and threats of more attacks. There is a shifty set of pretend "demands" like the whole pathetic bit where you pretended trump was genuinely caring about fentanyl and not it being a legal pretext that have now long since been abandoned.

by lozen

Shifty is right about interprovincial trade barriers were the province I reside in may be the worst

Is there a single one of you guys who gave one **** about interprovincial trade barriers (or could even name some examples of those) prior to Mark Carney running an election campaign on removing them?

by uke_master

Not till I moved to BC and found my plumber, gas fitter , electrician tickets were no good here but we're in other provinces . As well a friend who is a massage therapist certified in Alberta can't work here unless she spends a ton of cash .
Also when I thought of bringing wine from the USA and found out it's way more than bringing it in to Alberta . Yeah I know that's an international border .
Though they restrict wine and beer from other provinces

Does Alberta recognize BC trades ? Yes

On a lighter note one of the most annoying women will be on Bill Maher Friday . Yes Chrysta Freeland though John Mellencamp will be as well

by uke_master

Oh you seem confused. I've always googled it.

Cool, you also said it was part of the Elbows Up! campaign, so either argue your point or stfu.

by uke_master

Aren't we supposed to be super close allies? Like yes, Canada spent the last hundreds years economically, culturally, politically, and militaristically integrating with the US as our closest ally. That's, on balance, a good thing. It isn't a think for that ally to turn around and exploit to their advantage. Like wtf!

When did we not become close allies? There's a lot of noise and ongoing trade negotiations but we are still super close allies and have the 2nd best trade deal in the world with USA.

by uke_master

Lol. Ok, let me rephrase. The nutjob lunatic is repeatedly either attacking Canadian economy or threatening economy shattering levels of tarifs over petty slights with no reasonable, measured thing Canada can seemly do to stop the attacks and threats of more attacks.

So when you cheered Elbows up! What did you expect Canada was going to do? You wanted a trade war and to put your elbows up and fight. Now you throw a hissy fit when the other side makes threats back?

by uke_master

There is a shifty set of pretend "demands" like the whole pathetic bit where you pretended trump was genuinely caring about fentanyl and not it being a legal pretext that have now long since been abandoned.

Lol at being super flipping mad a President from another country made us crack down on fentanyl.
