Live poker PLO vs PLO5
Hi all,
What is your experience or feeling of whether 4 card or 5 card PLO is the most offered version of Omaha in casinos?
I think even less than 4 years ago, it was clearly PLO, and I definitely have seen a shift from 4 card to 5 card in many casinos in the past few years.
Is it very country / region dependent?
The main 2 casinos I play at offer only PLO5 now. Additionally I have been to a random one a few months back and they had dealer's choice PLO or PLO5 and except me that I just wanted to switch it up one time, absolutely no one chose PLO, everyone wanted 5 cards all the time. In contrast, I have been to Paris in December and they only had 4 card PLO. Madrid I think has both in theory, but in practice it was 4 card going on.
Curious about any thoughts.

Why would someone want to play 4 cards after playing 5 ?
I think PLO is the better game for a winning player for two reasons and those reasons amplify each other
1)PLO5 tends to go even more multiway
2)with more cards it's more nutpeddlery.
Learn pre-flop and find a way to deal with the variance.
Wherever the worst players are.
Both have their merits and require very similar skill sets.
Table selection is the most important skill especially in live poker.
Thanks, makes sense on the edges in PLO.
Of course if the choice is there wherever the juice is, that is where i would play.
I was rather wondering for locations where you basically have maybe 2-3 tables of Omaha, and it is usually the same type. Whether it is shifting a lot to PLO5 or not.
I heard they have live PLO6 in the UK, would love to check it out.
More cards means that people will make more mistakes, as 5c+ games are not as studied and more hands will look playable to recreational players, but even to regs I'd say.
Standard deviation will be higher, but also the edges.
As @amok said, it'll be lot more about nut peddling.
We do. Most rooms that offer Omaha have moved to PLO6 over the last decade. A few spread 456 with the button choosing; choosing 4 not usually popular.
This is kind of what I mean, not specifically regarding PLO6 since it is quite rare outside of the UK, but is there a trend of moving away from PLO towards PLO5?
As i can only know for sure from my small sample of places I go to, I was wondering if there is any confirmation that this is happening.
Nevertheless, I do know some places that only offer PLO still.
Yes there is a tendency, because weaker players prefer having more cards, because they tend to believe it's better for them (and I think it is). Nutpeddling does not require a lot of skill, but of course there is a lot of value to be had, especially pre-flop.
PLO5 players tend to be worse than PLO players for many of the reasons stated above.
From a casino point of view I expect more 5 / 6 card in the future, because they can rake more $$ per hour, because flops go even more multiway, because pre-flop equities run even closer. But in The Netherlands I've so far seen only PLO (4).
this might be true in euroland but in the US the max chop will be hit every hand regardless so they would either lose money because you're lucky to get 7 hands per down or it wouldn't matter in time games (which all 5+ PLO games will likely be)

They had dealers choice 4 or 5 for a while in Amsterdam, not anymore though
Thank you all!
I think Europe in particular has a lot of PLO5 going on.
What I noticed is many Holdem games have PLO5 DBBP, and that is extremely juicy, as many Holdem players have no idea of hand strength and dangers of chasing unnutted outs or dominated draws.
However, even the gambly fish that switched to 5 card still have learned a thing or two and are not making as many huge mistakes.
