Saying that Annette Obrestad was some luckbox who just got attention because she was a girl is not only wrong but its so wrong its clear the poster wasnt even around back then.
She was considered the best online tournament player before winning the WSOPE ME... She was literally the first example of online tourney crusher crushing the live felt.

No one can top the guy who crushed scrabble so hard he started playing scrabble in french as a challenge despite not knowing the language, just memorized the dictionary or something and won there as well.
Won a satty on FTP for WSOP main back in 2011. Part of the package was chosing a FTP pro to have a lunch with. I chose Annette ofc, easiest choice of my life. Never went to Vegas in the end and actually got refunded for the package, but still regret not having that lunch. GL Annette, hope this thread gets updated often.

Cant stand her. Victim complex when she was handed everything possible for luckboxing 1 tourney and being a girl. Had a horrible attitude all the way through her "fame" where she never did anything else. Will be gone again in 6 months when she runs out of money someone else is giving her.

It's too bad some people criticize others about their weight. Like Annette, Karen Carpenter was chided about her weight when she was slightly heavy. It did a number on her psyche and we know how that ended up. Sorry, but I'm pretty sure i know more about Karen Carpenter than you. You probably didn't know there was a period of her life (before she was very thin) where she looked a little overweight and that fact was mentioned in at least one article. That lack of knowledge was probably the reason you made such a comment, which I can understand.

IIRC, Annette mentions her weight loss twice in the interview but doesn’t say she was bullied or that it was a leading factor in her stopping playing poker. In fact, didn’t occur during her sabbatical?
But bringing up Karen Carpenter is a pretty wild derail regardless, though certainly anyone still active here knows full well who she is.

She’s probably was learning English in school/at home at an early age but still very impressive achievement.

Actually she did say her eating disorder and constantly thinking about food was a reason she stopped playing (see starting at 20;25).
Not really, sadly they both had rude comments made about their weight and both developed an eating disorder. In Annette's case her food disorder (that she admits she had and still has problems with) caused her to lose focus on her current career at that time, a career she thought she'd do forever, and in Karen's case it ultimately cost her her life. This is serious stuff and all those who threw rude comments her way should take notice of the possible results of their schoolyard behavior.

There are lots of highly ranked scrabble competitors who compete in a second or third language. I recall talking to my friend 20 years ago, when he was ranked #3 in the world. He said there was a group of players from Thailand who were highly ranked in American scrabble, and who did not speak English at all.

It's likely there is no official Thai scrabble dictionary so they always play in English.

lol that was my point earlier. Karen Carpenter was born in 1950 and died in 1983! So you’d (you meaning the general public, not you as a specific poster lol) likely need to be ~60yo+ to have any memory reference of Karen Carpenter. But, maybe the demo for remaining 2+2 posters is 60+ lol!
