Why do people waste so much of the life they have while not old trying to ensure they will be old as much as possible?

Couldn't agree more. Mainly they've been indoctrinated with the idea of saving as much as possible when they're young aka wasting their best years, so they can retire with wealth (if they even make it that far).

and not drinking or eating properly

That's implied in what I wrote. Material things are hugely overrated unless they can be consumed.

I think worry, especially over things you can't control is a major contributor to wasting away rhe good years. Working a shitty job so you dont have to work when youre too decrepit and miserable would suck but you still might have to end up working a shitty job when youre old a decrepit if you dont. Find the hobbies and things that you like and if your lucky you might work a job that is actually fun. Oh, and lift heavy weights and often!

by jalfrezi

Not sure how you’re defining old, but will you also suck?

Probably.

In the vein of the following comments I doubt I will live to be very old for a number of reasons

Most of the old people you think suck now also sucked quite a bit when they were young.

The key to not sucking a lot more as you age is to remain true to your values. Sometimes that becomes difficult because one’s digestive system weakens with age.

Na old people almost universally suck

Bit juvenile.

Well, most of our olds have severe lead poisoning that has made them slowly go crazy while measurably getting dumber and angrier.

There are a lot of things the Boomer generation is doing to effectively pull up the ladder on the younger generation while having zero introspection, respect, or empathy.

Maybe they should be better? Maybe y'all should be better if my blanket statement is hitting a nerve

People of all age groups mostly suck eggs.

Hope that doesn't surprise you.

I'm for sure getting dumber, but less angry. In my case it was my foolishly believing that the Medical-Industrial Complex had a clue what they were doing when giving me psych meds that accelerated my brain rot.

There are a lot of things the Boomer generation is doing to effectively pull up the ladder on the younger generation while having zero introspection, respect, or empathy.

As a generalization, I agree with this (sadly).

Maybe they should be better? Maybe y'all should be better if my blanket statement is hitting a nerve

We should ALL do better.

Teamwork makes a dream work!

There is no 'I" in team!

Blaming boomers is dumb and culty - especially if most have lead poising and are angry a s a result. In that case, we should blame the silent gen.

But it just simplifies the hate whcih makes it easier than trying to solve anything but instead further divides everyone - which weve had enough of. And this of course compelelty ignores all issues with generalizing and shunning a group simply because they were born from 48 64 or w/e.

I'm not a boomer but I think things are getting better, not worse. I mean if I had the choice of being born at anytime up to the present, I wouldn't hesitate to pick today. And that holds if it were a random draw out of all the babies in the world.

I agree with a lot of that but the environment plays a significant role. Seeing the worst of 8 billion people streaming in on a 4 inch screen every minute of everyday is tough on the psyche.

Right, and that's what elevates the hatred. I mean, take a look around. But Gen B might have the wherewithal to think that it's a bad idea to send the millennials to the chopping block because they invented candy crush that ****ed up their parents psych. It's cliche, but it's the hate that's the root of the problem - not the solver.

by lozen

It's mild on the insult level here .

I’m joking, because I was given an infraction before for saying victor was exhibiting mental illness when he called a poster a white supremacist. This was based off victor’s own statement that he was mentally ill over the evil west or something to that effect. It was apparently weaponization of mental illness lol

I'm 68 y/o, but if I could choose I'd choose to born into the present as well.

I think the root goes a bit deeper. Identity politics can blur the line between actions and identity, which is basically the opposite of “condemn the act, not the actor." That’s where the hatred creeps in.

It's one thing boomers made bad decisions. But implying there’s something inherently flawed about them as people - as if we wouldn’t have done the same if we grew up in their circumstances - is what identity politics is all about.

There’s no dispute that indebting future generations and polluting their environment are bad things. But that’s different from saying or implying that they’re bad people. That’s where the hatred of others starts. The irony being doing so is probably an inherent flaw in humans.

Headlines like "Millennials aren't buying large and very expensive houses, and why that is a problem", "How boomers made houses too expensive for Millennials to buy" are mostly engagement bait. They are made to capitalize on what is some underlying grains of truth, but in a format that allows people to be angry at someone or something. Increased emotion makes you more inclined to make irrational decisions, like pausing over garbage headlines (which makes that ad space in the feed more valuable and generates tracking information) or clicking them (which also makes that ad space more valuable, generates tracking information and additionally opens a site where you can sell even more ads and generate even more tracking information).

Headlines like "Rethinking house regulation" or "How technology and policy could make housing more affordable" rarely makes it into the algorithmic scroll feeds. And even if they did, far fewer people would pause their scrolling or click on them. If they do make it into the feeds it is generally because some savvy editor renamed the headlines to "Why housing regulation failed" or "Why aren't we solving the housing crisis?", and since most articles aren't read beyond headlines, even good articles then just become part of the slop.

Of course, as this becomes the norm it does indeed shape or politics and policy. It limits the exposure of nuanced or constructive takes by functioning as the world's worst editor. It also incentivizes not proposing solutions, because it is better for the media seller that the rage increases. It also removes pressure from leaders and government to find solutions, because it tends to focus very little on why problems like these (and many others) persist.

bc he often explicitly speaks of the inherent supremacy of Western society and culture compared to the Arab world. like, its not even latent with him.

Probably nobody who posts regularly in a politics forum has any desire to get over themselves. Including you and me ofc.

Except Western society and culture IS a vastly superior society and culture compared to the Arab world (in most respects).

For example, your own (often valid) critique of the 'Genocide for Fun and Profit' folks is rooted in Western ideals and culture.
