I have one of David Sklansky’s 1982 WSOP watches — curious what it’s worth

I ended up with something pretty unusual and figured this might be the right place to ask about it.

About two years ago I

Keep some of this energy to defend poker.

why would anyone defend poker? why would it need defending? poker isn't a thing. poker is a vehicle to separate gamblers from their money. it changes to fit the needs of the hustler over the mark.

Melt value.

Has been said in this thread, the value is basically the gold, what's not that shitty atm ;-) Stuff like that doesn't generate extra-value.

oh, so its your imagination. lol. as i thought.

When he said mobsters aren’t glorified/glamorized I decided to bow out of the conversation because he’s obviously just a contrarian troll. I’d suggest you do the same. Wasting time lol

Curious if anyone here has seen one of these before or has any sense of how rare they are / what kind of value they might have.

Very rare as the WSOP awarded only 14 of them -- there were fourteen 1982 WSOP events, the Mixed Doubles awarded two watches, and Vera Richmond requested a bracelet instead for her Ace-to-Five Draw victory.

As already stated,

. The article gives some information about the whereabouts of the other watches, although it fails to subtract Richmond's.

I agree that this belongs in the Poker Hall of Fame if they ever make a permanent, physical one, so maybe hold on to it and cross your fingers.

I was tossed a 5k chip to cut my hair and I tossed it back. So it would have to be more than a flag!!!

Guess that would have been for a full haircut.

There’s just not a collectors market for an item like this. Yes, it’s rare if only 14 were given out. But collectors of anything poker related are extremely small. I doubt you’d fetch anything more than a few % over spot gold price

When I’m 100% correct the vanquished losers tend to run.

Limon, these are admitted pedophiles. conviction in a court of law is irrelevant.

One example, Anthony Keidis admits to having sex with I believe a 14-yo? After he knew she was 14. He wrote that in his book.

I'm not looking to argue with you about whether Rock Gods used to bang underage groupies constantly, everyone knows that's true.

That is not a pedophile. You really need to learn what that word means, apparenly.

Only takes one person for this sort of item. It doesn't have prestige or interest for over just melting it for it's gold as it would've during the boom though. I don't know who that person would be either.

Definitely hall of fame exhibit worthy given most winners have passed away so at least half of these probably have been lost or melted or whatever. Just because it's rare doesn't mean it has extra value though.

Oh my god are you going to do the ephebophile thing? I love that one.

No one here cares about the proper definitions of words or laws or evidence. Which can be infuriating until I realize attention to details is the reason I’m a multi multi millionaire and I made it all off of people who cut corners and “go with their gut”.

Found two. My work here is done.

Let’s bet 100k. More ? Millions? Don’t be a coward. This won’t go well for you. Dealing with snarky morons is basically my job and has made me filthy rich.

Regardless what it’s worth, it’s not a good looking watch imo.

Gold prices are still relatively high. Has to be worth more than it was two years ago simply because of gold prices, right?

Told you that you were arguing with a troll and wasting your time. You had your chance to quit earlier!

He tries too hard to make incendiary comments. Claiming he’s rich just sounds extremely cringey.

Why do you hate the game of poker so much.
Oh wait, I think I can guess.
You failed at it miserably.

We can bet on my “claims” of being a multi millionaire. If you’re not a lying coward. Are you?

My millions of dollars would disagree. Want to bet ?

Limon's not a world class poker player skill-wise, but he's certainly made a lot of money at poker. But that doesn't matter.

Anyway, the number of people who still think of poker as cool and of poker pros as some kind of heroes is very small. For many of those people, the stars of poker are Rampage and Mariano.

To most of the world, these guys are about as cool as Magic The Gathering players. Except with a layer of sleaze, even though casuals don't know how rampant cheating really is in poker. In Slanksy's case, there's even more sleaze. Dedicating your life to making money at gambling is sort of interesting enough that someone might watch a movie or two about it, but it's not as admirable or interesting as being something like an all time great baseball player.

Sklansky wasn't even really a poker star, but the author of early technical books. I think someone compared him to Bill James though, again, Bill James is vastly more accomplished and more important to the culture in general. But anyway, nobody wants to go look at Bill James' cuff links preserved in a display case.

In my personal opinion, it is a little silly to look at a uniform worn by Tom Brady or a guitar played by Prince. But I kind of get it. Going to a museum to look at like, Phil Helmuth' sunglasses or something is ludicrous. Sounds like a comedy sketch.

You have zero clue what my skill is. The skill is getting the money. Looking at red and black rectangles is the trap! It’s worthless. I see the system and exploit it for what it is. I was never fooled by the poker industrial complex. I recognized it as a hustle and proceeded accordingly. Most if not all here have never interacted with an actual multi millionaire 144 IQ genius so it’s alien to them. I should be more accommodating to the plebs.

The desperation of trying to remain relevant is a sad sight to behold. Akin to the Miami Dolphins 1972 football team toasting every year when the last undefeated NFL team falls as they realize they’ve faded into obscurity and need to remind everyone that they still matter.

Just as sad are the people who quit playing poker because they moved on to other things, didn’t enjoy it anymore, can’t hack it anymore, or were never profitable to begin with. Whatever your reasoning for moving on: good for you. The ones that come back and tell people the game is shit, the people are shit, and that you aren’t part of their cool club if you weren’t there in 2006:

Nobody cares.

It's basically all been said already. There just isn't a big poker memorabilia market and sklansky isn't a big enough name. Rarity doesn't equal value if there's no market. You are looking at gold value and that's basically it.

If you had a negreanu, helmuth, ivey or Brunson bracelet or watch it would prob be worth a bit more.

Quit reading after mongo says 72 dolphins aren’t relevant. Wow. Just wow. I guess this is how people who were never relevant talk. It’s alien to me, a literal legend of gambling who helps others make millions.

Who knows someone might buy it for 10-15k to put it on the wall in their mancave poker room or for a poker room at a country club. I am sure the OP's post was not to get a valuation, but to find that one person/organization that might be interested in the watch.
