Can the dealer call the clock in a live cash game?
Live 2-5, Hard Rock in Hollywood.
I saw the dealer call the clock on a player while he was pondering a river call.
The Floor came over and started a countdown.
Never seen this before, seems unethical.

I know "room rules" trumps all, but I've never worked in a room where doing this wouldn't result in a very uncomfortable conversation with the floor at best.
I generally try not to be a Karen but if I was 100% sure that's what happened (maybe a player not in the hand requested it quietly), I would probably speak to a floor away from the table.
Given the floor immediately started the count down, I would assume this is standard procedure for this room. In the online world, automatically starting a clock is standard after a period of time.
I don't think ethics has anything to do with it. The house has some right to call an end to the hand. Otherwise in a monster pot, one player could just wait for days for the other to leave and declare they have the only live hand.
A possibility is that the dealer was asked discretely by a player to call clock. I know some players like to ask it discretely because people get in some type of way about it.
IMO a dealer calling clock is just ridiculous. Unless the dealer is calling clock at the same time every time, it’s just obviously going to lead to abuse and favoritism.
Also, the floor normally would be asking “has the player had adequate time” before starting the countdown.
I’m guessing there are some details left out though.
No details were left out.
No player asked for the clock.
It went down Exactly as described.

3 possibilities:
1) A player did ask for clock and you didn't notice. Sometimes people will make eye contact with the dealer and point at their wrist in whisper it to be subtle. If I'm the dealer I generally won't even answer if someone asked who called it. I know they'll just use the information to start attacking that player.
2) That room does allow a dealer to call clock. It's a pretty rare rule but I have seen it. I haven't played or dealt in that room for years, so I don't know if it's the case there.
3) That dealer is burned out or simply mistaken, and did it on their own. When floors are called over for a clock call, they trust the dealer and just want to get it over with. They know that 95% of the time, that player will fold when the clock hits 2 seconds.
You can simply ask a floor if it's allowed in that room.
You need to go to Inference Kindergarten.
After the fact the Floor communicated that the dealer is Not allowed to call the clock at HR.
He said that he would speak to the dealer about it.
Consensus was that the dealer wanted to selfishly move the game along because no hands dealt meant no tips.

OTOH that is also a perfect way to diffuse tension.
1. Floor could be completely honest in saying this
2. Maybe dealer is allowed to call clock but floor doesn’t want to have that argument with table
3. Maybe dealer communicated a player actually did request but clock and this shuts down The Who questions
4. Maybe floor suspects a player called clock but will talk with dealer later to confirm
It’s a nice non commital response that doesn’t commit to any action but shuts down most argument with minimal feathers ruffled.

No details were left out except the dealer “admitting” he wanted to speed the game up, the floor saying the dealer is not allowed to call the clock, and apparently HR being called?
Weird that you would even ask if a dealer is allowed to call the clock. Weird that “HR” would be called and you somehow know about it even though that’s not something most places would tell players about.
I’m gonna just say I think you are lying to save face but ok.

First of all my guess is that "HR" stands for Hard Rock and not Human Resources.
It makes sense that the Dealer called clock because they wanted to speed things up to get more tips in a cash game. Which is a horrible thing.
Its good that the Floor said he would speak to the Dealer about it in order so that the Dealer wouldn't do it again (or get fired if he did).
In general when a Dealer does something that does not favor the players my hope is that the Floor or Room Manager will stand up for players so that their staff will be trained so it doesn't happen again. When it doesn't happen this way I typically stop playing in the room. So here I would keep playing in the room because I would be thankful as to how the floor ultimately handled it.
My recommendation in situations like this would be to ask the floor when he came over if the Dealer is allowed to call the clock. At that point everyone would confirm that the Dealer called for the clock or the person who signaled that they wanted the clock called would come forward. The floor would then likely have ruled that the clock wasn't called. Ironically somebody might have stepped forward and said that while they didn't ask for the clock to be called that they do want the clock called now...
My "It went down Exactly as described" shirt has people asking a lot of questions already answered by my shirt.
Why then did the floor conduct a countdown after telling you the dealer was not allowed to make the call for clock?
I came across one of Bart Hansen's live calls on YouTube a couple days ago. I can't remember if it was a recent video or YT recommended me something months old.
In the video, Bart told a story about a dealer calling the clock. He also added that it was outrageous and shouldn't be allowed, but it did happen.
Im not a clock person but whats the limit of someone, dealer included not calling a clock. Even if it’s against the rules what if someone takes like literally a half hour but no other players call clock, should the dealer then call clock? Whats the line?
The players involved should be the line. If it doesn’t bother them, then that’s prima facie evidence that it’s not an issue.
The room does have an interest in collecting rake. So if the delay is long enough to attract attention of the floor or shift manager, then they can come and use rule 1 however they want.
The dealer has a personal interest in moving the game along to get more tips. They cannot call the clock usually, but if things go off the rails they can call the floor over and make them aware. They run the risk of pissing off the players who are giving them the tips, so that will naturally limit them abusing this.
Basically, only the players call the clock, but rule 1 can be used at any time by any floor.
Got it makes sense.
I specifically remember at Ballys old room in AC one time i jammed and th guy was taking forever. So one of the other players asked if they can call clock and the dealer said only someone in the hand can call it. I dont do clocks so i just waited what seemed like 15 minutes and then he folded
I think a pushing dealer should be allowed to call clock or at least be allowed to call over a floor to do it. Dealer at the end of the line needs their break!
Guess it depends how long we are talking here. If everyone including the dealer has started to grow a beard then it's time to call the clock.
