Netflix "Watch Instantly"
I just recently rejoined Netflix and was pleased to see they have added a "Watch Instantly" feature where you can stream
I haven't checked out The Shield - but @goofyballer used to claim it was better than The Wire.Season 2 of Southland seems to be finding it's legs through episode 3 or 4. "You Can't Save Everyone" I think was the name of the episode - and it's the first time I felt like they successfully conveyed a point outside of a linear narritive. I've enjoyed the show to this point, and a
Through the 2nd season, and into the 3rd. Still enjoying the show, but "You Can't Save Everyone" was an outlier episode rather than a sign of things to come.
As a whole, the show feels a bit sloppy and disjointed. The ongoing storylines continue, but have yet to really develop into anything interesting, and the individual episode storylines are often half baked.
I think the writers would have done well to watch Veronica Mars for structural inspiration. Each episode has one key mystery, which is developed with one or two character groups - while also progressing the overarching, season long mystery.
Again, I'm enjoying the show, but it feels like they wrote the episode by episode under deadline rather than outlining, defining, and developing the entire season before zooming in.
Just watched Chess mates
i thought it was really good i knew the story but not fully

i wonder did he or didn't he. I kinda feel like he didnt because i dont understand fully how it could be done in a timed match surely there would be some sign he was waiting on some type of signalling 4nal beads or whatever it might have been
The novel comparison might be apt, but I both liked The Wire's first episode right away (the couch setting is tremendous imo), and have rewatched the show. I think I've seen it 3 times in ~15 years? A The Wire rewatch is still miles better than, for instance, sons of anarchy for me.
I am reading The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood, which is the non-fiction book that David Simon wrote about a particularly drug-laden neighborhood in West Baltimore before he made The Wire. It is structurally very similar to The Wire in the sense that it examines various social issues -- cyclical addiction, infrastructure decay, drug violence, political incompetence and corruption, policing, teen pregnancy, education, etc., by following a limited cast of neighborhood characters for an entire year.
The book is extremely insightful and well-written. It's quite long and a bit repetitive, but I nevertheless would highly recommend it if you are a fan of The Wire. Like The Wire, The Corner is streetwise in the extreme and assumes familiarity with corner slang. You see the same cast of characters as in the show. The main difference is that the book is even more hopeless and nihilistic than the show. There are no shot callers like Marlow, Avon, the Greeks, or Prop Joe. There is nothing resembling Greek tragedy. It's just a bunch of adult addicts and teenage dealers who have succumbed to the life. There are a few loosely organized gangs of a sort, but they don't really fight over cornerrs and the dealers are mostly teenagers who are close to small-time, on again-off again, independent operators. The descriptions of the shooting galleries are particularly grim.
I would argue that The Wire is rightfully and correctly rated - as opposed to say The Sopranos which is overrated, imho -, but surprisingly, given that these types of shows that are slow paced and more analytical tend to be overlooked...
Neither is overrated imo.
The Sopranos is an acting masterclass by James Gandolfini and Edie Falco, and David Chase obviously took a huge risk by putting an anti-hero like Tony at the center of a multi-year show. It seems obvious now, but only because so many shows copied The Sopranos.
I agree that The Wire plays like a sprawling novel and respects the viewer more than almost any show I have ever seen.
I liked his book for the corner. His book that Homicide: Life on the streets was based on however was very good. I really recommend that one.
I watched 3.5 episodes of the wire, and decided to quit it.
Glowing review for the Malcom in the Middle revival.
I’m enjoying season 2 of the Night Manager

Its pretty clear he didn't cheat in the Carlsen game. There were extensive anti cheating measures in place. The whole anal beads thing was always just an offhand joke in the chess world that mainstream media picked up because it sounded sensational.
The best part of the doc is the chess.com guys who participated, probably expecting they'd come off looking great. They came off looking amateurish and stupid, and in the end, both Hans and Magnus ended up blaming them.
I remember what Magnus did say at the time was how Hans never looked nervous during their game.
Hans is a complete chess sicko who works very hard on his craft and from what I do know about him, he wouldn't be intimidated by playing "omg Magnus".
Adebisi on Euphoria. lol
not sure if im getting it right but I heard season 3 is a steaming pile of dogshit that makes season 2 worthless. so I never watched season 2.
season 1 had hugh laurie right? that was good.
I believe season 2 might get him back. I’m only on ep 3 but I can see his face on one of the future episodes
I didn’t know season 3 was out?

Yeah unsure if it was season 2 or 3 but I watched some newer episodes recently and the writing is definitely not worth your time despite some Olivia Colman and Hugh Laurie
I just "binged" Night Agent S1-2, in anticipation of S3. S3 isn't going so well. I thought S1 was top notch. S2 fell off a little but was worth watching. S3 is starting a little slow, so far. I may be only 2 episodes in, yet.
A couple recs. Rooster is great. Very very funny. Superb cast and great writing.
On the other hand, Scarpetta is a huge hot mess. They have about 10 plotlines going and none of them make a lick of sense. I won't hate on the acting because the writing is so horrendous the actors don't have a chance. It gets worse as it goes.

It’s 9 years later but most of the same characters in one way or another
I think it’s done very well - it’s smart stuff and a level about the Night Agent, even the first season
Definitely recommend
The Night Manager is excellent. Even if it was bad, I'd probably watch it just for the cast.
Margo's Got Money Troubles is semi-interesting thru the first 3 that dropped. Elle Fanning is naked like 1/3rd of the time.
Beef season 2 was decent, not as good as season 1.
I'm liking Big Mistakes on Netflix thru the first 5.
The Hulk Hogan doc on Netflix is pretty good.
