NBA Gambling Story

That 95 points allowed by Utah in the 2nd half tonight got me thinking. When Paul Westhead moved to the Nuggets from Loyola Marymount's super run and gun offense, time almost stood still for a moment when everybody pondered the O/U for Denver's first game.

Pretty sure it came 299.5, and I still remember my comment at the poker game about it: "No. This is going to be up tempo. (LOL). That's not near high enough." I touted it left and right and threatened to open up a tout service. Well, I just now looked up the final score of game 1, and it landed on 320, 162-158, sailing over. I was thinking it landed on 321 ... oops, my bad.

I super touted it to our dealer, who constantly blew off everything he made dealing betting one of the bookies in the game. He had lost like 17 weeks in a row or something. So he doubled his limit on the game, hit it, and the book said: "Your're cut off. Your action is too tough." Everybody practically crying laughing.

But now when I look up highest ever O/U in the NBA, it comes back 262. Like no records from before 2000. How the heck is that? Anyway, anybody remember Westhead and that 299.5?

Kevin Durant is 2nd in the league in minutes played this year. Didn't see that coming.

30 teams in the league. 16 teams (8 teams from the eastern and western conferences make the playoffs). No more play-in game bullshit. 7 game series where #1 plays #8, #2 plays #7 in each conference etc... Final matchup east vs west for the title.

14 teams don't make the playoffs (teams 9 thru 30). But for this exercise we'll label them 1 thru 14 non playoff teams (CONFERENCES DO NOT MATTER) which will play an NCAA style championship tournament.

Two top teams #1 and # 2 get a bye. That leaves 12 teams that play each other #3 plays #14, #4 plays #13, etc... so 6 teams move on. Now we're down to 8 teams. Then #1plays the lowest seed and #2 plays the next lowest seed. Other remaining teams play each other based on their seeds.

The winner of the non playoff tournament gets the #1 overall pick, second place gets the #2 pick and so on thru pick #14. Losers of the championship tournament get picks #15 thru #30 for the winner.

Obviously there needs to be some tie breakers in there (head to head, common opponents, point differential etc...)

And to prevent semi-tanking to get the 9th spot and just miss the playoffs to try and win the #1 seed, you could give the playoff teams some cap relief or another mid level exception to sign more veterans.

You could put games back on TNT or have Prime Video and Netflix bid on it. I'd for sure watch it. And the games would be done long before the regular finals start.
