I don't follow the ponies like I used to but this surprised me and it's the 2nd time in 4 years.

Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty will not take part in the 2025 Preakness. Sovereignty's trainer, Bill Mott, said the horse will skip the race to focus on the Belmont Stakes. Sovereignty is the second horse in the past four years to win the Kentucky Derby, but skip the Preakness Stakes.2 days ago

Too much money in horse sperm to risk an injury or bad race. It'll lower his value

Pimlico is a speed favoring track which does not favor Sovereignty at all . Plus, with Belmont Park being closed until at least fall 2026 for renovations, it's not a true Triple Crown anyways. So I get Sovereignty's connections skipping the Preakness.

I'm taking a shot on #6 River Thames in the Preakness today. He only got beat a neck by Sovereignty two starts back and he should get the right trip for this track forwardly placed stalking on the outside. If Journalism beats me at 4/5ish, tip of the cap. I am a little surprised they're running Journalism back in two weeks off a hard KY Derby run tbh but the connections know their horse better than I do (at least I would hope).

What an amazing comeback by Journalism.
Absolutely thrilling finish!

So, Sovereignty won the Belmont, and no one, including myself, posted in this thread.

****ing dumb as hell Sovereignty didn't run the Preakness. If we have to space out the Triple Crown further to make sure the best horses run so be it, but this year was so dumb

So you are cool with the KY derby winner not running the Preakness?

It’s beyond lame but not as lame as making it easier to win the TC. Horse racing’s basically a pump n dump internet stock now, and they still can’t break the Derby record.

The TC is hard to win for a reason. I don't like it when the Derby winner doesn't run all 3 races, but that's part of why winning the TC is so special.

Plus I have a confession. I've been betting the ponies since the early 1990s. Was at the OTB yesterday and just learned that the color of the horse number is based on their pole position and is consistent across all tracks. How I never noticed that before is beyond me. Boy did I feel stupid.

Nobody watching the Derby?

The big ass Great White just threw his jockey off right before loading, so he's scratched and they're unloading the other horses.

eta: good lord! What a finish!

From worst (DFL) to first!

that was a fun race Tom

cool seeing the losing brother dap the winning brother right after the finish line

had never seen that before w Great White (although i don't watch much or know much about horse racing)

I'm only a casual fan, but I've never seen anything exactly like that. The jockey was very lucky that big SOB didn't roll over on him. I was hoping to see Great White run to see how a horse that big could compete.

Fun finish!

From my view Great White looked fine and seemed ready to run. But with PETA ready to pounce on anything going wrong on the biggest stage of American thoroughbred racing, no way the starter/vets are letting him race. 30 years go and he probably starts.

Great White's jockey was visibly not happy with the decision.

Looks like the 8th time a horse has gone from last to first in the KY Derby

Hell of a run

depends on your search engine filter settings

If a horse walks funny HISA will scratch a horse so great white flipping left no doubt they were going to scratch him.

And Golden Tempo is sitting out for the Preakness.

For the second year in a row, the Kentucky Derby winner is sitting out for the Preakness.

Yeah, they have to change the Preakness date. I actually get it, they don't want the KY Derby winner stressing out just 2 weeks after the KY Derby.

Not only is Golden Tempo not running the Preakness there are reports that none of the 19 derby runners will run in the Preakness.

I get that you want to best horses to run in the Preakness (and belmont), but pushing the race back a week or two just lessons the accomplishment of having a triple crown. The triple crown is hard to win in part because it is a grueling back to back to back race schedule so any triple crown winner after a potential push back would not be as impressive IMO.

I have an exacta ticket with Golden Tempo and a scratched horse. But it's with Golden Tempo to place. Is the ticket a no-bet because of the scratched horse or a loser because GT didn't run second? I"m guessing no-bet.

I still never have hit or known anyone who hit the Derby exacta in almost 50 years of it.

It is a no bet.

My cousin (who was in my box during the race) hit the exacta this year. She liked the horse who came in 2nd and she asked my mom who she liked and my mom said golden tempo so my cousin did an exacta box.

You don’t know her so you can still say you don’t know anyone who has, but just thought I’d add that tidbit since I was answering your no bet question.

the glory of the triple crown has always been beating the best 3YOs at 3 different tracks and distances in the 3 biggest 3YO races in the country

really don't think adding time between races to support horse longevity detracts from that glory at all.

that none of the derby horses will run in the preakness only supports adding time between for the TC... if you did get a mad trainer deciding to chase the crown these days, one could easily point to the lack of competition in the preakness and say it wasn't quite the accomplishment it used to be

Ditto against that "it's harder if they don't get any rest" stuff. It isn't as safe as if you spread it out. Trying to identify the best horses, not see if they can keep from breaking down. It's always been a problem. And Churchill buying the Preakness recently is going to solve it.

They all get the same amount of rest between the TC races. They're being measured against the current field, not history. If they all have more rest between races, it's win/win.
