I agree with thisWhen I call the river & guy says ‘you’re good’ I immediately flip the cards. When I know I’m good, I flip them quickly. Not worried about gathering info. But when it plays out & I have a mediocre hand, I wait - if I’m beat, I want to fold. The situation where a reg was pissed (I think, who knows he might not have given it a second thought) but villain was driving

You wouldn't be out of line asking the dealer what the rule is in that room, if you're unsure and your opponent hesitates. A quick look at the dealer and asking, "who shows first?" or similar isn't holding up the game too much, and shouldn't be perceived as scummy.

I think many people overestimate the value of knowing an opponent's hole cards when they would otherwise muck without showing. I'm more concerned about protecting that info in situations where I'd prefer an observant reg not see that I'm capable of making an unexpected play.

Like, I don't care that you turned your offsuit AX combo with the nut flush blocker into a bluff on a three-flush run-out. I'm more interested in taking note when you don't go for thin value, or don't bluff in a spot where you should know your opponent is capped and you have no SDV.

The difference is that if I'm OOP and you're IP, and you don't immediately show, I'm either going to drag the pot with whatever garbage I show, and I can deduce how weak you were when you muck after seeing my cards (you didn't bluff), or I'm going to see your hand when you turn it over to show the winner (you didn't go for thin value). I don't need to be coy about rolling my hand over when I'm OOP. Either way, I'll learn something, even if I don't see your exact holding.

Conversely, if you bet and I make a light call, there's no reason to hesitate to show your hand if you were betting thin or you turned SDV into a bluff, but are now worried I may have you beat and you don't want to feel embarrassed. You got called. Show your hand or muck. Don't hold the game up, hoping I'll show mine before you show yours.
