A thread for unboxing AI
The rapid progression of AI chatbots made me think that we need a thread devoted to a discussion of the impact that AI i
Lol, the em dash thing really bothers me too because I actually liked using them. Now, I find myself purposely not doing so to avoid the association.
i didn't mind because even in my writing career i saw no need and just used single hyphens

I wondered earlier in the thread whether you were merely a troll or are actually this stupid. Or both. it literally has every hallmark
i'm probably closer to this than others as i interact with llms about 6+ hours a day, you very quickly start noticing patterns, where they tend to repeatedly land on the same kind of phrasing - it's actually been really good for me because in my quest to better understand their unique communication styles, i've been forced to get better aquainted with more formal writing convententions just so i can better describe and name llm style
It has the hallmarks and the level of rhetorical sophistication is remarkable for anything typed out in a forum. People don't write like that. Even when they try to.

Stylistically, I agree that the post is atypical for this sort of forum. But if the average reader finds that post to have a "remarkable" level of rhetorical sophistication, then we have truly lost our way when it comes to the art of argument.

To be clear I'm not talking about the overall argument but the individual sentences. Idk if that was clear.
YIKES.
These things are known to consistently flatter the unimaginative rubes who use them. Is that why you are confident enough to routinely talk about your "writing career" despite the fact that you're a deeply shitty writer?
Which revolting abomination of humanity who deserves to be imprisoned for the rest of their natural life created the chatbot that you prefer? Elon? Altman? Some other billionaire pedophile of whom I'm unaware?
This kind of rhetoric, encoded in threes. Always threes.

Look at the rhetorical structure. Without, without, without. VERY strong. Systematic enumeration of the thesis sentence. There's a thesis sentence.
When I say rhetoric I am talking about rhetorical devices like this repetition of without that reads like Dickens.

This.
There's nothing overly sophisticated and/or verbose about that post. All of the Ricks of the world who think otherwise should pick up a book or two.
I'm cracking up at jish talking about how he hates to use em dashes because LLM's use them frequently. You got language-cucked by some robot that was created by a ketamine-addled, autistic, homeless man's Tony Stark. That's rough!
I don't see it, and I'm good at picking up textual cues. It also seems to be such a standard sentiment, that it is hard to see why it should not come naturally to a human writer.
I also struggle to see how LLMs are "thesis-like". LLM-generated text is mostly **** and when trying to fabricate arguments, the output of LLMS lean heavily into prose and form over function.
Which makes sense, form and prose is universal, function is specific. The dataset for the former is thus far greater than for the latter.
I'll take your word for it. I confess that I've never attempted to generate a response from an LLM in that sort of polemical style.
they do what are asked, when you ask how to rewire your hot tub it emulates an instruction manual, when you ask about best soup dumplings in flushing it's going to emulate timeout, which is the variety i'm sure you're querying, if you ask for help with a tweet it'll throw in emojis, if help with a resume it'll throw in all the jargon it can possibly think of
when you ask it to enter a 2p2 debate it's going to channel cicero
It has the hallmarks and the level of rhetorical sophistication is remarkable for anything typed out in a forum. People don't write like that. Even when they try to.
the best part of it all is his defense that he didn't use an llm was also written by an llm as well, but he manually inserted an obvious typo to try to make it look like he's a real boy
and tellingly, the defense was llm-written too - it's the response they always give when accused. you see, an llm doesn't think of itself as an llm, it doesn't think at all, it's just mirroring prestige writing. so when you hand it the accusation and ask how to respond, it usually won't even register that it was the author - it just sees good writing and goes "wow this is great, exactly the kind of thing i'd try to emulate, it's a shame people accuse you when you're clearly just this talented." so it doubles down on talent. which is precisely what the response he gave us
This post is so patently absurd that the only proper response is the obvious point that I don’t need anyone to write anything for me…and to then make the follow-on point that it’s telling that you simply cannot imagine being able to actually craft a written argument without the use of AI. This should be fun, however. Please make your case, Sherlock, for why my
even threw in an intentional typo and stripped the em dashes to make it look real lol
we see it played out countless times on quora - someone writes an obviously ai generated answer, someone in the comments calls it out, you get a response exactly like that above, because that's the answer all llms come up with when tasked with explaining away obvious llm writing - they have no response other than well it's perfect writing so they defend the perfect writing instead and try to then make it about "i guess i'm just better than you"
because... and this is the important part, an llm is not trying to write like an llm, they are doing their best to emulate a real human, so to them that is how humans write, if they were more capable, their writing would be indistinguishable, so when tasked to defend against correct accusations of its authorship it genuinely has no idea what to predict simply because if it knew what separated a human from an llm in the first place, it would not have written like an llm - so every dang time it responds with "what do you mean, that's not an llm issue, that's an amazingly crafted answer any human would write, the guy must not understand what good writing looks like"

This is ridiculously common among people who can write. The rule of threes extends beyond comedy. You don't need to be an artificially intelligent creation of one of the master-of-the-universe pedophiles to write in such a manner.

That's what I was sort of going for here, probably not too successfully. I just went for statement, emphasis, more emphasis.

Obviously not. I am aware of these devices and use them in my writing.
How did we get to pedophiles? The ones I've seen can't even spell.

You do seem to have some sort of obsession/fascination with pedophiles, both in your previous incarnation and in this one.

It does the same flattery routine when it sees awful writing, too. If you disagree, copy and paste any random passage within one of your incredibly haughty and judgmental posts and watch what happens.
lol indeed. Everything is computer, huh? Paranoid-ass weirdo.

it's really hard for me to put it into words, but if you spend enough time reading ai outputs, you can't unsee the patterns and common repetition of framing
the honest answer is
it's worth dwelling/noting
navigating the landscape
sitting with the discomfort
here is where it gets interesting
not just x, also y (tons of x/y comparisons)
three comma/sentence beats
and perhaps that is the point
series of brief sentences a la i came i saw i conquered, usually in 3s
the takeaway is simple

I'm sure you do. That's typical work for non-creative STEM lords. Man, you types are gonna be even more insufferable once your minds are fully consumed by your precious LLMs.

There's this guy called Elon Musk. He created one of the most prominent of the evil chatbots, which he named Grok, as he's a massive dork. He associated with known pedophile Jeffery Epstein, although the common belief is that Elon was too uncool and too much of a snitch to get invited to Epstein's Pedophile Island. Look him up.
For the rest, "pedophile" is more of a catch-all term for the billionaires that are destroying the planet. They may or may not literally rape children in their off time. You got me there, I suppose.
forgot this one
x, and the reason for x is worth understanding

You may want to reconsider your choice of catch-all term, considering that repeated use of this specific one in relation to another poster caught you a perma ban last time. Then again, you don't really strike me as someone who is too quick to learn from mistakes, either or your own or others', handily explaining your love for and rose-tinted view of communism.
