I have a $ freeroll from a friend because I tipped him off to Spurs preseason. He took Wemby Finals MVP +6500 back then.
but I honestly dont care if i win that extra money, it'd be really cool for the Knicks to win. It would be amazing for the city of New York. It'd be like a mini-heaven on Earth in the 5 boroughs. And if they lose the series, I'd be really happy for Wemby too.
so maybe it actually isn't about winning the most money, maybe it's about the story and intrigue of the NBA Finals played out on a hardwood like ballet of the brain.
Knicks sweep is very much on the table. What's the line on that? The Spurs are kind of on the ropes of getting swept right now. I know they have a lot of heart, a ton of it, but if they go into the Garden down 2-0, we will find out if they left their heart in OKC. It was a super massive orgasm win there, and they celebrated like it was the title, not that they discounted the Knicks, not at all, but the intensity of the celebration was way more finals like than semi-finals. They now have to recover instantly, or else.
Was trying to come up with some examples of such a celebration after the semis. Any sport. Hmm.
Shortly after Rick Pitino left UK, having built that program back into a dynasty, he was at Louisville and in a press conference before the start of the NCAA tournament he was discussing teams that, his words, "have something special going on." When Rick Pitino uses that kind of language, it is to be listened to. He didn't just mean a great team, he was going to the next level beyond that ... something intangible and way beyond the sum of the parts. Specifically he was addressing the Illinois team that he ultimately met in the Final Four that year, and was mauled by. The Cards had a mega talented guard named Francisco Garcia, kind of in the George Gervin mold, 6'7", and in that game he kind of quit. He didn't want to play against Deron Williams and Luther Head when he got a taste of it. (I learned later that Williams was an all-state wrestler, and of course later became an NBA All-Star). But the point is there was something sick next-level about how they influenced the game, even apart from statistics per se, and Pitino was calling it out.
That Illini team nearly went undefeated, losing only the regular season finale by one point, until the NCAA final to UNC, taking them to the last seconds again in an uncanny way. They had two guards a bit like Brunson, and it was just beyond the norm trying to beat them.
So the point is this "something special going on" idea. The Spurs had it against the Thunder ... it was real, tangible, and going to show itself. The Knicks also have it, and the Thunder are now in the aftermath of a super peak series. Losing Game 1 is no surprise. But it's more of a "situation" than that, the expected Game 1 loss after an epic advance. I remember Jordan's first title ... they finally, finally, finally got by the Pistons, and then they lost Game 1 of the finals. It was poignant, dramatic. This spot is dramatic too. Stay tuned.

I finally got 82-0, with Russ, Maravich, Tatum, Pao Gasol, and 1960s Wilt. I suspect that 1960s Wilt is by far the key to 82-0.
