A Mouse Goes to Vegas
It's been 12 years since I've played poker in Vegas. A world away, a global pandemic, and more than a decade without vis
Yeah, I think that's the spot I was thinking of (at the top of the stairs). I guess I had it as further back. As I wrote, it's been a few years.
Updates from the tables.
Day 2: Played 7 hrs of Big O. Got crushed the whole session. Lots of low cards when I had highs. Lots of 2-3x high boards when I had lows. Couldn't hit draws when I had them, couldn't catch clean while I was ahead. In an attempt to run the line between good content and bad etiquette, I will try to summarize my session without veering too far into bad beat story territory:
- Quartered bluffing w nut low (on me I guess, they never fold & I should know it).
- Scooped in a 2k+ pot getting it in as the scooper-to-be on the turn (I had a set, he had a low draw + flush draw + gutter - my boat cards) when he catches the gutter.
- Quartered betting the whole way, flopping mirror, turning broadway, vs someone who peeled the broadway gutterball with me (I guess if he turned set of kings it would have been good too, 6 outs) then rivered a bad low (think we got it in on the turn, not sure if I overplayed it or if I have to play hard here to force out the low-only draws? I thought it was okay since I have scoop outs with my 3 pair vs other broadways... opinions welcome!).
- Scooped flopping the 2-nut low + FD + OESD, brick everything and counterfeit my low on the river. Quartered getting it in with nut low + top 2 + 3 flush blockers but he gets there with the flush anyway.
-2375. Ugh.
Day 3: Started at 2/5. Sat at the worst table I've been at that I can remember. There were 2 fish and 5 solid recs/pros (plus me, 8 handed table). Whole table is dead silent. No limped pots. One kid is playing at least 2 tables on his phone while he's at the table and 3-bet 3 times in the first two orbits I was there.
I got 3-bet 3 times by the player immediately to my left in my first two downs (he didn't enter any other pots). He was a quiet, middle aged Japanese man. The third time after I opened UTG w 77. Before I mucked I looked at him and said "How many times are you going to 3-bet me?" He laughed. "I'm under the gun, you're supposed to respect that raise!" He laughed again and said "But I have a good hand! I have to play!" I said "I've only played like three hands since I got to this table!" He laughed again and I mucked.
The next time I opened a pot it was AQo UTG+1 and he 3b me again 15 -> 75 and I jammed for 320. He snaps me off... (eyeroll). Flop comes 752, turn 7, river 3. I sigh and say "I missed" and table my hand because what could he possibly have that I beat here. He doesn't say anything and picks up his cards to stare at them. He looks at the board, back at his cards and says "It's enough" and mucks!
He didn't 3b me again in the next hour and I joked with him he needed someone else to pick on now (3b another new player several times lol). One of the fish left the table and the seat got filled by another solid player. Okay, time to get back on the Big O lists again, apparently. Left that table +162 after 2 hrs.
Rest of the night was Big O:
- Overplayed a hand and doubled up a fish when I flopped the top wrap vs his bottom straight + set + gball nut straight + flush draw. We both turn the nut straight and get it in (I have the straight redraws) and he rivers both the boat AND the straight flush (facepalm)
- In a bomb pot I have a lock high + A2 nut low. Get it all in on the turn 3k+ pot with a villain who has A23 (dead for high). He hits an A on the river to escape with half instead of a quarter.
- I win a few pots along the way when I finally don't get run down, but then get quartered in 3 pots, one with a nut low + FD, one with nut low + 2 flush draws, one as a 62/38 favorite
Finish the session -250 after 6.25 hrs, -88 for the night
Still no wins, but it looks like the bleeding might possibly be stopping?
Looks like there is a back door (that's what she said!) to the 'Shoe, per this screen grab from a vlogger... Up the stairs to get to an area behind where the teevee tables were last year I guess. Or thru the doors to walk under the WSOP back to the 'Shoe (in the AC).
I think this area is closed off currently (first floor level). I will double check. From the inside it looked like those doors are not allowed for normal use. Maybe they will open it later?
That is the right exit in the picture from basement level/food court.
When I map Ellis Island to Johnny Rockets with Google, it has me walking to the front of the casino (LOL past the uber/lyft door, even) and back to the food court which is way out of the way, and clocks in at 15 minutes. I expect it to be well under 10 min to the door of the food court from Ellis Island, depending on the light on Flamingo.

I think the maps are generated by the google cars with the gizmo on the roof. They don't drive inside the casinos.
