The NHL Thread
For the 5 of us who post NHL stuff, here you go. Officially the season starts Tuesday October 11, although there were tw
random news:
- bruins retiring bergeron's #37
- johnny toews retiring. i assume chicago will do something for him as well
- pierre-edouard bellemare retiring after 700 games, most by a french-born player
Lol Babcock cleared and lol Oilers to help with the latest lol Leafs if Edmonton does hire him.
The Leafs have just aquired Darren Raddysh from Tampa, finalizing the return and details.
At least 2 players besides Nurse not returning to Oilers.
8 years at age 28 is a mistake by the team for almost any player, and Raddysh is not the exception. I forget where I saw it but someone commented the Leafs are just about to enter the four years of overpaying a declining O'Reilly (32yrs old)+McCabe (32yrs old)+Tanev (36yrs old), and just as those three expire, they can look forward to overpaying a declining Raddysh for four years starting with...his 32nd birthday. Pretty direct way to put it.
He’s 30, heading into his age 31 season. I did see that year 2 will be more like $6.8 mil under current #s with the continued cap increase.
Toronto went for it. At least they only had to send a 5th.
Ya way too long. Should have been shorter and things are good than a extension.
he should be a major upgrade over rielly anyway, in all facets of the game
if rielly stays, move him to a 3rc pairing/2nd ppqb role
money might be fine given the cap seems to go up 5-10% every year
anyone have the long-term cap projections?

2026-27: $104,000,000 (Upper Limit) | $76,900,000 (Floor)
2027-28: $113,500,000 (Upper Limit) | $83,900,000 (Floor)
2028-29: $123,000,000 (Estimated Upper Limit)
The money is fine as long as other teams have equally inefficient contracts. The problem is if you get a few teams that don't, they kind of just kill you because they have four good lines, three good pairings, and a stud goalie, while you're trying to hide a 35 year old on your second or third pair.

My mistake, I was looking at Taylor Raddysh not Darren.
In 2029-2030, when McKenna is reaching his prime and Matthews is likely starting to decline if he hasn't moved on, the Leafs will be spending 25M/year on four defencemen with an average age of 36.5. That...does not seem optimal.
Raddysh had a great season after being put in a tough spot with Hedman out. That said you give a contract like that if you are in a current cup window and deal with the contract later. I don't see that from a team that missed the playoffs, with a new coach and GM, and figuring a team like Florida will be on the way back next year too.
if you only have a few bad contracts, it's usually not that hard to unload them when the time comes, if you're still in a competitive window (and lets be real, it's not like the laffs are perma contenders). yeah i wouldn't load up on these kind of contracts, but a few is ok. probably a good gamble for them at this point
Iβd expect Raddysh to have a much worse year next year than he had this year. That contract could look horrific faster than you think. But, weβll see.

This! $20.8 million max salary, also as of September, 8 year deals are not allowed anymore and TSN getting excited as Raddysh is good friends with Mcdavid.

They don't have their next two firsts, but two superstar forwards who should be in their primes. They were terrible last year. Matthews doesn't have much term on his contract. All this means that you've got to do something, and given that blowing it up and starting over isn't really available to them due to lack of pics, going for is the only option. It's a desperate move and I doubt the Leafs cab improve the team enough for it to work, but if it doesn't you're only wasting cap in what would be non-competetive years anyway.
[Strickland] Would think now that the final is wrapped up, we are headed towards a resolution with Babcock and the Oilers. Hearing, among other things, part of the NHL’s investigation includes a situation that involved Patrik Laine.
(laine apparently entered the league's mental health program just a few months after babcock was hired)
Daniel Winnik on Mike Babcock "He's the only guy that has ever made me hate hockey"
aaron ward says babcock tried to get him fired from tsn, and adds that he even messed with paul kariya
(he was incredulous about the latter, implying that kariya is as nice a guy as you'd imagine)
i like how every day there's new stories about what a complete and utter piece of filth this freak is. really, as a loiler hater i couldn't be happier. keep it coming

Between these two statements was the correct answer instead of Raddysh.
You trade Matthews for as many future assets as you can get and start the rebuild.
Adding Raddysh does not even come close to raising the potential of this Maple Leaf team into the championship level.
Don't think MLSE is ready for a rebuild. They are a cash cow that wants to be competitive. Also don't think Chayka career trajectory can go through a rebuild. Basically career ending for him, unless MLSE told him rebuild for 3 years, be competitive in 2030 or get the boot.
In other words, if he starts a rebuild, they are junk for a few years and he's canned, probably not getting another job.
You can argue the two firsts are sunk cost and Matthews/Nylander represent their best assets to sort if make up for it, but tanking without your first has to be the worst and doing it two years in a row is diabolical. If I was a Leafs fan, even if I'm convinced it's the best way to go, I'd just check out completely for those two seasons.
mlse are like the morans running the canucks, reality is gonna have to drag them kicking and screaming into a rebuild. a 2nd round playoff exit is basically the same as losing the final money-wise, and winning a cup is really hard and takes luck. so who cares, run matthews, nylander, mckenna, raddysh, etc out there and stack the cash
i'm sure they also don't realize that matthews is already past his prime. that's part of it too. chayka might, but what he thinks doesn't really matter here.
not to mention how toronto just won the calder cup. 100000000% chance these donks think all those ahlers are about to be nhl superstars
Rip Oilers.
