A Clueless NL Noob Reaches 1000 Hours of Live 1/3 NL
Hi, I’m gobbledygeek! I’ve just reached 1000 hours of live 1/3 NL!
FWIW, I'm actually semi-embarrassed to admit that it is only fairly recently where I've learned to quit better.
Pre 2024, I only got in one poker session a week. And because it was going to be a week+ before my next poker session, I always felt I had to get in my time at the table, almost no matter what. So my quitting technique was simple: I quit at 9:30pm so I could make the 10:00pm wife-imposed curfew (a very fair and reasonable curfew). The game conditions had no factor in my quitting technique, only the clock on the wall did.
But starting in 2024 I began putting in 2 poker sessions a week, and I put in my own curfew of quitting by 6:30pm so I could make it home by 7:00pm to cook and have dinner with the wife (life balance is key regarding poker, imo). But because I was now playing twice a week, and thus knew I'd be at the table again in just a few days, I no longer felt compelled to always play to that 6:30pm limit. So, if table conditions ain't great for me (which for me is mostly deep against a bunch of deep difficult stacks), I now simply quit earlier than my 6:30pm limit.
So it's actually only recently where I've actually begun quitting when conditions aren't good for me, whereas before I just ~always played it out to the pre-allotted time.

I've had a two buy-in stop loss for a looooong time. I'm really bad at chasing losses -- my biggest losing sessions are also my longest sessions.

At my small 67bb BI, and with the aim often to get in stacks ASAP, I think a 2 BI stop loss is too small for me. I actually don't have a BI stop loss, but using my super tight method in my game and with my sessions now only averaging ~5 hours, I don't get on that 3rd BI very often (out of 5 BIs that I bring), although it does happen (with me shipping 2.75 BI loss a few sessions ago which is my largest loss in 20 months).
