** World Cup 2026 - USA, Canada, Mexico Thread **
Saw no thread was active yet while it starts tomorrow so I'd gave it a go
No real time for an extensive write-up but lets
Belgium MAD over belogun getting in, I presume it's mostly because their practices are basically worthless due to US having a different strategy on offense with him in vs out. I for one do not believe any additional corruption happened to make that a thing it was probably just potus saying like dude we paid a lot for this and fifa just going ok.
Seeing a nearly full entire stadium in Oslo (wtf at sitting in the upper deck when you can't see the screen) going nuts is what this event is all about though.

sure, dude
Trump Asked FIFA to Review Balogunβs Suspension. He Is Now Eligible to Play. - The New York Times
[Ben Jacobs] The White House made a direct call to FIFA to ask Gianni Infantino to review Folarin Balogunβs red card.
Kick off an hr delayed, rip

It's because of a few things:
- Yeah they've been practicing as if he isn't going to play
- It's ridiculous that a red card can be overturned like this and not even rescinded, just suspending the one match ban to a game that doesn't matter
- It's unbelievably corrupt in a more blatant way than FIFA have done outside of awarding the WC to Qatar/Saudi Arabia

That is quite literally corruption
Why is there a delay if people are in the stands and the broadcasters are in the stadium? Unless there is lightning, ****ing play ball. It's summer.
Standard. Perhaps the 803rd most corrupt thing FIFA has done in the whole process since NAβs initial bid.
Obv Balogun isn't Messi so Balo got sent off when Messi didn't. But if we're going to all be okay with that then we need to be okay with the fact that if FIFA clears a red for a mediocre player like Penaldo then Balo, a far superior player, deserves the same.
Y'all act like FIFA suspending red card bans is an absolutely unheard of and completely unprecedented level of corruption, except:
- MoisΓ©s Caicedo had his one-match ban for a red card (in this case, as 2nd yellow) in the final CONMEBOL WC qualifier waived outright so he would be eligible to play in Equador's World Cup opener.
- Same thing for Argentina NicolΓ‘s Otamendi, who received a direct red card in that same match.
- Cristiano Ronaldo actually had his THREE MATCH RED CARD BAN reduced by two games so he could play in the world cup.
Some people's righteous indignation and allegations of "unbelievable corruption in a more blatant way than FIFA have ever done!!" (- TheGramuel) seems juuuuuuust a tiny bit selective.
For example:
72off: "most rigged world cup oat ainec usa#1"
Other random posters: "Except Messi, Ronaldo, Caicedo, Otamendi all got the same or very similar treatment from FIFA"
72off "look, the stars of the game like messi, rapenaldo, and the labald jorms of soccer are always gonna get special treatment. just the way it is" (that's a direct quote)
Having said that, for this to be the ruling, it should ABSOLUTELY have happened within 24 hours of the match. Waiting until one day before the next match is the only part that is truly unfair to Belgium.
- It's ridiculous that a red card can be overturned like this and not even rescinded, just suspending the one match ban to a game that doesn't matter
Perhaps teams and fans should familiarize themselves with the Disciplinary Code as this is clearly laid out in Article 27.
Don't recall people having issue with this before, but maybe they did. If there were cries to redraft the Disciplinary Code, then these complaints have merit.

I think you'll find loads of people had a problem with Ronaldo's red card suspension being pushed back a year so he could play the first two games of the world cup.
Also, even if they're using a codified Article 27 to justify it but it's LOL imo and I don't agree with it's use here.
If it's a red card then it's a red card and the suspension should be immediate, otherwise it allows things like this to happen, exactly like Sinner getting his suspension in tennis conveniently between the majors.

There should be a proper process for appealing/rescinding red cards at FIFA tournaments. If there had been then this wouldn't have looked so bad.
I don't know why they don't have one but there must be a reason.
Build the wall.
we are all Mexicans tonight/tomorrow morning
1hr delay has only meant more drink + more money bet on the game, we move.
holy Pickford
jeeebus
This stadium is always absolutely off the charts. Proper bucket list item.
Anthony Gordon's recovered since singing God Save The Queen.
