Sorry, I understand it now. I haven’t officially
started the trip report yet, have been busy
with the events and not finding the time.

The two references have a relevance to the story.

A good day was had at ULTRA. Hopefully the Grant-DogFace run good continues.

SUMMER TRIP DAY ONE (6/6/26)

I wake up early to grab a bagel and coffee at my local spot before hauling my bag to the train stop for the ride to the airport. The flight brings our first bad seat draw of the trip in the form of a screeching infant in our general proximity. He is crying so much, he must have had his AA cracked by 27 on the river.

To help pass the time on the flight, I begin planning ahead. I formulate a plan for today's tournament. We'll start the day as a late entrant in the 1PM $250 daily deepstack at the WSOP. This is a nostalgic event for me. The 1PM $250 was actually the first tournament I ever played in Vegas, all the way back in 2018. At the time it seemed like a big, prestigious event to me. Now that I have more experience and a much bigger frame of reference, the daily deepstacks feel like the minor leagues. That doesn't mean I take the opportunity for granted. Even if I've cashed a few $1ks at the WSOP by now, I'm still not a high stakes player and I don't believe in stake shaming anyway. There's no shame in playing whatever fits your budget. It's wiser than stretching beyond your means. Small events can still be very engaging. Finally, I have a bit of a score to settle with the dailies in general and the 1PM in particular. I cashed the $200, $250, and $400 in the Rio. Since the WSOP moved across town, I'm 0-for-everything in the dailies on plenty of bullets. I've played this 1PM event at least once almost every year I've gone to the WSOP (2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025). I haven't cashed it since my rookie year in 2018. I'll give it my best effort and try to put a result on the board today. If we believe in gambler's fallacy, I am beyond due in dailies at the ParisShoe.

What can we expect from this tournament? In a low stakes event with more casual players and fewer strong regs, you're going to see more passive play in general. You're going to see more pre-flop traps with premium hands. You're going to see less bluffing on the later streets. All of which is to say that the correct strategic adjustments for an event of this nature are to make big laydowns in the face of strength, and to be especially wary of opponents activating on the turn and river. On the other hand, we can probably ratchet up the aggression and find more steal spots, as opponents aren't going to fight for the thin pots like the tougher regs in higher stakes. Opponents are going to over-fold on scary boards and rarely float. We'll go in with a glass cannon strategy, aggressive in the attack, but defensive in the face of resistance. We'll adjust from there based on reads.

I land safely and make my way to Harrah's, where I uncharacteristically plunk down an extra $25 to check in early and dump off my stuff. I am beyond excited to be here, but I can't bask in the moment too much. The clock is ticking. I race over to the Horseshoe and manage to get seated in the $250 at about 2 PM, right before level 3 begins.

We have a big decision relatively early with QQ when a MP player piles over our open and another player's flat behind for ~20k into a pot worth only 3-4k. I did not think AA and KK were likely to take this line. It felt a lot like AK. Do we want to take a massive flip in the first few levels of the tournament? Given that it's a one day event with a relatively fast pace, I elected to gamble. I made the call to put myself at risk. Our hunch is accurate and we are indeed up against AK. We win the flip. Winning flips is an important skill in tournament hold 'em. We'll prove good at it today.

We continue chipping away throughout the session, until the 30 minute dinner break is upon us. There have been some ups and downs, but we're in it with a chance midway through the day. I hit Sbarro in the food court for the first time on this trip. My former college classmate, Jeff Madsen, has just won his fifth WSOP bracelet last night in the $1.5k Dealer's Choice. Fellow UCSB alum Lon McEachern is ahead of me in line in Sbarro. Is the universe sending me signs? Is this the year of the gaucho?

I consider stopping Lon to say a quick hello, but decide to leave him in peace and instead focus on a piece of my own.

As the bubble approaches, a player spills his drink all over the table. The deck is ruined. The drenched green felt resembles the swamps of Dagobah. They had to rack us up and move us to a whole different table, much to the chagrin of the TD.

If the table is soaked, the flops are pure Tatooine. I hit a dry spell mid-way through the session, losing a few key hands. I play a strong ace-high passively against a BB caller on a raggedy flop and turn where it seems like we both bricked, letting him catch up on the river and paying off a small bet when he pairs up on the end. I suffer another setback for the opposite reason, taking an aggressive line with 88 against a UTG open from a player who seems very active. I don't always call with 88 against an EP open and I definitely don't always 3-bet it, but this time I decided to take the initiative by raising his 8k open to 22k from one seat behind. An ABC player jams from MP. UTG calls behind. Uh-oh. We know 88 is no good here, so we have to fold after putting in a third of our stack pre. This adversity puts us in the danger zone. I'm on 6BBs when the same aggro player opens again from UTG. I look down at 77. Have I learned my lesson from the 88 hand? Apparently not because I decide that 77 is too good to fold on a nub with the blinds about to devour us. A second player jams behind for slightly more. UTG makes a crying call. We are up against AK (MP) and 22 (UTG). UTG makes a set on the river, but it's no good, as we made a set on the flop. Did I mention that winning flips is an important talent in NLHE tournaments? We are good at winning flips today.

People talk a lot about TT or JJ being cursed hands. For me, 77 is the real chronic loser. I've been knocked out of countless tournaments with that hand. It never seems to win for me, so finally dragging a huge one with 77 felt like another positive omen.

We survive the bubble with a workable stack.

Players keep dropping like flies while I keep finding enough good spots to chip up. I'd love to go into more detail about HHs and strategy, but much of the night is a blur. I know that one pivotal spot came relatively late in the session when an aggro player opened in MP and I flatted with 99 from the BTN. My hand is good enough to 3-bet, but there are also merits to flatting, which we'll see in this specific runout. The board was low and raggedy, 766. Villain insta-jammed for 2x pot. I suppose it feels like a trivial call, but it's also eerily similar to my Colossus bustout hand last year when I had 88 on 775 and was pipped by 99. I tanked for a few moments to think things through. This opponent seemed aggressive. Since I did not 3-bet pre, I think he probably ruled out overpairs. If he thinks the board missed me then he can show up with all sorts of dominated value and bluffs here. His 2x pot bet did not seem to say, "I want action." Ultimately, I made the call and was shown 22, which could not catch up on the turn or river. We drag another massive pot at a critical time.

We persist through numerous minor pay jumps until we somehow find ourselves at the final table. They rack the last 10 players up and bring us over to a special little feature table, where there's actually a small rail watching the action. I expect to be a bystander as well, sitting 8th or 9th in chips with sky high blinds and little room to do anything except push-or-fold. Still, we have a seat at the table, and that's all you can really ask for.

The play at the final table is a little erratic and we notch the first few pay jumps without really even having to do anything. Being a bystander can be lucrative at a final table. Eventually I'm in the danger zone again, the shortest of the 7 remaining stacks at the table. With fewer than 10 BBs, I look down at KdTd UTG. That will have to be good enough. I rip and get called two ways. We are up against AdQd and a medium pocket pair. We hit the king for the critical suckout.

We find KQ a short time later and get pot-committed pre-flop against two shorties, spiking the K against AT and K6. The field is down to five. We're not chip leader, but we have been promoted from spectator to contender.

The Monster Stack was running in this room today, and now we have a monster stack of our own.

For the second time in my life, I am a chip millionaire.

We pick up a massive pot with QQ on a KQ755 runout against a short stack's 77 and a big stack's Kx. Soon we are down to 3 players. Then 2.

We are playing heads up for $27k, far and away the largest score of my poker career. In fact, the $8k pay ladder from 2nd to 1st would be bigger than any of my previous paltry scores. I'd love to ship this thing, but I'm the underdog. My opponent starts the HU match with approximately 2:1 chip advantage. He extends his lead with some early aggression. I'm missing boards and losing hands. This is not going well. It feels like I am destined for a swift exit. I have to internally remind myself to play with intention and not settle for 2nd. $19k for 2nd is already crazy money from a $250 entry fee, but we didn't march a hundred miles just to surrender on the final yard. I claw back into the match and win a huge one with KQ vs. Kc9c all-in pre to claim a 3:1 lead. I thought the win was imminent, but my opponent fights back and wins numerous pots in a row. Pretty soon we are back to even.

I'm not a HU specialist in any respect, but this is where my old PokerStars SNG background comes in handy. I have a lot of experience playing short-handed. Even if that experience was all the way back in 2009, much of the core logic still applies. HU poker is about aggression. It's very hard for your opponents to have hands that want to call a lot of big bets. Forget blockers or board texture. Sometimes you just have to say, "I'm winning this pot." I crank up the aggression and pick some spots to run big bluffs with zero equity. Most of my bluffs get through. I take a significant lead. My opponent has played well throughout the tournament tonight, but it's 3AM and everyone is tired. He has been drinking some cocktails. I think his energy level might be flagging. I know from earlier hands that he'll be willing to get the chips in pre-flop if given a reasonable excuse. I find AJ. I open. He 3-bets. This is the spot.

I 4-bet jam.

He calls it off, and we have another coin flip.

It's AJ vs. 22.

The flop is ugly.

I miss everything.

The turn is beautiful.

The river is clean. I shake hands with my opponent.

Tournament completed.

What I felt in this moment was not necessarily joy or euphoria, but more like disbelief. It was a surreal experience. It literally did not feel real.

I staggered over to Paris and took care of the payout arrangements. I put a few dollars in my tournament account and they cut me a check for the rest.

By the time I tracked down some food, it was light outside again. I went to sleep at 6AM and woke up at 9AM.

I would've been pleased just to start the trip with a min-cash. I would've been happy with 10th place money.

Winning the whole thing was, "Beyond fairy tale, it's inconceivable."

This feels like an appropriate ending the Nitty By Nature story, which is strange to say because I still have a full week in town.

I'll play more poker on this trip, but for now we rest, recuperate, and try to appreciate the journey that brought us here from our first 1PM $250 back in 2018....

It's time for an update from the glamorous world of the regional circuit.

REGIONAL SERIES DAY ONE (3/21/26)

I drive out to Chinook Winds on the Oregon coast to play the first three days of their poker tournament series, which will be running March 21st-29th. The purpose of this trip is twofold. It's an opportunity to get more reps playing NLHE and mixed games (there's a HORSE event on the schedule). It's also potentially a chance to grow the summer bankroll. A big score here will expand our Las Vegas options.

As far as tournament venues go, you could do a lot worse than Chinook Winds. The casino sits right on the ocean.

Can we find some buried treasure at the sea or will we be shipwrecked?

The first event on the schedule is a multi-day $300 NLHE. The maiden voyage ends in disaster after I get crippled giving a free turn card with top two on a coordinated board against what I incorrectly assumed was a stealing range based on table dynamics. I elect to launch a second ship from the docks immediately, re-entering right away for another $300. The second voyage proves more pleasant. Though my new table is a pirate galley of formidable regs from the local rooms, I run relatively pure and am eventually sitting on 80k from 22k starting at the dinner break (you get 20k chips and then an extra 2k for a trivial dealer appreciation fee). We hit some choppy waters after dinner before encountering a pivotal spot.

At 600/1200 blinds, EP player limps. Sitting on approximately 45k, we have AQo on the BTN. With extra dead money in the pot and nobody else showing aggression, I make it 3.5k. A competent, active player in the BB makes it 14k. EP folds and we have a weird decision. While AQo is not the nuts, raising from the BTN in a limped pot very much looks like a squeeze. If BB perceives our raise as a squeeze then suddenly AQo is beginning to look like one of the best hands we show up with here. I've been bullied out of a few pots already tonight and probably have a weak image. For all of these reasons, I elect to empty the cannon with the four bet jam. We fade the snap call. BB tanks for a while before making a crying fold, caught with his hand on the rum flask.

From there we sail towards the money bubble on a modest, yet seaworthy chip stack. We encounter a few stormy situations along the way. At 3k/5k blind levels, I have 60k when it folds to me on the BTN with ATo. While a case can be made for a nitty approach at this stage of the tournament, we have a great hand and are not playing for the min-cash, so we jam. Huge stack in the SB quickly calls. Uh-oh. BB folds. I expect bad news, but we are up against a dominated A8o. We fade the bad beat and hold for a crucial double. On the stone bubble, I am in the BB with AJo and 55k in my stack. Different active big stack opens from the BTN to 17k. Perhaps there's an argument for simply folding when pay jumps are flat and we can literally fold into the money, but if you're playing to win then I think you need to take this spot. I shove the AJ. Luckily the BTN folds.

Hand-for-hand play continues for a full orbit or two. Many shorties survive. Many AK vs. AK situations frustrate the players hoping for an elimination.

You need to be careful at this stage of the tournament, but people play so cagey and scared on these bubbles that it can also become open season for rampant piracy. The big stacks loot some of the easy plunder. We also find a few steal spots and grow the treasure chest back to 100k. A player finally busts and we find the first bag of 2026.

Yo-ho-ho, a pirate's life for me.

It's nearly 11PM by the time we finish bagging up. I have earned a celebration dinner, but the lines for the in-house food kiosks are long and moving at a glacial pace. The restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the casino are closed. I cross the street to Safeway and acquire this feast.

How many Michelin stars is this worth? Will it ward off scurvy?

REGIONAL SERIES DAY TWO (3/22/26)

Bagging up for a big day two is one of the best feelings in tournament poker. The dream of the monster score is alive and well. Maybe this will be my time to get lucky and run ultra deep.

90 players will return to chase the $32k up top. It's a very top-heavy payout structure. We'll need to make the final table to net a serious payday. With that in mind, we are in full run it up mode with little regard for mere survival. I'll be coming back in the bottom third of the field, sitting on approximately 16BBs. I'm likely to be all-in at some point in the first hour. I'm not a favorite to last very long today, but 1-2 doubles is all it will take to change the equation.

On the very first hand of the day, a player torches 200k chips by spazzing on the J84 flop with AJo against QQ. The BB works its way around to us. A UTG micro stack jams for slightly less than 3BB. It folds around. This is an automatic call with any two cards when we're laid such an amazing price by the pot, so I call blind. Unfortunately we squeeze 73o while UTG has 66. He doubles up.

We look down at a lot of queen-rag hands for the first two orbits. We are on just 9BBs when it folds to us in the CO with KdTd. This is a unanimous chart-approved jam. Most of the time we won't get called. When we do get called, we have pretty good equity against a lot of the calling hands.

KJo is not one of those hands. A monster stack (the beneficiary of the aforementioned AJ spew) calls us from the SB with KJ. The board brings no salvation and we are forced to unceremoniously walk the plank within the first half hour of the restart. This was not the reward I sought.

Even after making one small ladder up, we receive a paltry payout of 1.5x buy-ins, meaning we are in the underwhelming situation of cashing the tournament, yet losing money.

I'm a winner. I'm a loser. I'm a winner and a loser.

I enjoy these large field multi-day events and the flirtations with massive scores, but the huge fields that generate these gaudy payouts also make it statistically unlikely to reach the final few spots where most of that money is concentrated. Today our treasure map only led us to fool's gold.

After busting so quickly, I had a few options. I could take a quick break and try my luck in the next event, a 12PM single day $300 NLHE tournament with 30 minute levels. It would've been reasonable to play that. It was on my original schedule. I don't generally take days off during poker trips because the opportunities to fire volume are so scarce, but I slept horribly on both Friday and Saturday nights. I felt that I would have trouble sustaining my A-game deep into the night. For that reason I elected to make it a short poker day, surrender early, and conserve energy for Monday's $300 HORSE, another opportunity to expand into mixed games at a friendly price point.

REGIONAL SERIES DAY THREE (3/23)

While I still enjoy NLHE and consider it my best game by far, I want to keep learning all the games. When I planned this trip, I was most excited about the chance to get more reps in the mixed streets. I've been looking forward to this HORSE event. Will we run like Secretariat or Zippy Chippy (famously winless in 100 races)?

The answer is somewhere in the middle. I win a big hand after boating up with KQQ in stud against rolled up nines, who makes an inferior boat. I dump some back to the same player chasing half the pot with AhKdKs9d on a rag board in O8. Woops. I knew it was a tricky spot, but I thought I had a good chance at half. Top set on the river is no good. He shows me a wheel. We'll be seeing a lot of wheels today. If you've never played Stud 8 or O8, know that the wheel is always lurking.

We once again take the uncomfortable high side with KJJ in Stud 8. This time we make another boat to scoop against a combo wheel/low draw, taking us back around 1.5x starting just in time for the dinner break. 31 players will return from dinner while 40 have been forever lost at sea. 9 survivors will ultimately be paid, with $5k to the winner. $5k can buy a lot of summer poker fun. I won't complain about winning $5k, but we have a lot of work to do.

I crush a sandwich, take a stroll around the property, and admire the tranquil view before heading back to the felt.

Shortly after dinner we lose some with a 6542A low to a 5432A wheel in a weird limped pot BB vs. SB (A on the flop). 65 low should be good for half most of the time, especially with the 2 blocker to the wheel in my hand (I had 62xx), but not this time (he had 32xx). Like I said, the wheel is always lurking. Beware the wheel.

Still in O8, we find AdQhTd3s in MP and open. BB calls. Flop is As6s4h. BB checks. We bet. BB calls. Turn is the Tc. BB leads (?). We're happy to get the rest of our chips in with top two and a low draw. He has the rather unlikely TTxx. Sheeeit. The river brings another 6. We have no low and no full house, so it's off to Davy Jones' Locker for us. We are eliminated approximately 20 spots off the money.

I think I played a decent session today. There were some mistakes and probably some missed bets, but I definitely didn't punt my stack either. I gave myself a fighting chance. The pots get huge in these limit tournaments in the deep levels, and I simply couldn't find a winner after dinner.

Overall, I felt more comfortable in Stud Hi and Razz than the split pot games. I enjoyed Stud and Razz. I won some nice pots in those games. Meanwhile I felt like something of a fish in O8. It must be my worst game in the mix for now. Ironically, I was very quiet in the Hold 'Em rounds, as I was dealt a steady stream of rags in two card.

REGIONAL SERIES SUMMARY

Chinook Winds runs good events that attract an eclectic cast of characters. If you're in the PNW region, consider playing one of their series some time. I had fun and got some valuable experience. I added another meager cash to my Hendon Mob page and made a day 2 cameo. There were some positives, but the trip was still a net loser. Rather than adding numbers to the summer poker bankroll, we subtract a small sum. The loss won't affect the June trip much, but what it means is that we probably can't add any extra voyages between now and then. I had been eyeing Wynn Signature Series in April for another potential treasure hunt. Instead we're likely to keep the boat in the harbor for the next three months, appearing only in local ports. Assuming nothing noteworthy happens between now and June, this will be my final big update until summer is upon us.

For now we lick our wounds and wait for the summer schedules to drop from Wynn, Venetian, Aria, Orleans, Nugget, and MGM....

Yes I am, but hear me out. I think it will make some sense.

PROLOGUE

It's late December, 2025. I've had a rough year at the tables, driven primarily by a staggering inability to HOLD in key spots. You're always going to take some bad beats in poker, but the runbad has reached spooky levels. From January to December, this year of poker has been an endless poo sandwich. I'm beginning to feel like my life is a Twilight Zone episode. The sadistic poker gods have devised a cookbook to serve man an all-you-can-eat buffet of misery. This must be a mistake. I thought I ordered the Earl's rungood club? Instead, I'm getting toasted in a different way.

Despite the steady diet of suffering, I'm still clinging to the hopes of a late reversal. We're down to 26/137 in a $200 Venetian bounty tournament. 17 spots will be paid. Blinds are 1500/3000. I've been playing my A game, mixing things up and usually landing on the right decision. I'm sitting on a healthy 100k (4x starting) when I'm dealt the always gorgeous AA in the SB. CO opens to 6k. I pop it to 17k. BB folds. CO tank calls. Flop comes 8c6c5s. Not the best, but we're still likely to be ahead. I lead for 20k. CO rips for a covering stack. I call and am shown 99. I'm a 75% favorite to double up to 8x starting, which will give me a great platform to chase the final table payouts. Surely this is the moment where my luck changes.

6 on the turn. 7 on the river.

Bling. Blang. Blaow.

I toss my bounty chip into the middle and swiftly exit the poker room.

As I begin the medium walk from Palazzo back to Harrah's, I pass the Wizard of Oz display in the Palazzo fountains. This seems appropriate. Pink Floyd could be the soundtrack for this moment, except I can't even say I'm comfortably numb. I'm just numb, in a state of disbelief.

In the grand scheme of poker beats, losing AA vs. 99 for a pot worth maybe $1k in equity is barely notable. It might only register 0.001 Matt Afflecks on the pain scale. However, it's a bitter pill to swallow on the heels of a year filled with similar moments.

You'll understand if I breathed a sigh of relief on New Year's Eve when the ball finally dropped and I could finally flip the page on this cursed year. Goodbye 2025. I'd like to say it was fun, but it wasn't really. I don't know exactly what 2026 holds. I just know it can't be much worse in terms of runouts and poker variance.

NEW YEAR, NEW ME

I'm not a high roller and my living expenses have increased considerably in the last couple years, so the double whammy of my extended runbad is that it cramps my already limited ability to make poker trips and fire tournaments. I can't afford to be as profligate as I could in previous years. I still have confidence at the table, but I can't stomach much downside exposure. On the other hand, summer poker has become an annual highlight since I first started playing live again in 2018. The prospect of skipping it is almost inconceivable. I'd run through a brick wall to make it back to Vegas, or at least a wall of bricked flops.

In the past few years, I've booked and re-booked my summer trips multiple times, often changing my mind and switching my dates around up until the last minute. I decided to do things differently for 2026. I booked my summer trip back in December. Rather than waiting on the schedule and building a trip around specific events, I just picked the dates and rates that were most favorable. I booked 6/14-6/22, for a total of eight nights. The rate was friendly and this is a good time for me to travel, as I have no work conflicts.

I intend to go out to Vegas in June and cobble together some type of schedule. My summer TRs have become very same-y the last few years, but this one may have a decidedly different flavor. It may be a low roller's guide to summer tournament poker, a window into blasting buy-ins on a tight budget. It may entail a steady diet of WSOP daily deepstacks and other options in the thrifty price range, a return to my 2018 roots when $365 was the biggest buy-in I played all year. In the subsequent years I moved up stakes and found several cashes at the $1k+ level. I sat with some of the best MTT players on the planet, but I'm not too proud to drop back down and battle the rabble.

After taking eight Vegas trips in 2024 and five in 2025, my expectation was that this June trip might be my sole foray into the desert for 2026. However, that doesn't mean I won't be playing any poker in the meantime. My plan was to stay sharp through semi-regular trips to the local room and some cheap regional events.

My first scheduled tune-up was to come in a $125 evening bounty event in the local room earlier in February. As the 7PM start time approached, I hemmed and hawed. 'Should I drive out there tonight? Do I really feel like playing? Should I wait until next weekend?' Nah, screw it. This is when you planned to play, so just play. I got in my car and made the short drive.

Excellent choice. I ran very hot in the tournament. My local room has a passionate population of players, but it's objectively softer than a typical Vegas field. You see more goofy play and baffling errors. While I was getting dealt a steady diet of monster hands, other people were dumping and making big mistakes. Soon the 33 entry field was down to the 5 paid spots. From there I eventually got down to the HU, where I began with approximately a 1-to-4 chip deficit. After a 30 minute back-and-forth, we got the chips in 99 vs. AQ. If I could win this flip, I'd take the chip lead. I did not win the flip. I took second place for $420 in cash and $150 in bounties (3x$50), for a net profit of $445.

It wasn't a win, but it felt like one. 2nd place was a great outcome and the extended HU session was actually the most HU poker I've ever gotten to play live. All of my Vegas tournament "wins" have come in the form of chops. Neither my opponent nor myself mentioned a chop this time around. We played for all the marbles. Although I did not win all the marbles, 445 is still a lot of marbles.

As it turns out, I have a three day weekend coming up. The price for Vegas flights and a couple nights in a hotel is...almost exactly $445. A smarter man than myself might pocket this $445 and roll it into the summer poker budget, but momma didn't raise no folder. If you think about it, even the nittiest person in the poker room must have some gamble in them or they wouldn't be playing at all. I hope the poker gods will honor my mild recklessness with a serving of favorable variance.

So there you have it. That's the reason why I'm posting a WSOP TR in February. I'm heading out to Vegas next weekend for a "free" trip to get in some extra reps against the regs. The results of this trip will ultimately influence my summer plans. With that being the case, I thought I'd kickstart the summer TR with a few days of bonus content.

I'll be heading out to the desert early-ish on 2/28. I will probably be returning late-ish on 3/2, though there's some possibility to extend if I sun run.
