Settle an argument about A8 suited with 9BB.
Just for the info Im a barely part time rec (30-40 $100-$500 BI live tourneys the last 2 years) that has just started taken tourneys more seriously lately.
$100 daily still a mile away from the money. Pretty tight passive table.
Villain is first to act and makes it 2X. Its the only size he has used to raised all day if he's first to open regardless of what position he's in. His preflop raised hands that has got to showdown so far is AA, A6 suited, 1010, KJ, KQ. Im next to act with 9BB and A8 of spades. Whats my play? Buddy I talk hands with sometimes says it was played wrong. Thanks.

Ugh, that's really close. It's definitely either a fold or shove; I'm just not sure which. ATs I think is an easy shove. ATo might be, in which case A8s is probably good enough too.
How many of these opens have been from early position? If he's really tight up front I'd pass. If his range is any wider than GTO I'd shove. It's close if he's opening correctly. How deep is he?
You haven't mentioned his and your position. He at UTG+1 and you at UTG+2 is vastly different from him at BTN and you at SB.
Pretty easy shove at late positions and marginal at early positions.
edit: opps see you mentioned he is UTG. That's a marginal spot
Snap fold

His 2 early position raises were the 1010 and the KQ.

Ended up shoving all in. My buddy in convinced its a fold, my thought is its a fold or shove but close enough its not a big leak either way, The only real leak would be calling.
It's an easy fold tbh.
You aren't doing great against his range, and there are other players behind you that are allowed to wake up with hands. If we were button, it might be ok, but I'd still fold.
A quick look at an equity calculator shows us 46.4% vs a top 20% range.
If no one else calls, we are doing well enough vs Villain's range that this is ok. However, as mentioned above there are still a bunch of people who can wake up with hands.
One further point is that you want to look for spots where you have fold equity; here you don't. Even after paying your blinds, you still might find a better spot either as a first in jam, or a better hand or weaker Villain range.
Unless you have info utg is looser than optimal ATs 77+ is threshold shove in your spot
I would fold assuming you were also in early position, which is the way I'm reading your post. Shoving is marginal against the UTG opener, but you also have to worry about all the other players at the table potentially waking up with hands. If you were in the blinds facing an UTG open after the rest of the table had already folded, then there would be more merit in shoving.
