** World Cup 2026 - USA, Canada, Mexico Thread **
Saw no thread was active yet while it starts tomorrow so I'd gave it a go
No real time for an extensive write-up but lets
Anyway, Greece won the Euros somewhat recently, and no one fancied them going into the tournament.
It would be like current Ecuador, or Paraguay randomly haramballing their way to the World Cup finals and winning it. Since that's never come close to happening, I don't think I can buy the argument that the Euros are harder to win. Ultimately you have to beat more teams to win the World Cup, and that's not easier.
Oh i never meant to say winning the euros is harder, i dont think it is.
I think most quality teams are from the euros, but to win the wc you have to beat them + brazil & argentina
Which is always harder than having to beat euro quality teams + hungary & denmark or w/e
And of course now you'll have to survive one more round as well

Yeah and that's also not including when a team like Mexico or Uruguay have a strong team, the random African team that is good, and like Japan/South Korea. The auxiliary teams around the world are better than the Euro ones.
Of course, now with 48 teams, it's far easier to advance, which in the past, usually at least one really good team would not make it to the knockouts because of a tough group.
should've known that the first day off would devolve into the old world cup vs euros debate...
2024 euro quarter-finalists:
spain, germany, portugal, france, netherlands, turkey, england, switzerland
it's mostly always gonna be the same ~8-12 teams. the same ones that are mostly always gonna be there at the end of world cups
2024 euro r16 losers:
georgia, denmark, slovenia, belgium, romania, austria, slovakia, italy
i like the euros, but i prefer the world tournament that has conmebol + morocco, japan, mexico, usa, whichever african teams run best, etc in place of pointless eurotrash
do the euros have better teams on average? yeah, probably. is the world catching up? quite possibly, yes. is the world cup more fun and interesting? i would say yes. wouldn't i be surprised if europeans argued otherwise? no. is it great that both tournaments exist? imo yes.
World Cup > Euros. It's greater than all other football tournaments. idk how that is even a debate. Of course it's harder to win a World Cup.
I watched the Argentina vs Egypt game and I have to say I 100% fully agree with Egypt on their comments about the game it was absolute blatent they were robbed and Egypt should by all rights be through and Argentina out. This goes well beyond bad refereeing or simple mistakes. Human error is forgiveable humans are not perfect and we are all flawed, but this wasnt simply mistakes or errors this was outright delibrate match fixing with a clear Agenda from Fifa. I seriously believe now the world cup is already decided. I think it is literally impossible for anyone to win the world cup but Argentina now, honestly from what I have seen without the history of this existing and with fair unbiased officials I actually believe both England or Norway would likely have beaten Argentina in the semi finals.
However I think honestly neither have any chance what so ever of doing so now. even if there was legitimate unbiased officiating which i dont for a second believe there will be, Niether England or Norway would stand any chance at all against Argentina. I say this because even with completely unbiased officiating neither England nor Norway could believe or feel comfortable that there would be this would stop players making challenges and plays because of the risk of unfair cards. which puts them at a massive disadvantage.
Its a shame because whilst I like to joke about it I saw something different in England games truly I did. Every world cup and eurocup its always felt like England are heading out that they jsut lacked something and I never believed they could do it. England have not looked great this world cup the struggle against Ghana the almost going out against Congo but something was different this time. for the first time ever I saw real fight real determination actual fighting spirit of lions and for the first time ever I was actually seriously thinking omg they might actually do it this time.
I am hesitant to admit that because I usually like to troll a little bit and play the doubting thomas but honestly I was for the first time ever actually beggining to believe that we were going to do it.
I turly cannot believe anyone but Argentina will now because it appears totally and utterly fixed and the only way to fix this would be to eliminate Argentina and put Egypt back in who deserve to go through I am serious.
I cant really ever again take a world cup seriously now unless everyone pulls out of FIFA and starts a new body it is fundementally fixed and corrupt and it is a real shame to see that. I will be routing for anyone but Argentina now but honestly I cant see it this one is Argentinas because it was fixed and its to late to unfix it now.
Egypt led 2-0 for 78 minutes. Even including alleged FIFA ****ery, they had ample chance to take it home.
I dont massively get the outrage over the Argentina / Egypt game tbh. It was obviously a foul but yes it was a long way back (still in the same phase of play).
Feels like that is the only actual controversial decision and even then you can obviously see it.

Having seen the replays a hundred times, it's a bunch of nonsense.
They got all the major calls correct.
It sucks that a great counterattacking goal was chalked off, but it's a very clear foul that leads to Egypt scoring 20 seconds later, in a single attacking sequence.
The reason it wasn't called immediately is because they are taught to let all plays conclude first. It's the same reason offside isn't called anymore until the shot is made or the attacking team loses the ball. They are supposed to do it that way.
Egypt ended up scoring a legitimate goal a few minutes later anyway.
Giving up 3 goals in a space of 12 minutes is just incredibly poor defending. Has nothing to do with any perceived riggage.

The 3-2 seemed controversial all though I didn't check it again. I think there were a couple more non-calls that were questionable but nothing we haven't seen this world cup + I also don't think any of it matters.
No FIFA corruption can fix how awful Egypt was at defending. The whole game they looked like they were going to concede multiple goals.

Agreed. You have to beat the best Euro teams + the best teams from other continents. Not sure how that could end up resulting in the WC being softer than the Euros lol.

nah, that was full-blown ebolaids + cancer + [insert other things that simultaneously suck & blow]
Yes, but that was in the Flintstones era of the World Cup. I've actually done a decent amount of research on their WC wins.In 1930, Uruguay were chosen as inaugural hosts, after winning the previous two olympic tournaments for football. Those two tournaments allowed professional players, hence why FIFA considers them official world championships, and it's why Uruguay jerseys ha
Thanks for this. I love me some sports history, especially from before WWII.
yeah, ur mom, last night.
can you confirm that you’ve ever not been crying, ever?
I'm tempted to spew on Spain vs Belgium in LA. Should I?
It's like $1400 ish now.
egypt acting like this is the greatest injustice since thierry henry's 'well i didnt do it on purpose' is silly. it was minor riggage only. defend your two goal lead for 20 mins and you go through
I was rooting for Egypt; unfortunately, they have only themselves—and Messi—to blame. I have no complaints about the referee.
anyone know a site where I can get the following
Michael Olise
Theo Hernandez
Jules Koundé
Dayot Upamecano
William Saliba
a red card issues to France
and Morocco to be given a penalty I would like to bet on Morocco getting more then one penalty if possible to im not getting silly with amounts this will likely be a $2/$3 bet and even I think its a long shot but I think with the clear match fixing I believe is going on the odds will be more likely then what the bookies offering and I might get lucky.
just i cant find a site that offers all of this
