Is it still possible to get Diamond in a Day?
I have read about it in the past, just curious.
I generally think in terms of usefulness for myself, since I don't know what other people want. I hardly ever go to bars, and seldom drink booze. When I do drink, it's beer, which isn't that hard to buy for myself or get free while playing. I never get booze to have with food, except beer with pizza. I'm in the same boat. If you're an alcoholic (borderline or otherwise) and want to drink w/o gaming all the time, then this is great. But for most people it's not a very useful perk. When the vouchers extended to things like stores/starbucks I had a lot more use for them. And even with the crazy prices in vegas, I used nowhere near $100/day, even if I used some of them on most days during my trips.
It's not that I don't recognize being able to go to a bar/restaurants with friends and save upwards of $100 on alcoholic beverages isn't a good thing. But the bottom line is, how often am I really doing that? Maybe once a week at most? I was just in Vegas for nearly two months. I'd say I used less than $200 in the vouchers in that entire time. I also gave Caesars less than 50% of the play I used to, and it has nothing to do with economics. I spent much more at the WSOP this year than in any other year.
The problem Caesars ran into is they made it so much easier for lots of people to reach D+ status and this included a lot of locals who started to use the vouchers to essentially stock up on groceries. You could literally gamble only a few days a year during tier multiplier periods and then get all those free groceries. It got out of hand. But instead of doing the intelligent thing, like figuring out a way to continue to reward high-value customers while avoiding those who were just gaming the system, they decided to do the easy thing which was to severely restrict the benefit. They could have changed the policy so the perk only existed in combination with a hotel stay, or some minimum amount of hours of play. That would have solved the problem.
But common-sense solutions were entirely beyond the capabilities of the folks running Caesars. We'll see if anything is different under new ownership. Hope springs eternal, but it did so when El-Dorado took over too. So, I'm not holding my breath.

I never understood all those people who were using it to get water. First, water is free anyway. Second, even if you feel like you need bottles of water, a Diamond player can get as many of these as they want by just asking for them at Diamond registration.

Most of the time I spend in Vegas is in triple digit temps, i.e. the WSOP. Even at night it can be 95 at midnight. Horseshoe has such bad food options I have to get out of there every once in awhile, meaning go outside. I tend to sweat like a buffalo in the heat, so I valued the big Fiji waters I used to be able to get, and keep in the room fridge. As for getting water at registration, they were the little bottles, and I felt weird asking for more than 3. Plus, the offender locals were getting DP just by playing poker forever, and I felt like I "paid" for my status by losing thousands at video poker.
As far as restricting benefits, I could understand capping benefits for poker, since there's no traditional edge for the casino like every other game in the casino.
